1. Overview
3. Mode of operation

In the drill 16, the energy supplied by the compressed air 27 is converted into a rotary movement. The pneumatic drill is used mainly in the right-handed direction for drilling and positioning of drilling wires. For this purpose, the speed can be controlled up to 900 1/min. with the lower trigger 20. The direction of rotation can be changed, especially for thread cutting and removing bone screws. To do this, additionally press the upper trigger 19. With the left-handed motion now preselected, the speed can also be continuously controlled up to 900 1/min. with the trigger 20. The drill continues to run in the left-hand direction as long as the upper trigger 19 is pressed.
Note Please note that the proper use of the pneumatic drill can be ensured only with original Aesculap accessories.
2. Purpose The pneumatic drill is used for drilling, thread-cutting, screwing in and unscrewing screws and positioning spikes (drill wires) in bone surgery. The pneumatic drill has a power take-off shaft with a hollow bore so that the drilling wires can be briefly clamped and guided by the drill for safe work. The tool chuck (accessory) permits simple and rapid clamping of the particular tools. By choosing the necessary chuck, compatibility with the tool range is ensured. Note When the pneumatic drill is used for positioning drilling wires (Kirschner wires), the safety sleeve (GA 437 224) must be mounted in order to avoid injuries.

4. Putting into operation To put the pneumatic drill GA 437 16 into operation, you require the following components: • Compressed air supply • Compressed air hose • Drill • Fast-action chuck
4.1 Compressed air supply To operate the drill, you require a compressed air supply with a working pressure of at least 6 bar. A flow rate of about 300 I/min. must be guaranteed. ! Note that the working pressure must not exceed 8 bar. ! If the compressed air supply is provided by compressed air cylinders or nitrogen cylinders, it is necessary to use a compressed air reducer which enables the necessary working pressure to be set. For compressed air cylinders with standard connection (DIN 4664), we recommend compressed air reducer GA 099. Note Depending on the compressed air reducer used, corresponding compressed air hoses with a compatible connection must be employed. IMPORTANT If oxygen is used, there is a danger of explosion! ! Exclusively compressed air or nitrogen must be used for operating the drill.

4.2 Compressed air hose To ensure operation of the drill, you require a connecting hose 24 and possibly extension hoses 26. The connection system in the operating theatre is decisive with regard to the selection. For operation with waste air recycling, the AESCULAP-Dräger coupling is standard. GA 460
5. Preparation 5.1 Connection of the compressed air hoses to the drill Compressed air hoses GA 460 to GA 468 are connected directly to the drill. They have a fast-action block coupling. ! For coupling, pull the sleeve 25 back and push the coupling of the connecting hose onto the compressed air connection 21 of the drill. ! Then release the sleeve and press the drill and the coupling firmly together until the sleeve clearly snaps into place.

Compressed air hoses with AESCULAP standard nipples and additionally with a diffuser are also available. The diffuser causes the waste air to flow away without turbulence.

! For uncoupling, pull the sleeve 22 and then pull the coupling away from the compressed air connection of the drill. GA 461
4.3 Drill ! Before starting up the drill for the first time, ensure that the necessary accessories are available. In particular, ensure that the compressed air hoses have the suitable connections. ! Please carry out a function test as described under Section 6.

5.2 Extension hoses The hoses GA 460, GA 464 and GA 468 can be extended with the extension hose GA 194 or GA 195. Extension hose GA 087 should be used for extending the hoses GA 463 and GA 465. Note Long compressed air hose combinations prevent the required quantity of air from flowing through. This leads to power losses. Recommendation Please ensure that the compressed air hoses used are as short as possible. This will ensure optimal use of the drill.

5.3 Attaching the chuck to the drill
Coupling
! Before the chuck is changed, the drill must be secured to prevent unintentional use. To enable the drill to be used, tool chucks are required for the tools, such as drill bits, thread cutters, etc.
! Press the chuck 3, 6 or 9 to 12 onto the drive axle 15 until it engages. ! It may be necessary to turn the chuck slightly on the drive axle. ! Do not block the release sleeve 4 to couple the chuck.

For positioning drill wires (Kirschner), we recommend using the special fast-action chuck GB 417 R 12 or GB 419 R 14. Drilling wires of 0.7 mm to 2.5 mm can be rapidly and simply clamped using this fastaction chuck. When using long drill wires, the supplied drill wire safety sleeve 23 (GA 437 224) of the drill should be put in place to prevent injuries.

! To attach the Kirschner wire chuck GB 471 R 12 or GB 419 R 14, fit the Kirschner wire chuck on the drill and secure it with the clamp lever 13.

5.4 Connection of the tools to the tool chuck
! The chuck is removed by first pressing it gently against the drill and then removing it by pulling back the release sleeve 4.
Connection of tools with AESCULAP square/hexagonal shaft ! For coupling, push the tool 1 or 7 with the AESCULAP square/hexagonal shaft into the chuck 3 or 8. ! Turn the tool slightly so that the position of the square/hexagonal section is found and then press the tool as far as it will go. NOTE ! For coupling the square shaft the tool chuck GB 411 R must be fitted on the drive shaft of the drill! A tool can be chucked only if the chuck is fitted on the drill.
Coupling ! For uncoupling, pull the tool release sleeve 2 towards the drill 16, hold it in this position an remove the tool 1 or 7.

! To remove the Kirschner wire chuck 12 or 14, open the clamp lever 13 and pull the Kirschner wire chuck off the drill.

Connection of tools with AO shaft ! For coupling, pull the tool release sleeve 2 towards the drill 16, hold it in this position and insert the tool 5 with AO shaft. ! Turn the tool 5 into the corresponding position of the flat section and push it as far as it will go. ! Now let go the tool release sleeve 2, which must snap into place clearly. ! If the tool release sleeve 2 does not snap, pull the tool 5 gently until the tool release sleeve 2 engages.
! For uncoupling, pull the tool release sleeve 2 towards the drill 16, hold it in this position and remove the tool 5.

6. Operation
8. Preparation, sterilization
! The drill 16 is switched on by means of the speed control 20. ! The speed is continuously controlled to 900 1/min by pressing the lower trigger 20. It automatically operates in the right-handed direction. ! For the special function of left-handed operation, the upper trigger 19 must additionally be pressed.
8.1 Manual preparation

6.1 Locking COMFORT drill GA 437 is additionally equipped with a safety mechanism guard against unintentional use. ! By turning the lower trigger 20 45° in the counterclockwise direction, the drill is locked and therefore cannot be unintentionally operated.
The drill may be cleaned and disinfected with any nationally approved commercial detergent and disinfectant suitable for cleaning anodized aluminium surfaces. ! Comply with manufacturer’s instructions for dilution ratios, time of reaction, etc. ! Clean drill with a cloth moistened in disinfectant or a soft brush. Never immerse the drill in fluid. Immersion in fluid will damage the handpiece. ! Ensure that any penetrated fluid is drained immediately. NOTE ! Sterilize drill with steam only! ! Sterilize the drill, the safety sleeve and the adapter separately in a steam sterilizer at 2 bar / 134 °C for a minimum of 4 minutes or at 3 bar / 143 °C for a minimum of 2 minutes. ! It is recommended to lay the parts out on or to roll them into a cloth.
8.2 Mechanical preparation The drill, the safety sleeve and the adapter may be cleaned by machine by using supports GB 461 R, GB 462 R and GB 464 R, suitable cleaning and thermal disinfecting programs. ! Use a cleaning and disinfecting program for cleaning with an inert cleaning agent. Ensure that fully de-mineralised water is used for the final rinse, accompanied by thermal disinfection. Clean process at ≤ 50 °C, use Vario-TD by Miele or a similar agent.

7. Function test ! Each time before use, the drill 20 with the mounted tool chuck must be subjected to a test run. ! Run the drill 16 in the right-handed direction and briefly in the left-handed direction. ! During the test run, ensure that the tool adapter 3, 6, 8, 9 to 12 or 14 and the tool 1, 5 , 7 or another tool is correctly mounted on the drill.

NOTE ! Sterilize drill with steam only! ! For sterilization the drill, the safety sleeve and the adapter may be left in their supports. ! Sterilize in steam sterilizer at 2 bar / 134 °C for a minimum of 4 min. or at 3 bar / 143 °C for a minimum of 2 min.

9. Maintenance Oiling of the drill 16 is not necessary but may be carried out. With two or three applications per day, all moving parts of the tool chuck 3, 6 , 8 , 9 to 12 or 14 and the plunger of the triggers 19 and 20 and the drive shaft 15 and the rear motor shaft 17 must be oiled weekly with a drop of lubricating oil GA 059. This maintenance should be carried out after 10 to 15 applications at the latest. The gear of the drill 12 should be relubricated every two to three years. This maintenance work must be performed only by the manufacturer.

11. Repair
14. Warnings
Aesculap will consider itself responsible for the safety, reliability and performance of the drill only if • the drill is used in conformity with the instructions for use, • assembly, extensions, readjustments, modifications or repairs are performed by Aesculap or by a specialist expressly authorised by Aesculap. Only original spare parts from Aesculap must be used for repairs. The operator is required to request a report on the type and scope of the work performed, with company stamp, date and signature, from the person performing the repair.
IMPORTANT ! Never use oxygen for operating the drill because there is a danger of explosion! IMPORTANT ! When using long drilling wires, the drilling wire safety sleeve (GA 437 224) of the drill should be used to prevent injuries!
