Foreword Thank you for purchasing ArjoHuntleigh equipment. Your Calypso lift and hygiene chair is part of a series of quality products designed especially for hospitals, nursing homes and other health care use. We are dedicated to serving your needs and providing the best products available along with training that will bring your staff maximum benefit from every ArjoHuntleigh product. Please read this manual in its entirety before using your Calypso lift and hygiene chair. Information in the manual is crucial to the proper operation and maintenance of the equipment, and will help protect your product and ensure that equipment performs to your satisfaction. Some of the information in this manual is important for your safety and must be read and understood to help prevent possible injury. ArjoHuntleigh strongly advise and warn that only ArjoHuntleigh designed parts, which are designed for the purpose, should be used on equipment and other appliances supplied by ArjoHuntleigh, to avoid injuries attributable to the use of inadequate parts. Unauthorized modifications on any ArjoHuntleigh equipment may affect its safety. ArjoHuntleigh will not be held responsible for any accidents, incidents or lack of performance that occur as a result of any unauthorized modification to its products. Service and Support A service routine must be performed on your Calypso every year by ArjoHuntleigh authorized service personnel to ensure the safety and daily operation of your product. Safety Instructions The equipment must be used in accordance with these safety instructions. Anyone using the equipment must also have read and understood the instructions in this manual. If there is anything you are not sure about, contact your ArjoHuntleigh representative.

WARNING Never leave the resident unattended at any time. Ensure that the resident does not pull or hold on to stable objects such as grab rails, sinks and other equipment at any time.

Intended use This equipment is intended for lifting and transporting residents to and from a bathroom in a care facility and to assist with the bathing process. Calypso must be used by appropriately trained caregivers with adequate knowledge of the care environment, its common practices and procedures, and in accordance with the guidelines in the Instructions for Use.

WARNING Make sure Calypso is completely clear of all other surrounding devices, baths and furniture when the resident and/or the lift are being raised or lowered. Make sure Calypso is at least 30 cm (1 foot) away from the bath tub.

Resident assessment We recommend that facilities establish regular assessment routines. Caregivers should assess each resident according to the following criteria prior to use: •

The resident’s weight should not exceed 136kg / 300 lbs. • The resident should be active or semi-active (i.e. able to sit upright self supported on the side of a bed or toilet). • The resident should understand and respond to instructions to stay seated in an upright position. If a resident does not meet these criteria an alternative lift must be used.

WARNING The safety belt must be used at all times to make sure the resident remains in an upright position in the middle of the seat. The safety belt must be attached to the seat of Calypso on the same side as the back rest and securely buckled.

The expected life time of this equipment, unless otherwise stated, is ten (10) years, subject to preventative maintenance being carried out in accordance with the instructions for care and maintenance found in this manual.

WARNING Before lifting Calypso out of the water after a bath, re-position the resident if needed to ensure that the resident is sitting upright in the centre of the chair!

NOTE Modifications made to the equipment without expressed written consent of ArjoHuntleigh will invalidate the supplier's product liability.

NOTE All materials used in Calypso lift and hygiene chair complies with established biocompability standards and have been tested accordingly (ISO 10993-5). The body supported material in the seat and back rest is PUR (polyurethane)

Warnings To avoid the possibility of injury always ensure that: • •

• •

the equipment is used by appropriate trained staff. Calypso is moved with care, especially in narrow passages, over bumps etc. and that the resident safety straps are secured. the chair is kept at a low level during transportation to achieve better stability. Calypso is lowered to the lowest possible height immediately after removing the resident.

When the scale (accessory) is mounted on Calypso: •

the castors and brakes work freely. the castors are locked on Calypso during resident transfer from/to bed etc. and when Calypso is stationary. bed castors are locked during resident transfer from/to bed. the safety straps are in good condition and properly fastened. all screws are tightened. the hydraulic system is working smoothly (raising and lowering). there are no sharp edges or parts coming in contact with residents. drain covered areas need to be smooth and levelled with the floor in order to move the lift safely. the slope of the floor does not exceed the ratio 1:50.

there could be a risk of getting jammed between the scale base and the swivelling castors. Keep this area free.

Battery charger safety practices: •

When positioning Calypso, do not stand in the direction of the movement of the hand rest. An unexpected movement of the arms upwards by the resident can injure the caregiver.

the Calypso is always moved in the right direction.The lift has a lower stability and can tilt when moved in the wrong driving direction. Always move the lift in the right direction.

The charger is designed for dry areas only and for normal air humidity conditions. Don’t expose the charger to water or dust. Do not cover the charger.

Calypso should be moved in the correct direction:

Use only the charger supplied with the equipment. Do not charge batteries in a sealed container. Be careful not to drop the battery. Do not place batteries near a heat source or fire. Do not short-circuit the battery. Do not store batteries at a temperature higher than 50 °C (122 °F). Do not crush, puncture, open, dismantle or otherwise mechanically interfere with the batteries. Should the battery casing crack and inside content come in contact with skin or clothing, rinse immediately with water. If content comes in contact with the eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical attention. Inhalation of the content can cause respiratory irritation. Sensitivity of nickel can cause allergic asthma. Provide fresh air and medical attention. Contact the appropriate local authority for advice when disposing of batteries. Check labels on the battery.Don’t expose the batteries or chargers to flames. Don’t expose the battery connector to water Don’t use the charger in the presence of inflammable anaesthetic gases.

Preparations Actions before the first use

Visually check the package for damage. If the product is suspected to be damaged make a complaint to the delivery agency and contact the Calypso product sales office.

The packaging should be recycled according to local regulations.

Check that all parts of the product are supplied. Compare with the product description in this manual. If any part is missing or damaged - do not use the product!

Mounting of the enclosed spacer: The spacer that is mounted on Calypso when delivered, is adapted to the depth of ArjoHuntleigh Bath Systems. For deeper baths only: To get a deeper immersion, remove one of the two mounted spacers on Calypso Be careful not to damage the surface of the tub.

Unpack the battery charger. See “installation and charging batteries”.

Charge each battery for 24 hrs.

Clean the product according to ”cleaning instructions”.

Find a dry area, dry with good ventilation for storing the lift.

Choose a designated area, where the operating manual should be kept, accessible at all times for the user.s

Product description/function Manual raising and lowering (1) • •

Calypso is raised by using the hand pump. Pump evenly, using the full range of movement. Calypso is lowered by pressing the lowering button.

Electric raising and lowering (2) Unhook the hand control from its holder. • •

To raise Calypso, press the “up” arrow button on the hand control. To lower Calypso press the “down” arrow button.

Safety belt (3) The safety belt should be used all the time when the resident is being moved. a

Attach the belt to the transport handle.

Place it in front of the resident and fasten it to the knob.

WARNING There is a risk of getting squeezed when raising/lowering the handle bars. Keep this area free during adjustments.

Back rest (1) • •

The hand rest/back rest can be pushed backwards. Only CDB60XX model. The back rest can be used on either side depending on which side the resident will be transferred from. It is detached by pushing at the rim straight out. Put it on the actual side and snap it in place.

Seat (2) Only CDB60XX model. • a

The seat insert can be taken out by grabbing it the middle and pulling it straight up. The seat is in two parts. The front is pulled out by grabbing the frame underneath and at the same time pressing upwards with the wrists until it comes loose. The back is pulled out by grabbing the frame on top and pressing upwards with the wrists until it comes loose.

The seat cushion (3) •

The seat cushion is only to be used together with the seat insert. First attach one of the strips to the front of the seat. Stretch the seat cushion and attach the other strip to the back of the seat.

WARNING The centre seat insert must be used together with the seat cushion. Failure to follow these instructions may result in injury of the resident. NOTE Only CDB 70XX. The body supported material in the seat and back rest is PUR (polyurethane)

Castor brakes (4) • •

The brakes on the castors will be activated by pressing the castor lock tab (A) with your foot. The brakes are released from the castors by pressing down the centre tab (B).

Emergency Stop (1) If, for any reason, Calypso does not respond to the control buttons, you can quickly stop lift movement by pressing the button on the battery and disconnect it (1). Contact your local ArjoHuntleigh representative before reusing Calypso.

Emergency High/Low (2-3) If, for any reason, Calypso does not respond to the control buttons, raise or lower Calypso by using the Emergency High/Low a

Unplug the hand control (2).

Control Calypso by pressing a blunt, thin object into the holes at the panel. (i.e. a pen) (3).

•

Press it into the hole next to the “up arrow” in order to raise Calypso. Press it into the hole next to the ”down arrow” in order to lower Calypso.

•

NOTE A continuous beeping sound is heard during the “up” and “down” action movement.

Contact your local ArjoHuntleigh representative before re-using Calypso.

CAUTION Do not use a sharp tipped object to press into the holes.

Bedpan and bedpan holder (3-4) (optional) A bedpan holder can be mounted under the seat. Assemble according to the illustrations:

WARNING Make sure that male resident genitals do not get pinched between bedpan and chair.

Leg straps (5)(optional) •

The leg straps should be attached with Velcro tape and are fastened through and around the middle of the seat and the resident’s legs.

Transferring the resident From bed 1

Lower the bed rail and turn the resident on his/her side. Pull back the hand rest and back rest and place the seat in over the bed as close to the resident as possible. Adjust the seat so that the resident will be sitting on the back part of the seat. Lower the seat so that it is pressed against the bed (1).

Apply brakes on the both castors (2).

Turn the resident on his back and make sure he is lying in the correct position on the chair (3). Help the resident to sit up. Manually or if possible, raise the back part of the bed (3).

Position the back rest behind the resident. (4) Put the hand rest in place in front of the resident (4). Fasten the chest strap. Attach the leg straps if necessary (4).

Release the castor brakes and pull Calypso out from the bed while helping the resident with his legs (5).

Lower Calypso to a comfortable height so the resident can put his/her feet on the foot rest. Always use the transport handles during transport. The resident should keep his/her hands on the hand rest (6).

After transferring the resident, always ensure he /she is in a correct sitting position.

WARNING To avoid risk of injury, ensure the resident keeps their hands on the hand rest when raising and lowering Calypso, as well as during transport.

WARNING Always pay close attention to the resident during transferring, transport and bathing. To bed To transfer the resident back to bed, perform “From bed” instructions above, in reverse order.

From a wheelchair For the resident to be able to move from a wheelchair (1), the individual must be strong enough to move them self sideways and/or be able to stand up. a

Brake the castors of the wheelchair. Remove the armrest and push the foot rest upwards. Put Calypso right beside the wheelchair.

Lower the seat to the same level as the seat of the chair, so that the seat of Calypso is next to or slightly overlapping the seat of the wheelchair, depending on its construction.

Brake the castors of Calypso.

The resident can now move from the wheelchair by himself.

Fasten the chest strap and the leg straps. Make sure the resident has his/her feet on the foot rest and his/her hands on the hand rest.

Always hold the transport handles during transport. The resident should keep his hands on the hand rest (2).

To a wheelchair For the resident to be able to move to a wheelchair, the individual must be strong enough to move himself /herself sideways and/or be able to stand up. •

Lower Calypso so that the seat is higher than the wheelchair seat. Perform the “from wheelchair” instructions listed above in reverse order when transferring the resident back to wheelchair.

WARNING Make sure that the brakes are applied both on Calypso and the wheelchair during the transferring. To a toilet Calypso can be used regardless of whether the toilet is attached to the floor or to the wall. 1

Remove the seat cushion and then the seat insert (3) before the resident is transferred to Calypso. Only CDB6000 model.

Place Calypso right over the toilet seat. Lower the calypso seat and apply the brakes.

An useful accessories is the bedpan with holder, in the case of transporting incontinent residents.

Bathing the resident First read the separate instructions for your bathing equipment.

NOTE Read safety instructions on page 5-6 before bathing.

WARNING To avoid risk of injury, ensure the resident keeps his/her hands on the hand rest when raising and lowering Calypso, as well as during transport. 1

Place Calypso in right angle close to the legs of the bath tub. Raise Calypso to clear the edge of the bath and move the resident in over the bath. Help the resident move his feet over the edge.

Brake the castors.

Raise the bath tub to a comfortable height, if it is adjustable.

Lower Calypso seat so that it rests against the bottom of the bath tub.

WARNING Make sure the resident's legs are stretched out in front of them and not trapped under the chair seat! 5

Remove the chest strap.

Pull the arm rest forward/up and lay the resident down with the back rest slightly back.

Bathe the resident.

After bathing, let the bath water out and push the hand rest forward/down and sit the resident up. Push the back rest forward/down and fasten the chest safety strap and optional legstraps. Lower the bathtub, so that Calypso is above the water and give the resident a shower.

After drying, release the castors and return the resident to his room.

WARNING Always remove residents from the bath by completely lowering the tub and raising Calypso only to the extent necessary to clear the tub. Make sure Calypso is at least 30cm (1 foot) away from the bath tub or other objects. Always lower Calypso promptly after removing the resident from the bath. Make sure that the resident does not pull or hold on to stable objects at any time, especially while Calypso is being moved or the brakes are applied.

WARNING Before lifting Calypso out of the water after a bath, re-position the resident if needed to ensure that the resident is sitting upright in the centre of the chair.

WARNING Never leave the resident unattended at any time, particularly when Calypso is in a raised position.

Showering the resident First read the separate instructions for your Prelude Shower cabinet. 1

Remove the cabinets splash guard.

Position Calypso in front of the cabinet with resident’s back towards the cabinets front.

Raise Calypso and push it carefully as far as possible into the shower cabinet.

WARNING Always check that the seat of the chair is raised high enough for the residents legs to clear the threshold of the cabinet safely! 4

Brake the castors and lower the resident to a comfortable working height then fold away the handrest.

Loosen the safety strap and undress the resident then fasten the safety strap again.

Put in the splash guard.

Set the controls, then shower and shampoo the resident from his head downwards.

WARNING Always test the temperature of the water by bare hand before giving the resident a shower. Do not use gloves while checking the water temperature with your hand, gloves isolate and can lead to a temperature misjudgement.

Adjust the height of the chair for easy access during showering.

Place a towel around the resident’s shoulders after having washed and rinsed the upper body.

After drying, unlock the castors and return the resident to his/her room.

WARNING Re-position the resident if needed to ensure that the resident is sitting upright in the centre of the chair.

WARNING Never leave the resident unattended at any time, particularly when Calypso is in a raised position.

WARNING The safety belt must always be used to make sure the resident remains in an upright position in the middle of the seat. The safety belt must be attached to the seat of Calypso on the same side as the back rest and securely buckled.

WARNING Make sure Calypso is completely clear from all surrounding devices, baths and furniture when being raised or lowered. Make sure Calypso is at least 30 cm (1 foot) away from the cabinet or other device if the tub is being raised for any reason such as quicker drainage! Make sure that the resident does not pull or hold on to stable objects at any time, especially while Calypso is being moved or the brakes are applied.
