Quick Reference Guide for Using the BariMaxx™ II Power Drive System (PDS) See reverse side for full bed diagram and location of all features.
PREPARING TO MOVE Configure the bed as needed for move (raise side rails and push in bed extensions if used). Follow all institutional protocols for patient support equipment during patient transport.
DRIVING INSTRUCTIONS Select driving direction by using the DIRECTION SPEED INDICATOR SWITCHES on the inside of the RIGHT CONTROL POST. (Press left once for slow forward, left twice for fast forward, right once for reverse.)
ELEVATOR ENTRY / EXIT When going in and out of an elevator, make sure to lock the steering casters in the neutral position by pulling up on the two PURPLE TABS.
Unplug the bed from the wall socket and wrap cord onto the power cord storage holder at the bottom of the bed. To move the bed, press and hold the RUN SWITCH on the back of the LEFT CONTROL POST...
Turn on the PDS by disengaging the LOCKOUT SWITCH. Press the red POWER SWITCH, located on the inside of the LEFT CONTROL POST to the ON position. The POWER ON INDICATOR LIGHT, located on the RIGHT CONTROL POST, will change to green. The PDS is now on.
...then gently depress the ACCELERATOR SWITCH on the RIGHT CONTROL POST to begin moving. NOTE: Both switches must be engaged for bed to move.
To brake, release either the RUN SWITCH or the ACCELERATOR SWITCH. Lower the bed using the BED UP / DOWN SWITCH on the LEFT CONTROL POST until downward movement stops. The power drive wheel, also referred to as the fifth wheel, will make contact with the floor. NOTE: Remember to raise the bed again before attempting to weigh the patient. If the power drive wheel is still engaged, weight readings will not be accurate. Unlock the casters by stepping down on the GREEN DOT. This releases the brakes. To manually move the bed, raise the bed until it stops. This releases the power drive wheel. Unlock all four casters by stepping down on the GREEN DOTS. Ensure that the PURPLE STEERING TABS are in the neutral position by pulling up. This allows the casters to spin freely.
SLEEP MODE
The PDS will fall into sleep mode after five minutes of idle time when unplugged. To turn the PDS back on, press the RUN SWITCH.
BATTERY CHARGE The BATTERY GAUGE is located on the inside of the RIGHT CONTROL POST.
To steer while moving the bed, release both the RUN SWITCH and ACCELERATOR SWITCH and turn the bed.
Full charge: normal usage is approximately two hours
ONCE MOVE IS COMPLETE Lock the casters by stepping down on the red dot.
Half charge: recommend plugging in as soon as possible
Raise the bed to release the power drive wheel and provide for patient weight functions. Turn off PDS by pressing the red power switch to the OFF position, then engaging the LOCK-OUT SWITCH. Plug bed power cord into wall socket. Configure bed and patient support equipment as required, following all institutional protocols.
Partial charge: 30% battery remaining, plug in immediately

Batteries - CAUTION: Despite BariMaxx™ II Power Drive System’s use of an advanced charging circuit, batteries always present risk of emitting gasses that may cause temporary irritation to eyes, throat or other mucous membranes, especially if the batteries are more than 28 months old or if charging circuit protections are circumvented.
CAUTION: To minimize the risk of serious injury, carefully read and follow all safety information and operating instructions before operating the BariMaxx™ II Power Drive System. Ensure all physician orders and facility protocols are followed.
Batteries - IMPORTANT: If the bed and PDS will be out of service for an extended time or in storage, it must remain plugged in to prevent self-discharge of batteries.
Steep Slopes: When operating PDS on slopes, always use slow speed. Do not operate on slopes in excess of ADA recommended guidelines (generally >7˚ slope).
SPECIFICATIONS
Wet Surfaces: Do not operate PDS on wet surfaces.
