1. Introduction The Flowtron Plus system consists of a pneumatic pump system that is light and simple to use. It is suitable for home use. The pump supplies air via connecting tubes to an inflatable garment allowing the application of controlled pressure to gently compress the limb. This action assists in increasing the return of blood, excess fluids, improves venous stasis and encourages the reabsorption of waste products. The pump operates on an automatically timed cycle of 3 minutes, 90 s compression followed by 90 s decompression. Variable pressure output ranges from 30 - 90 mmHg. The garments are inflated alternately. The Flowtron® yellow garments provide single chamber garment uniform compression, while the Flowplus® blue garments offer three chamber graduated segmented compression. We would recommend that this manual is read thoroughly before proceeding with treatment. Please also refer to clinical guidelines and contraindications.

2. Clinical Application Intermittent Compression Therapy A thorough assessment of the patient should be made considering the general state of the patient and the specific characteristics of their presenting condition. The choice of system, i.e. garment and treatment regime, is to be recommended by the medical practitioner for the patient. Training and education of the patient in the use and understanding of the system will help to ensure compliance. Indications
Flowtron Plus is effective in the healing and treatment of the following clinical conditions: l l l
l l l l
Venous ulcers; Chronic venous insufficiency; Oedema - dependent - traumatic - secondary to stroke; Wound healing; Fixed flexion deformity; Arthritic conditions; Lymphoedema - primary - secondary;
2
Contraindications
Flowtron systems should NOT be used in the following conditions:l l
Known or suspected deep vein thrombosis, thrombophlebitis or pulmonary embolism. Severe congestive cardiac failure.
If you are unsure if you have any of the contraindications refer to your medical practitioner before using the device.
Flowtron systems should be used with CAUTION on patients with: l l l
Severe ischaemic vascular disease. Wounds, fragile skin or localised conditions in which garments would interfere. Peripheral neuropathy
3
3. Clinical Treatment Guide An initial pressure setting of 40 mmHg is suggested at the commencement of treatment. It may be necessary to start at a lower level of pressure dependant on the patient’s tolerance. The pressure can be gradually increased over time, until the required pressure is reached. The upper treatment pressure range is generally 60-70 mmHg. A single treatment session is usually 20-30 minutes.
+
The above settings and timings are guidelines, and should not be used as a substitute for clinical judgement and experience.

4. Setting Up and Operations Applying the Garments
1. Check the type - Flowtron single chamber or Flowplus three chamber and the length of the garment required. 2. Measure the circumference of the largest part of the limb, and the length in cm/inch from the heel to the upper thigh for a full leg garment, heel to knee for half leg garment (see Fig. 1 and 2). W

If a larger circumference is required, fit a matching length insert piece before applying to the limb. (See Fig. 3 and 4). If appropriate, a primary dressing or stockinette may be used underneath the garments.

4.
Place the limb into the garment and zip up carefully, ensuring that the patient is in a comfortable position with the limb supported or elevated as necessary.
5.
Ensure that the zip is fully secured at the top edge. (See Fig. 5 and 6).

Caution Never apply or remove any garments while inflated as this could cause damage or punctures to the garments. Operation
The pump may be used either hanging from a bed/armchair or placed securely on a flat surface. Before starting the pump ensure that: the garments are properly applied and the zips are secured. The garment connecting tubes are attached firmly to the pump outlet ports. If only one garment is being used, cover the other outlet with the plug (7). Ensure that the pressure level is set at minimum, i.e. The knob (3) is fully rotated in an anticlockwise direction. Press the ON/OFF switch (1) both red and green lights should illuminate. The red light (2) should normally stop flashing after a few inflations.
Switch On
+
Check the garment and pump connections if it does not stop flashing.
To Set the Garment Pressure
+ To Remove the Garment
While the garment is inflating, rotate the pressure control knob (3) slowly clockwise until the required pressure is displayed on the gauge (6). Check and adjust as necessary after 3 inflation cycles.
It might be necessary to start at a lower pressure level dependant on the patients tolerance. Compression should not cause any discomfort or pain to the patient. Switch off the pump (1) waiting until the garment has deflated or if a quick deflation is necessary, disconnect the tubes from the pump. Only open the zips after the garments are completely deflated.
9
5. Cleaning, Care, Maintenance, and Service Garment Cleaning
40
Handwash in detergent and warm water, keeping the tube out of the water. Blot or air dry. Do not iron. Do not use phenol Do not tumble dry
Multiple Patient Use of Garment
Wash as above and then arrange for suitable sterilisation according to your hospital’s procedure.
Pump
WARNING Switch off the electrical supply to the pump and disconnect the power cord from the mains supply before cleaning and inspection. Cleaning
The pump casing is manufactured from plastic and should be cleaned using a damp soft cloth dampened with a mild detergent. This can be followed by a sodium hypochlorite solution to a dilution of 1000 ppm. Do not use abrasive compounds or pads.
General Care, Maintenance and Inspection
Check all electrical connections and power cord for signs of excessive wear.
Maintenance
The equipment has been designed to be virtually maintenance-free between service periods. It is recommended that the pump is serviced annually by a Huntleigh Healthcare authorised service agent.
Servicing
Huntleigh Healthcare will make available on request service manuals, component parts lists, and other information necessary for Huntleigh Healthcare trained personnel to repair the system.
In the event of the pump being subjected to abnormal treatment, e.g. immersed in water or dropped, the unit must be returned to an authorised service depot.
10
6. Troubleshooting If you should encounter a problem, please follow the fault finding guide below. If the fault cannot be rectified, please refer to Service. Fault
Check
Remedy
Pump dead no ‘ON’ light.
Is power switch on? Is power cord plugged in correctly?
Check switch. Check connections.
Pump operates but garment will not inflate.
Blockage in garment supply tube.
Ensure that the tube airway is clear.
Low pressure warning illuminates.
Single garment in use and plug not on other outlet. Garment not correctly fitted to pump. Pressure control set too low. Air leak in garment.
Fix plug to unused outlet.
None of the above.
Service Returns
Check connections. Increase pressure control. Check garment. Replace if defective. Hint - Reduced pressure level indicates garment or connector leak. Call service.
If for any reason your Flowtron Plus is being returned, please: 1. Clean the product following the instructions in section 5. 2. Enclose a covering letter explaining the reasons for the return, with documentation (including an appropriate decontamination certificate if possible). 3. To prevent damage in transport please pack the pump in a suitably robust box.
