Your Carendo shower and toilet chair is part of a series of quality products designed especially for hospitals, nursing homes and other health care use. Please contact us if you have any questions about the operation or maintenance of your ARJO equipment. Please read this manual thoroughly! Please read this manual in its entirety before using your Carendo shower and toilet chair. Information in the manual is crucial to the proper operation and maintenance of the equipment, and will help protect your product and ensure that equipment performs to your satisfaction. Some of the information in this manual is important for your safety and must be read and understood to help prevent possible injury. ARJO strongly advise and warn that only ARJO designed parts, which are designed for the purpose, should be used on equipment and other appliances supplied by ARJO, to avoid injuries attributable to the use of inadequate parts.

The equipment must be used in accordance with these safety instructions. Anyone using the equipment must also have read and understood the instructions in this manual. If there is anything you are not sure about, contact your ARJO representative.
Intended use This equipment is intended for hygiene care, showering and toileting of residents in hospital, nursing home or other similar environment. Carendo must be used by appropriately trained caregivers with adequate knowledge of the care environment, its common practices and procedures, and in accordance with the guidelines in the Operating and Product Care instructions (this document). Resident assessment We recommend that facilities establish regular assessment routines. Caregivers should assess each resident according to the following criteria prior to use: • •
The resident’s weight should not exceed 136kg / 300 lbs. The resident should be active or semi-active (i.e. able to sit upright, self-supported on the side of a bed or toilet). • The resident should understand and respond to instructions to stay seated in an upright position. If a resident does not meet these criteria an alternative lift shall be used. Battery charger This charger is intended for charging ARJO battery NEA 0100 only, in accordance with the instructions outlined in the Operating and Product Care instructions. The equipment must only be used for the purposes stated above. The useful life of this equipment, unless otherwise stated, is ten (10) years, subject to preventative maintenance being carried out in accordance with the instructions for care and maintenance found in this manual.
NOTE Modifications made to the equipment without expressed written consent of ARJO will invalidate the supplier's product liability.
NOTE All materials used in this product complies with established biocompatibility standards and have been tested accordingly (ISO 10993).

To avoid the possibility of injury always ensure that: • • • • • • •

the equipment is used by appropriate trained staff. Carendo is moved with care, especially in narrow passages and over uneven surfaces. Carendo is lowered to its ergonomically correct height during transportation. the resident’s arms are crossed over the chest during transportation. the resident’s feet are clear off the floor during transportation. the resident’s legs don’t move away from the leg support. nobody is touching parts of the lift which are in relative movement to each other when the lift is activated. the direction of driving during transportation is according to the illustration below.

when moving a resident to or from Carendo the brake is activated. the brake always is activated when Carendo is not in use.
The charger is designed for dry areas only and for normal air humidity conditions. Don’t expose the charger to water or dust. The charger must not be covered.

Use only the charger supplied with the equipment. Do not charge batteries in a sealed container. Be careful not to drop the battery. Do not place batteries near a heat source or fire. Do not short-circuit the battery. Do not store batteries at a temperature higher than 50 °C (122 °F). Do not crush, puncture, open, dismantle or otherwise mechanically interfere with the batteries. Should the battery casing crack and cause contents to come in contact with skin or clothing, rinse immediately with water. If contents come in contact with the eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical attention. Inhalation of the contents can cause respiratory irritation. Sensitivity of nickel can cause allergic asthma. Provide fresh air and medical attention. Contact the appropriate local authority for advice when disposing of batteries. Check labels on the battery.
WARNING Don’t expose the batteries or chargers to flames. Don’t expose the battery connector to water. Don’t use the charger in presence of inflammable anesthetic gases.
WARNING Do not overload the Carendo! It has a lifting capacity of 136 kg (300 lb.)
NOTE Do not lift the Carendo using the armrests; use the chassis. Only one function movement (e.g reclined function) can be done at a time. Pushing on more than one button at a time will stop all movements.

Reclined function A function which makes hygienic care of the resident easier (1). From a sitting position, a reclined position can be achieved by means of turning gears which makes the backrest move in backwards and upright directions. Corresponding to this movement the legrest is moving up and down.
Lifting function, high/low The resident can, in a sitting position, be transported and the chair can be adjusted to a suitable height over the toilet (2). The lifting/lowering movement is performed by a linear actuator driven by an electric motor.
Care Raiser A function which makes undressing and changing of incontinence pads of the resident easier (3). From a sitting position, a raising of the posterior parts of the resident and at the same time a backwards movement of the backrest (4) is activated. This movements are synchronized to each other.
Leg support Supports the resident’s legs, and also prevents the legs from getting jammed under the seat. Moves forward when the chair is adjusted to the reclined position.
Driving handles Driving handles (5)on the backrest get correct driving position for the caregiver.
Maneuver handles The maneuvering handles on the backrest (6) help the caregiver to get the chair in the correct position over the toilet and in the shower.
Wheels Carendo is equipped with lockable wheels (7).
Security strap The strap will secure the resident in the chair. Fasten at the knobs on either side of the backrest and adjust length by means of the holes (see illustration 8 for correct fastening position). Secure the resident with the strap if needed.

Handset
Battery
Connect the contact of the handset on the right side of the backrest (1a). Normally, the handset should not be disconnected from the chair. If a disconnection is needed when a new unit should be mounted, loosen very carefully by means of the snap-in socket. The handset has a hook on the back, making it easy to attach it to various parts of the chair (1b).
The battery is placed at the left side of the chair (6).

Green LED, flashing when the Care Raiser is possible to activate (2A).

Reclined and sitting position (2C).

Arrow pointing upwards/downwards for raising or lowering (2D).
NOTE A buzzing tone will be heard and the green LED is flashing when sitting position is reached.
NOTE Care raising can only be activated when the green LED is flashing.
NOTE See to that the rounded ridge of the battery is turned upwards.
The battery holder should be attached to a suitable wall and the charger connected to a properly grounded wall socket (7).
NOTE The battery charger is designed for use in a dry location and should not be installed in bathrooms, etc. See separate instruction on page 23. Back pillow (accessory) An additional pillow to support the back. An integrated easyglide function when the chair is adjusted to reclined position. Easy to adjust according to the length of the resident (3-4). See separate instructions accompanying the product.
Seat cushion (accessory) A pillow that gives a more comfortable seat (5). See separate instructions accompanying the product.

Emergency lowering In case of electrical malfunction, the chair can be lowered by pushing the green button (1).
NOTE This function should only be used in emergency.
Emergency stop In any case of emergency, all functions can be stopped by pushing the red button (2a). To reset this function, turn the red button clockwise (2b).
Storage net A net on the backside of the backrest where shampoo, soap, incontinence pads etc. can be kept (3).
Bedpan and bedpan holder A bedpan holder can be mounted under the seat (4a). Assemble according to the illustration: 1
Remove the screws from the two holes in each side of the seat.

Fasten the holders with the enclosed screws.

Put the bedpan in place to be guided on the holders (4b).
WARNING Make sure that genitals of the resident don’t get jammed between bedpan and chair.

Independent residents From a standing position or using a walking frame: 1 Place the Carendo and adjust the height so that the edge of the seat touches the back of the resident's knees. 2
Activate the brake.

Let the resident hold on the armrest so that he/she can lean on it.

Help the resident to sit down.

Raise the Carendo to a height which is convenient for moving the resident
From a wheelchair: For the resident to be able to move from a wheelchair without lifting aids, the individual must be strong enough to move himself/herself sideways and/or be able to stand up. 1
Apply the wheel brakes on the wheelchair.

Lower the Carendo so that its seat is at the same level as the wheelchair seat, or as close as possible.

Apply the brakes on the Carendo.
The resident can now move himself/herself from the wheelchair to the Carendo by placing his/her hands on the handrest of the Carendo. From a sitting to a standing position 1 Lower the Carendo until the resident's feet are in contact with the floor. 2
Activate the brake.

Help the resident to stand up.

Dependent residents From the wheelchair/chair to Carendo with a passive lift: Follow the separate operating instructions regarding the passive lift. 1
Apply the brakes on the Carendo.

Place the passive lift with the resident as close as possible to the Carendo. Position the resident in the sling directly over the seat of Carendo.

Raise the Carendo until the seat reaches the resident and there is slack in the sling straps. Unhook and remove the sling.

Secure the resident with the strap if needed.
5
Transfer the resident to shower or toilet.
From the bed to Carendo with a ceiling lift: Follow the separate operating instructions regarding the ceiling lift. 1
Place the Carendo under the ceiling lift with the resident in the sling.

Apply the brakes on the Carendo.

Lower the sling with the resident until he/she reaches the seat of Carendo. Unhook and remove the sling.
4
Secure the resident with the strap if needed.
5
Transfer the resident to shower or toilet.
From the wheelchair/chair to Carendo with an active lift: Follow the separate operating instructions regarding the active lift. 1
Apply the brakes on the Carendo.

Place the active lift with the resident as close as possible to the Carendo. Position the resident directly over the seat of the Carendo.

Apply the brakes on the active lift.

Lower the resident till he/she reaches the seat of Carendo. Unhook sling and remove, if present.

Secure the resident with the strap if needed.

Transfer the resident to shower or toilet.

Place the Carendo with the resident in the shower room.

Apply the wheel brakes.

Raise the chair in a sitting position to a comfortable height for the caregiver.

Activate the Care Raiser on the handset.

Pull down the trousers to the knees (5a) and if the resident uses incontinence pads, remove them by pulling from behind (5b).

Raise the Carendo to a sitting position with the handset.
WARNING Make sure that no hands or other body parts get jammed between moving parts of the lift. 7
Undress the resident.

Activate the reclined position on the handset.
WARNING ALLWAYS visually ensure that male genitals do not slide under the Care Raiser seat during lowering movement of the seat. 9
Wash and shower the resident in this position (9a). Adjust the height of the chair for a correct working posture during hairwash and pedicure (9b and 9c).
10 Dry the resident with a towel. 11 Adjust the Carendo to a sitting position. 12 Dry the back of the resident. 13 Dress the upper part of the body and pull up the trousers to the knees (13). 14 Activate the Care Raiser on the handset. 15 Put on the incontinence pads, if used, and pull up the trousers completely (15). 16 Adjust the Carendo back to a sitting position and lower the chair. Secure the resident with the strap, if needed.
WARNING Make sure that no hands or other body parts get jammed between moving parts of the lift. 17 Release the brakes. 18 Ready for transportation (18).
