2. Purpose
4. Putting into operation
The product is used for drilling, thread-cutting, screwing in and unscrewing screws and positioning drill wires in bone surgery. The drill has a power take-off shaft with a hollow bore so that drill wires can be briefly clamped and guided with the drill for safe work. The tool chuck (accessory) permits simple and rapid clamping of the particular tools. By choosing the required chuck, compatibility with the tool range is ensured.
¾ To put the ACCULAN drill GA 620 D into operation, you require the following components: – ACCULAN charger GA 627 M – Battery GA 626 – ACCULAN drill GA 620 D – Tool chuck ¾ Before putting the drill into operation for the first time, ensure that the required accessories are available. You require charger GA 627 M and at least one battery GA 626 to guarantee operation of the drill.
NOTE ¾ When the ACCULAN drill is used for positioning drilling wires (KIRSCHNER wires), the safety sleeve 28 (GA 437 224) must be mounted in order to avoid possible injury.
3. Mode of operation The ACCULAN drill 16 is an electric motor supplied with power by a battery with the speed electronically controlled. The speed can be regulated up to 900 rpm with the lower trigger 20. The direction of rotation can be changed, especially for thread cutting and removing bone screws. To do this, press the upper trigger 19 first and then additionally press the lower trigger 20. You can regulate the speed of the drill continuously up to 900 rpm. Drill GA 620 D 16 is outfitted with a spindle cannula that allows for mounting of a guide lances or similar device measuring up to 3.4 mm in diameter. Note The continuous speed regulation necessitates electronic components. The conditions prevailing during sterilization (steam, temperature, etc.) subject these components to considerable stress. To avoid this stress, the entire electronics of the drill are integrated into the battery 25, which must not be sterilized. The battery 25, should be treated with the care usual for surgical instruments.

5. Installation 25 5.1 Inserting the battery (Fig. 1-3) IMPORTANT Nickel-cadmium batteries must not be heated above 65 °C and therefore must not be sterilized. The following procedure should be adopted for the sterile preparation of this drill: ¾ The drill is placed upside down (battery shaft pointing upwards) and the funnel 26 (sterile) which is mounted on the drill. ¾ The battery 25 (non-sterile) which is then inserted into the charging shaft, by a second person (the battery cannot rotate) and the funnel 26 then removed and is placed in the non-sterile area. ¾ The cover 23 (sterile) is then mounted and must be fixed in securely.

5.2 Removing the battery (Fig. 4)
5.3 Connection of the tool chuck to the drill
After the end of the operation and prior to cleaning and disinfection and especially before sterilization, the battery must be removed. ¾ To do this, the two cover releases 24 on the cover 23 must be pressed simultaneously to enable the cover to be removed (the cover cannot be removed if only one release is pressed). This ensures that accidental opening is prevented if only one release is pressed. ¾ Prior to battery removal, make sure that the trigger for left-handed rotation 19 and the trigger for speed control 20 are in the front position (rest position). ¾ The battery can be removed from the battery shaft by tapping on the open hand (Fig. 4).
¾ In order to prevent the drill from being put into operation accidentally, press the trigger lock 21 before changing the tool chuck. To enable the drill to be used, tool chucks are required for the tools, such as drill bits, thread cutters, etc.

For positioning drill wires (KIRSCHNER), we recommend using the special fast-action chuck GB 437 R 12 or GB 439 R 14. Drilling wires of 0.7 mm to 2.5 mm can be rapidly and simply clamped using this fast-action chuck. When using long drill wires, the supplied drill wire safety sleeve 28 (GA 437 224) of the drill should be put in place to prevent injuries. Fig. 4

5.3.1 Coupling
5.3.2 Uncoupling
¾ Push the tool chuck 3, 6, 8, 9, 10 or 11 onto the driven shaft of the drill until it is clearly fixed into place (a snap action).
The chuck 3, 6, 8, 9, 10 or 11 are removed by first pressing them gently against the drill and then removing them by pulling back the release sleeve 4.
Fig. 8: Coupling ¾ Regarding the chuck 6, 8, 9, 10 and 11, it may be necessary to turn the tool adapter slightly on the shaft during coupling to enable the octagonal section of the driven shaft to engage. ¾ When coupling, do not hold the release sleeve 4. ¾ To attach the Kirschner wire chuck 12 or 14, fit the Kirschner wire chuck on the drill and secure it with the clamp lever 13.

5.4 Connection of the tools to the tool chuck 5.4.1 Connection of tools with Aesculap square shaft or hexagonal shaft ¾ To attach a tool to the chuck, first push the tool 1 or 7 with an Aesculap square or hexagonal shaft into the chuck 3 or 8. Rotate the tool until you find the position for the square/hexagonal shaft and push the tool in as far as it will go.
5.4.2 Connection of tools with AO shaft ¾ For coupling, pull the tool release sleeve 2 towards the drill 16, hold it in this position and insert the tool 5 with AO shaft. Turn the tool 5 into the corresponding position of the flat section and push it as far as it will go. Now let go of the tool release sleeve 2, which must snap into place clearly. If the tool release sleeve 2 does not snap into place, pull the tool 5 gently until the tool release sleeve 2 engages.
NOTE Before attaching the square shaft, tool chuck GB 411 R must be secured on the driven shaft of the drill! A tool can only operate if the chuck is fitted on the drill.

6. Operation ¾ The drill is regulated continuously up to 900 rpm by pressing the lower trigger 20. It automatically operates in the right-handed direction (clockwise). ¾ To change from right-handed operation to left-handed operation (anti-clockwise), first press the upper trigger 19 and then additionally the lower trigger 20. As was previously the case for right-handed operation, you can now also regulate the speed continuously up to 900 rpm. Note Owing to the electronics used, a quiet beep tone is heard shortly before the smooth start-up of the drill. This tone immediately becomes quieter when the drill starts up.

Prevention of unintentional operation
8. Care and handling
To prevent the drill from being switched on accidentally (e.g. while changing a tool), the speed control trigger 20 is outfitted with a trigger lock 21. Explanation of symbols:
CAUTION
ON: The machine is in the ready state. OFF: The speed control trigger is blocked. The machine cannot be started. a) By turning the trigger lock to the OFF position, you can block the speed control trigger. Accidental operation of the machine is thus prevented. b) By turning the trigger lock to the ON position, the speed control trigger is released. The machine is now in the ready state.

7. Function test
Fluids or sterilization will damage the rechargeable battery! ¾ Prior to any preparation, remove the rechargeable battery from the device. ¾ Never sterilize the rechargeable battery!
8.1 Manual preparation 8.1.1 Cleaning and disinfecting ¾ The ACCULAN drill can be cleaned and disinfected with all commercially available cleaning and disinfecting solutions that are suitable for cleaning anodized aluminum surfaces and that may be used in conformance with national and state laws. The manufacturer’s instructions with regard to dilution ratios, action time, etc. must be followed. ¾ Clean the ACCULAN drill with a soft brush or with a cloth that has been moistened in disinfecting solution. CAUTION ¾ Do not lay, immerse or heat the ACCULAN drill in any fluid. Laying or immersing the saw in fluid will damage its mechanical components. Should any fluid penetrate the unit, allow it to run out immediately. 8.1.2 Sterilization
¾ Each time before use, the drill with the mounted tool chuck must be subjected to a test run. ¾ Run the drill in the right-handed direction and briefly in the lefthanded direction. During the test run, ensure that the chuck and the tool are correctly fitted to the drill and observe the correct direction of rotation. The battery must be inserted prior to this function test. Note Each intraoperative battery change has to be followed by a function test!
¾ In order to achieve safe and reliable sterilization of the saw, the cover 23 must first be removed. ¾ Sterilize the ACCULAN drill 16, cover 23 and funnel 26 in a steam sterilizer only. ¾ Sterilize with steam, taking note of the following: Carry out steam sterilization via an approved steam sterilization procedure (e.g. sterilizer in conformance with EN 285/ANSI/AAMI/ ISO 11134-1993, ANSI/AAMI ST46-1993 and validated in conformance with EN 554/ISO 13683). Carry out prevacuum sterilization for a minimum of 5 minutes at 134 °C and at 2 bar pressure. ¾ As needed, lay the components on a textile surface or wrap them in cloths. ¾ Position the ACCULAN drill in the sterilizer in such a way that any condensation that forms in the battery shaft will run out. The battery shaft must be absolutely dry after sterilization. CAUTION ¾ Do not under any circumstances sterilize the rechargeable batteries, since heating them to a temperature above 65 °C will cause irreparable damage to them.

8.2 Mechanical preparation
9. Maintenance
8.2.1 Cleaning and disinfecting
CAUTION
Improper mechanical cleaning will damage the ACCULAN drill! ¾ Clean the ACCULAN drill in a suitable storage tray only. ¾ Use a suitable cleaning and disinfecting cycle for mechanical cleaning. ¾ Do not use alkaline cleaning agents.
¾ Perform mechanical cleaning immediately after the operation. ¾ Place storage tray GB 509 R in a suitable wire basket (e.g. JF 214 R). ¾ Position the ACCULAN drill properly in storage tray GB 509 R immediately after the operation. ¾ To avoid abrupt changes in temperature, use a single-chamber washer disinfector. ¾ Select a cleaning and disinfecting cycle according to the following criteria: – Neutral cleaner – Cleaning temperature ≤ 50 °C – Final rinse with simultaneous thermal disinfection in demineralized water. Example: Miele Vario TD process. ¾ Follow the instructions for use of the Aesculap ECCOS storage system TA 009 721.
To ensure reliable operation, Aesculap recommends that maintenance be performed after 300 reprocessing cycles, at least once per year. ¾ For services to this end, please contact an Aesculap/B. Braun representative in your country, see Technical Service. Note The battery compartment of the drill 16 is closed giving an air and water tight compartment with the closure 23. The silicone seal in the closure 23 and the sealing surface on the drill handle should therefore be checked regularly.
8.2.2 Sterilization Sterilize the ACCULAN drill immediately after it has been cleaned mechanically. ¾ The drill can remain in the support during sterilization. ¾ Sterilize with steam, taking note of the following: Carry out steam sterilization via an approved steam sterilization procedure (e.g. sterilizer in conformance with EN 285/ANSI/AAMI/ ISO 11134-1993, ANSI/AAMI ST46-1993 and validated in conformance with EN 554/ISO 13683). Carry out prevacuum sterilization for a minimum of 5 minutes at 134 °C and at 2 bar pressure.
