1 General Information Introduction The BD Alaris™ neXus Syringe Pumps (referred to as Pump throughout this manual, unless a specific pump model is under consideration) are designed to deliver a continuous and accurate infusion whenever small fluid volumes need to be administered with great precision. High performance, comprehensive alarm protection and sophisticated monitoring systems combined with simple operation make these syringe pumps suitable for both general and critical infusions in a variety of areas within a hospital.
Product Familiarity Ensure that you are fully familiar with the Pump by carefully studying the Directions For Use (DFU) prior to operation and prior to attempting any repairs or servicing. As part of continuous improvement, product enhancements and changes are introduced from time to time.
Purpose of this manual This Technical Service Manual (TSM) shows how to set up, test and maintain the following BD Alaris™ neXus Syringe Pump models: • BD Alaris™ neXus CC Syringe Pump (Models: CCneXus1, CCneXus1-S) • BD Alaris™ neXus PK Syringe Pump (Model: PKneXus1) It is intended for use by personnel experienced in medical equipment testing and maintenance procedures. This manual has been prepared for use by Qualified Service Personnel only. BD recommends that all servicing should only be carried out by BD certified Qualified Service Personnel. General precautions Please read the general Operating Precautions described in the Directions For Use carefully prior to using the Pump. This Pump contains electrostatic sensitive components. Observe strict precautions for the protection of electrostatic sensitive components when attempting to repair and service the Pump. An explosion hazard exists if the Pump is used in the presence of flammable anaesthetics. Exercise care to locate the Pump away from any such hazardous sources. An electrical shock hazard exists if the Pump casing is opened or removed. Refer all servicing to Qualified Service Personnel.

This Pump is protected against the effects of high energy radio frequency emissions and is designed to fail safe if extremely high levels of interference are encountered. Should false alarm conditions be encountered, either remove the source of the interference or regulate the infusion by another appropriate means.

If the Pump is dropped, subjected to excessive moisture, humidity or high temperature, or otherwise suspected to have been damaged, remove it from service for inspection by Qualified Service Personnel. When transporting or storing the Pump, use original packaging where possible, and adhere to temperature, humidity and pressure ranges stated in the Specifications section and on the outer packaging. When connected to an external power source, a three-wire (Live, Neutral, Earth) supply must be used. If the integrity of the external protective conductor in the installation or its arrangement is in doubt, the Pump should be operated from the battery. BDTM00010 Issue 4

ON/OFF button – Press once to switch the Pump on. Press and hold down for approximately three seconds to switch the Pump off. Note: Logs are maintained for power down events including when the Pump is powered down or unexpected power loss. RUN button – Press to start the infusion. The Green LED will flashes during infusion. HOLD button – Press to put the infusion on hold. The yellow LED is lit while on hold. MUTE button – Press to silence alarm for two minutes. The alarm re-sounds after this time. To re-enable the alarm audio press the MUTE button a second time. 2 Configuration and Calibration Service Mode Entering Service Mode At no time should Service Mode be entered while the Pump is connected to a patient. Service Mode should only be accessed by qualified and trained personnel. 1. Hold down b and turn the Pump on a. 2. Enter the required access code using the f keys and the NEXT softkey. 3. When the required code shows on screen, press OK to confirm.
Access codes The Pump software contains a number of configuration and test routines that can be accessed by the user. The majority of tests are menu driven from a technical access code (see below). Note: The Pump should be power cycled after entering any new calibration or configuration information prior to performing any validation tests.

Cold Start (RAM Clear) Access code 301 (Fully Dedicated) should not be used in the field to set the dedication mode of the Pump. This code is for factory use only. • Using access code 301 on Pump model CCneXus1 has no effect. The Pump is set to a dedicated mode by default. • Using access code 301 on Pump model CCneXus1-S and confirming the ILPM Always message by pressing YES softkey sets the Pump to a dedicated mode. This action is irreversible unless the Control PCB of the Pump is replaced. • Using access code 301 on Pump model PKneXus1 has no effect.

When enabled, the ml/h rate, volume infused (VI) and volume to be infused (VTBI) are displayed to two decimal places. When disabled, the ml/h rate, VI and VTBI are displayed to one decimal place.
REMINDER SIGNAL
When enabled there is an audible notification, consisting of four beeps every ten minutes for the Low Battery and Near End of Infusion alarms. Feature only available if 3RD EDITION ALARMS are enabled. (Code 418)
Configuring Pump for use with Wi‑Fi, Alaris™ Gateway Workstation or BD Alaris™ MRI Capsule To configure a Pump for use with Wi‑Fi, the Alaris™ Gateway Workstation or the MRI Capsule enter access code 251 on the Pump for Configured Options. Note: Steps 1–5 are sufficient for the Pump to work with the Alaris™ Gateway Workstation or the BD Alaris™ MRI Capsule. To configure a Pump for use with Wi‑Fi, steps 6 and 7 are also required. 1. Select GENERAL OPTIONS from the Configured Options menu using the f keys and press the OK softkey. 2. Verify that the symbol appears against NURSE CALL FITTED and RS232 SELECTED options:

Configure Alarm Tone (418) Pumps have two sets of alarm tones to choose from during configuration. The alarm tone options available are: • ORIGINAL ALARMS: Low, medium and high priority alarm tones that sound similar to previous Alaris™ Plus infusion pump models. • 3RD EDITION ALARMS: Low, medium and high priority alarm tones in accordance with IEC 60601-1 Edition 3.1. Selecting 3RD EDITION ALARMS also allows configuration of the REMINDER SIGNAL under the General Options setting. Changing the alarm tone settings should only be performed by Qualified Service Personnel. 1. Select the required Alarm Preset using the f keys. The setting toggles between 3RD EDITION ALARMS and ORIGINAL ALARMS. 2. Once the correct option is selected, press OK to confirm. The default setting is ORIGINAL ALARMS. All Pumps in a single care area should be configured with the same alarm tones to avoid User confusion. The Hospital/Facility is responsible for selecting and configuring the desired alarm scheme.

Data Set Transfers Note: If BD Alaris™ Communication Engine (ACE) is used at the facility, it should be used to manage automatic deployment of data sets to all Pumps used at the facility. It allows for quicker and easier data set management without the need to take the Pump out of clinical use. The method described in this section should be used to deploy data sets to Pumps that do not connect to BD Alaris™ Communication Engine.
Data Set Transfer (401) Upload data set to a BD Alaris™ neXus Syringe Pump
Requirements: • PC: - Minimum hardware requirements · Multi-core processor (Intel Core i5 or above recommended) · 4GB RAM or above · 10GB of available hard disk space (with operating system installed) - Software requirements · Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 64-bit or Windows 10 Professional 64-bit • BD Alaris™ neXus Editor Software Kit (1000SP02159) • RS232 cable (1000SP01183) • USB to Serial Adapter Kit (12273817) – optional • USB to RS232 converter 4 way hub (1000EL00980) – optional Using the BD Alaris™ neXus Transfer Tool allows an approved data set to be uploaded to the Pump. At no time should the BD Alaris™ neXus Transfer Tool be used to upload to a Pump while the Pump is connected to a patient. The character set used in the data set should match the character set used on the Pump. Character mismatch may result in an Assertion error. 1. Connect the Pump to PC using RS232 cable and USB to Serial Adapter or 4-way hub (optional). 2. Power up the Pump in Service Mode and enter access code 401 using the f keys and the OK softkey. 3. Select RS232 interface using the f keys and the OK softkey. 4. Start BD Alaris™ neXus Transfer Tool 5. Select the Data Set Upload button (Ctrl+U). The Data Set Upload Wizard is displayed. Click Next to continue. 6. Select the serial port(s) required to transfer the data set to the Pump(s). Click Next to continue. 7. Click the Select Data Set button and Open the required data set. The selected data set and path are displayed. Click Next to continue. 8. Enter the Data Set ID and click Validate. If the data set ID entered matches the ID of the selected data set the Next button becomes available. Click Next to continue. 9. The data set selection is now complete. Click Finish. The file information is updated to show the File used, Data Set and Supported Pump Types. 10. On the Pump press the START softkey to begin transfer. 11. When the transfer is complete, the Pump validates the data then display Transfer Complete. The Transfer Tool indicates the status as Waiting for user to accept Data Set. Note: Ensure the data set ID shown on the Pump is identical to the one transferred. 12. Press ACCEPT softkey on the Pump to confirm correct transfer and exit. The Transfer Tool indicates the status as Data Set Deployed to the Pump. 13. Switch off the Pump by holding the power button for three seconds and disconnect from the PC. 14. If multiple uploads of the same data set are required, connect the next Pump and repeat steps 1–2 and 9–12. 15. When all uploads are complete, close the Transfer Tool.

Loading the Transfer Tool software is considered a non-clinical service activity. Interconnecting the Pump with a PC may cause the safety or electromagnetic environment to change while the connection exists. The threat of higher leakage currents or EMI disturbances may be present. Disconnect the IrDA or RS232 cable connection at both ends following software upload activities. Note: For more information relating to the BD Alaris™ neXus Editor Software refer to the relevant Directions For Use supplied with the software. Note: After data set upload it is advisable to switch the Pump off and then wait 10 seconds before powering on again. Also the new parameters will not take effect until the Pump has been powered up in normal operation mode and CLEAR SETUP option has been selected.
Download CQI Event Log (402) (CCneXus1 and CCneXus1-S only) Using BD Alaris™ neXus Transfer Tool, included in the BD Alaris™ neXus Editor Software Kit, allows the CQI Event Log to be downloaded from a BD Alaris™ neXus CC Syringe Pump to a PC for use with the Guardrails™ CQI Reporter. The Guardrails™ CQI Reporter is a program for querying and reporting on the collective event data allowing the user to analyse trends in medication administration and track medication errors. For more information relating to the BD Alaris™ neXus Editor or the Guardrails™ CQI Reporter refer to the relevant Directions For Use supplied with the software.

Use of the 0000TG00200 Digital Occlusion Testgear. The 0000TG00200 Occlusion testgear uses a digital force gauge to register applied forces. Please refer to the MecMesin Compact Gauge Operation Instructions supplied for detailed operational information and power options and requirements. To prepare the testgear for use, load into the syringe Pump. • Ensure there is nothing touching the testgear plunger (such as the syringe plunger drive). • Turn on the Compact Gauge using the On/Zero key. • Select kg force units, and MAX reading option. • If the display indicates other than 0.00kg, zero the system using the On/Zero key. Operate the system as required for performing the calibration activity. Before the next use, ensure the MAX reading is cleared using the On/Zero key.

BATTERY calibration 1. Remove the battery cover. 2. Pull the plunger out, to between half and full travel. 3. Connect the Pump to AC power. 4. Select BATTERY CALIBRATION from menu and press OK. 5. The Pump automatically runs the battery calibration. Battery calibration cycles the battery through a charge, discharge and re-charge sequence during which the gas gauge within the battery pack is updated with a measurement of the current capacity of the cells. Battery compartment should be ventilated during calibration (open battery cover). Pump may fail calibration if too hot, so care should be taken not to calibrate too many Pumps in close proximity (in a docking station, for example). Ensure that the battery is supported as the battery compartment is opened. The plunger drive moves automatically during the discharge phase. The plunger drive must be positioned away from the end of travel, between half and full travel, and must not be obstructed during calibration (remove syringes etc.). Disconnecting the AC power at any time during calibration will cause battery calibration to fail. 6. When calibration is complete, the following is shown on the display: 4 1 5

7. All pass criteria (see table above) should be met and the Pump should display FINISH at the end of the calibration otherwise calibration has failed. If calibration has failed retry calibration or replace battery. A new battery or battery that has been in storage may fail its initial calibration run. From these states most batteries require conditioning with at least three charge/discharge cycles to achieve their maximum capacity. Therefore batteries failing an initial calibration run should not immediately be considered defective. 3 Preventative Maintenance Preventative Maintenance To ensure the Pump remains in good operating condition, routine and preventative maintenance inspections are required. Routine maintenance inspections should be performed by hospital/facility before each use, see Directions For Use for details. Preventative maintenance inspections should be performed at least every three years. For the preventative maintenance inspection the following should be performed: • Full visual inspection of the Pump, internal and external • Fitting of all updates required • Battery test and/or replacement • Clean the Pump • Performance Verification Procedure Following all spare part replacement and repair activities, testing must be performed in accordance with the ‘Performance Verification Procedure’ (PVP). Additional testing and calibration may be required after certain repairs are completed; see table in Chapter 6 ‘Corrective Maintenance’ for more information.
Visual Inspection Open the Pump, as per Chapter 6 ‘Corrective Maintenance’ and visually inspect the interior of the Pump. Visually inspect the exterior of the Pump checking the following: • Labels should be replaced as required if not flat, legible or fully adhered. • Check keypad for any sign of wear and replace as required. • Case components must be checked for damage and replaced if necessary. • Check the pole clamp is not damaged and that it functions correctly. • Inspect the AC power supply plug and cable for damage. • The case should be clean and free from IV solution residue, especially near moving parts. • Check for dried solution deposits on accessible areas of pressure transducer and plunger mechanism. • Check the antenna cables are not damaged or trapped.

Recommended Cleaning and Storage To ensure this Pump remains in good operating condition, it is important to keep it clean and carry out the routine procedures described below. All servicing should only be performed by Qualified Service Personnel. Thoroughly clean external surfaces of the Pump, by wiping over with a lint-free cloth, lightly dampened with warm water and a standard disinfectant/detergent solution. Recommended cleaners are: • Hibiscrub 20% (v/v) • Virkon Disinfectant 1% (w/v) The following products were tested and are acceptable for use on the BD Alaris™ neXus Syringe Pump range if used in accordance with the specified manufacturer’s guidelines. • Warm soapy water • Mild detergent in water (e.g. Young’s Hospec) • 40% isopropyl alcohol in water • Chlor-Clean • Clinell Universal wipes • Reynard • TrieGene Advance • Tristel Fuse sachets • Tristel Trio wipes system • Tuffie 5 wipe • Tuffie Disinfectant Do not use the following disinfectant types: • Disinfectants which are known to be corrosive to metals must not be used. These include: - NaDcc (such as Presept) - Hypochlorites (such as Chlorasol) - Aldehydes (such as Cidex) • Cationic surfactants >1% (such as benzalkonium chloride) • Mixture of alcohol and chemicals with cationic surfactants >1% chlorohydrocarbons (such as Amberclens) • Use of iodine (such as Betadine) will cause surface discoloration. • Concentrated isopropyl alcohol based cleaners will degrade plastic parts. • Before cleaning always switch off and disconnect from the AC power supply. Never allow fluid to enter the casing and avoid excess fluid build up on the Pump. Do not use aggressive cleaning agents as these may damage the exterior surface of the Pump. Do not steam autoclave, ethylene oxide sterilise or immerse this Pump in any fluid. • If the Pump has visible cracks or damage to the case do not clean and immediately take it out of service for examination by Qualified Service Personnel. • Ensure the pressure transducer is free from residues, which may prevent correct operation of the disc detector. The syringe and extension sets are disposable single use items and should be discarded after use according to their manufacturers’ instructions. The lock box can be removed for cleaning. This should be performed by Qualified Service Personnel only, with reference to this TSM (see Appendix, ‘Lock box Accessory’). If the Pump is to be stored for an extended period it should be first cleaned and the internal battery fully charged. Store in a clean, dry atmosphere at room temperature and, if available, employ the original packaging for protection. Once every three months during storage, carry out functional tests as described in this Technical Service Manual and ensure that the internal battery is fully charged.
