A. Unpacking When delivered by a forwarder, the chair comes pre-assembled on a disposable pallet crate
IMPORTANT NOTE: Use a forklift for transportation! Pallet crates are not stackable! Do not cut into the crate hood to prevent damage of the upholstery underneath! 1. Cut and remove outer straps from pallet crate. 2. Lift hood and put it aside. 3. Cut and remove inner straps for fixation of the chair. 4. Remove the chair from pallet base.
B. Assembly The UNIVERSAL 4 is almost operational when delivered. Only the head segment and the footrest is still to be mounted. 1. Mounting the Head Segment Guide flat steel shaft of head segment carefully into the slot at the upper side of the backrest until you feel it snapping in. To remove the head segment the strength of the ball-catch has to be overcome. 2. Attaching the Head Cushion The separate head cushion is connected to a burdock belt, allowing variable attachment to the backrest. 3. Mounting the Footrest Slide the cantilevers on the foot board into the receptacles of the slide traveling on both sides of the leg segment. The flared arms permit a high and a low base position. For extremely tall patients the maximum foot space is achieved with the low base position and the telescope pulled out to the limit stop. In the outer position of the footrest and steeply adjusted leg segment the foot rest could damage the floor. Place upholstery correctly ! in shell. Advice: incorrect placement may cause damage to leg-segment shell.

Technisches Handbuch Instruction for Use and Maintenance 4. Adjustment of Armrests Underneath the ball and socket joints of each armrest is a locking lever. In the unlocked setting, the armrest moves freely around the ball for adjustment. Turn the armrest into the standard position in a right angle to the backrest and parallel to the sitting area. For locking the desired position, the locking lever is to be tightened clockwise with moderate force. The friction in the ball and socket joint will easily hold the weight of the arm. For overload protection, however, it will give, if a patient loads it with his full body weight.
Will the armrest be moved without releasing the locking lever, the cover of the armrest carrier at height adjustable armrests can damage the upholstery.
If the locking lever is pulled downwards, it can be rotated freely and adjusted to a parallel position. When pulled back by the release spring, the lever is engaged with the screw for locking and unlocking.
The bolt has to be fixed with the reverse-nut reverse-nut to be released for unscrewing the bolt
The unintended tilt-effect can be eliminated by unscrewing the bolt between the armrest and the ball and socket joint. To adjust the bolt, the reverse-nut must be released. Please note, that after this modification an outstreched positioning of the arm is no longer possible.

Technisches Handbuch Instruction for Use and Maintenance 5. Optional Feature: Height Adjustable Armrests With the optional height adjustable armrest the ellbow rest height can be altered. Lift the upper end of the armrest upholstery to select one of three positions where it will snap into position by ist own weight. For returning it to the lowest postion, it is to be pulled up to the limit stop until the snap mechanism will disengage. 6. Attachment of the Remote Control Switch The remote control switch at the end of the cable can be attached to either armrest in different positions by the enclosed burdock belt. The burdock connection on the rear side of the housing allows simple detachment of the handswitch without removing the belt, if desired by the staff. 7. Electrical Outlet The plug on the power cord is to be connected to a 230 Volt/50 HZ outlet fused by 16 Amps depending on the data on the rating plate. Passing over the power cord with casters should be avoided by appropriate installation. To avoid any damage, the netcable has to be rolled up before moving the chair and has to be laid on the seat or hang up over the armrest in the rolled up condition. 8. Power Switch An ON-OFF power switch, located under the seat on the left activates the chair. In the ONposition the key switch is illuminated, indicating that the chair is operational. If the chair is not in use, electrical power should be switched off for safety and energy conservation.

Technisches Handbuch Instruction for Use and Maintenance
C. Instructions for handling Intended use for Bionic therapy chairs is the temporary sitting or lying position of patients or donors during treatment under medical supervision. All users of the chair, especially personnel, patients or donors have to be instructed in the handling of the chair and have to be made aware of the risks. We recommend to hand out this instruction to all users and to make sure that it is read and well understood.
Attention: Damage Please make sure that movements of the chair are not restricted by architectural facts i.e. window sills, maintenance cables etc. Damage of the back segment motor or of the joints can occur.
Attention: Danger of tipping over of the chair When the footrest is extended and the seat segment is further lowered the footrest can raise the chair upwards. Damage of the floor covering or the joints can happen and the chair can tip over. The maximum load for each armrest is 60 kg.

Technisches Handbuch Instruction for Use and Maintenance 1. Electrical Adjustment / Functions of Handswitch The UNIVERSAL 4-B chair is equipped with five setting motors, permitting the patient to adjust the chair to the most comfortable sitting or relaxing position by finger tip control. The setting motors can be activated either by the patient or the staff through the remote handswitch. Three motors adjust the inclination of the upholstered segments, one varies the sitting height from 58 to 80 cm and the fifth motor allows adjustment of the footrest. The red color coded key activates all three motors for the three upholstered segments instantaneously and simultaneously to bring the patient into the head down position. The blue key corresponding to the red one is to return to most upright position. After reaching an end position each motor is switched off automatically. In end position the motor does not respond to further signals for that direction. The same happens in case of overload, i.e. due to overweight patients, sitting position with extremely dislocated gravity center, leaning of the patient or a second person on the nearly horizontal foot or back segment. After elimination of the overload situation the regular function should reoccur.

2. Adjustment of the Footrest In addition to the described pre-adjustment of the footrest by rotation of the board and the telescope, the chair has a remote motor adjustment. The footrest should be adjusted only after the final sitting position is chosen since the inclination of the leg segment determins the distance required for comfort. 3. Height Adjustment For fistula or graft punctures and other medical procedures it is often advantageous to have the patient elevated in the chair. Also patients with impaired mobility can transfer more comfortable and safely if the height can be adjusted. During dialysis and transport, however, the lowest sitting level should be used for better tilt resistance and psycological comfort. 4. Central Brake System The chair is equipped with a central brake system. Stepping on the pedal "STOP" locks all four casters. "GO" unlooks all four casters with only one step. 5. Entry and Exit During entry and exit of a patient the central brake should always be in blocked position. To facilitate entry and exit, both armrests can be swung backwards.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The footrest is not intended to be used as a step. Stepping on it with full body weight can tip over the chair

Technisches Handbuch Instruction for Use and Maintenance 6. Tipping over and inadmissible Load The chair can be used for patients up to 150 kg. For regular use the chair has enough stability. Leaning or sitting of the patient or a second person on the backrest or the leg segment in horizontal position, however, is inadmissible. The footrest is not designed as a step; stepping on it might also tip over the chair. Extreme dynamic stress from falling back or rocking may also overload the construction. If the sitting patient is to be moved in the chair over a long distance the most upright position is to be adjusted. The maximum load for each armrest is 60 kg. 7. Battery Operation in Case of Power Failure The chair has two exchangeable 9-Volt dry cell batteries underneath the electronic box. In case of power failure, the battery supplies power to return a patient into a safe and convenient position. The battery has only capacity for a few adjustments and should be replaced after such an emergency operation. 8. Electrical Safety The UNIVERSAL 4-B is designed for maximum safety against electrical shock hazard. Drive and remote control are powered with low voltage of max. 40 V DC, supplied by an enclosed isolation transformer, according VDE 0551/IEC 14D. The power supply ought not to be grounded and the plug has to have only two pins for this reason. 9. Detachable Upholstery Cushions are attached with velcro patches and held by the rim of the plastic shells. They can be detached easily without tools for cleaning, repair or replacement. 10. Halogen Lamp The halogen lamp mounted on the backrest, is connected to the chairs' power supply but has a separate on-off switch on the lamp housing and a separate fuse in the power supply. Stereo jack of the lamp (plug) shall only be plugged in when main on/off switsch of chair is switched off.

D. Maintenance and Care Although all mechanical components of the chair are maintenance free, we propose an annual inspection of the chair. Please see the following pages. The bearings of the drive are filled with a permanent greasing and must not be greased or lubricated. Because of limited shelflife of the dry cell battery should be replaced yearly even if never used. All surfaces are resistant against alcoholic cleaning and disinfecting detergents. Other detergents, especially those containing aggressive organic solvents, ought not be used before testing. In case of doubt one should try out on a limited area out of visibility.
Type Plate The type plate with serial number is attached to the cover of the power supply unit underneath the seat. For technical questions and spare part orders please indicate type of chair and serial number. The symbol marks equipment of type class B, referring to the approved leakage current, features a high degree of protection against electrical shock. The symbol marks equipment with special safety requirements to prevent electrical shock. The protection against electrical shock is not only secured through base-insulation, but there is also additional doubled or reinforced insulation. In consequence, equipment of this type is extremely safe for patients and medical staff. The data for intermittent service refer to the approved load period of the motors. Long time operation results in temperature rise of the motor winding, which can lead to damages. Intermittent service “1 min/4 min” means, that after continuous motor operation of one minute, a recovery cycle of four minutes is mandatory.

Manufacturer's Recommendations for the Inspection of Dialysis Chairs The inspection should be performed at least once a year. We recommend inclusion of the following points in the inspection:
External Damage -
Damage to casings (hand switch, motor casing, mains plug) Damage to cables (insulation, pressure and pinch points) Damage to plug contacts (bend pins) Damage to frame parts (deformation, wear and tear) Damage to accessories connected to the product (deformation, wear and tear) Damage to O-rings (if present) of plug contacts Function order of the mains plug (if present)
Functional Examination First switch all drives to end position. There must be a "click" when the end position is reached (switch function of the end position switch). During this procedure, please check carefully for abnormal noises or occlusions. Record the time for a complete hub (zero position to end position) and notify the manufacturer if these times diverge by more than 15 % from your last measurements. Check the operation of the traction relief in the sites where cables emerge from the casings / the dialysis chair. According to the operating instructions, batteries should be replaced at least once a year in drives with emergency power units. Check the cable routes. Check plug connections for firm fit. This way, major repairs can be avoided. You should therefore also train your staff to be attentive to visible or audible irregularities.
