available with your version of the system. Before using the equipment, please make yourself familiar with the information in the accompanying user information documents. Some documents are printed. Failure to follow safety instructions or use for purposes other than those described in the user manuals constitutes improper use.
Essential Performance The system can provide 2D ultrasound echo and flow imaging systems as an aid in diagnosis, data processing and -transfer, and guidance of puncture and biopsy. The system can perform simple geometric measurements and calculations. The system can guide biopsy- and puncture needles. The system is free from artifacts or distortion in the image or error of a displayed value, which can be attributed to a physiological effect and which may alter the diagnosis.

The system displays correct numerical values associated with the diagnosis to be performed. The As Low as Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) principle is used and safety related indications (MI, TIS, TIB, etc) are displayed as worst-case values. The system does not generate unintended or excessive ultrasound output or transducer surface temperature. There is no unintended or uncontrolled motion of transducer assemblies intended for intra-corporeal use. Total loss of clinical functions is an acceptable risk as one single ultrasound scanning is not the only means to perform a diagnosis.
Clinical Benefits Primary benefit of the bkActiv is to provide a qualified healthcare professional with non-biased clinical information to complement decision making and guidance in invasive clinical procedure. Consequently, bkActiv enables diagnosis assistance in minimally invasive treatment, conducted in sterile and non-sterile environments. Primary benefit is also to host or be part of machine interfaces which have a role of interpreting or obtaining ultrasound data. Secondary benefits are positive diagnostic and treatment outcomes, helping mitigate life critical situations if conducted in emergency settings or as a result of intraoperative clinical procedures. Variability in these can be seen in a variety of work-flow integrations of ultrasound in clinical practices to which bkActiv assists with presets or OEM software extensions. bkActiv is indicated for: •

Intraoperative Ultrasound for the central, peripheral nervous system, abdominal organs and rectum. The benefits in intraoperative ultrasound are in hosting interfaces for biopsies, ablation and guidance during surgery and other advanced applications, e.g.: ◦ Brain navigation (cranial IGS system, Brainlab) which enables the use of 2D ultrasound for data overlay output in real-time compared with the MRI obtained 3D-dataset. This results in minimally invasive diagnosis or neurosurgical procedures via an optimized interface to aid the accuracy of clinical outcome. ◦ Robotic surgery (Da Vinci) which is controlled by a human-machine interface resulting in minimally invasive surgery. Abdominal Ultrasound, in which the benefits are to provide information about fluid flow and anatomical landmarks related to failures in organs such as kidney, liver, gallbladder, etc., and fluid abnormalities within the abdominal cavity. Musculoskeletal Ultrasound, in which the benefit is to provide information on MSK disease and injuries in a non-invasive and faster fashion, as compared with competitive medical imaging.

Intended Purpose Intended Use bkActiv Ultrasound system is a medical device intended for diagnostic ultrasound imaging or fluid flow analysis of the human body, data processing, and guidance of puncture and biopsy. The system performs simple geometric measurements and calculations.

Intended Users The system is a diagnostic ultrasound imaging system used by qualified healthcare professionals. For professional use only. Intended users are clinical professions, sufficiently qualified in sonography, emergency response, and qualified in reprocessing and maintenance of reusable equipment.
Environment The bkActiv Ultrasound System1 is intended for use in the professional healthcare environment (e.g. hospitals, physician offices). For operation and storage environment, please see the BB1564 Care and Cleaning Guide Table 2.

Chapter 2 Before You Begin This guide describes the functionality and potential of the bkActiv Ultrasound System. The guide includes a section on safety that you must read before you start using the system, see Chapter 15, “Safety Information”. To get started, read Chapter 3, “Getting Started” for an overview of the components of the system, how to turn on and adjust the system for use and how to start an exam. For details on how to use the system to perform various exam types, see the chapters on the individual exams. In the table below you can see where to find answers to some of the general questions that are often asked about the system. Before You Start Before you turn on the system, make sure that the installation has been approved by a qualified electrician or by hospital safety personnel. Plug the power cord into a grounded wall outlet and make sure that you can get to it easily when you need to turn off/unplug the system.
Height Adjustment The paddles underneath the touchscreen let you adjust the height and the angle of the system. Lift the right paddle to adjust the height , and the left paddle to turn the system so you can operate it without the wheels getting in your way.
Monitor Adjustment You can turn the monitor to portrait or landscape as you want. The monitor also has an extendable, flexible swivel arm so it can be turned +/- 200° from the default position. To use the swivel arm, push up the green transport lock and push the monitor to the desired position. See “The bkActiv System” on page 17.
Turning System On and Off When you turn the system on or off, you must give the system enough time to save and recover open files and unsaved data. Otherwise, a serious system failure may occur that requires technical support. The power button is located on the scanning engine:

This switch helps you to preserve the battery when the system is stored or otherwise not in use for a period. To turn the system on: Press the power button once. To turn the system off: Make sure system is running. Press the power button once. Wait until power button light is off, before you unplug the system.
