Fitting the wheels to the Base Insert the two anti-static casters with brakes, through the earth cable lug and into the base. Ensure the wheel is fully inserted. Insert the two wheels without brakes into the base, ensuring the wheels are fully inserted.
Fig 2
Note: It is important that the earth PA cable is connected to the anti-static wheels to remove any static charge that may be generated during use.

Fitting the Column to the Base Unscrew the bolt and withdraw with the washer and sleeve from the column and retain these parts. Insert the column into the base so that the notch in the column is engaged onto the tab inside the base. This ensures the correct orientation of column to base, i.e. the notch is on the opposite side to the wheels with brakes. Check that once fully engaged, the column does not rotate. Replace the bolt, sleeve and washer then tighten. On the standard version check that the transformer housing fits snugly to the base indicating correct assembly.

The notch in the column MUST be fully engaged with the tab in the base. If it is not the column may rotate under use and cause the lamp to be unbalanced and therefore unsafe.

Connecting the EPU Box (EL Versions Only) On installation of the system the batteries will require charging for 24 hours to achieve full charge capacity. The system should ALWAYS be connected to the mains supply when not in use to maintain the battery charge, if this is not adhered to then the batteries may become damaged.
3.4.1
Connecting the EPU Box On MEL versions the Base box will contain the Emergency Battery Power supply pre attached to the base. After connecting the column to the base, see section 3.3 above; take the connector attached to the flying lead from the column and align the lugs in the plug with the blue socket marked ‘LAMP POWER’ fig A below. Push in the plug and then turn clockwise until an audible click is heard.

For mains power; connect the black power plug into the mains socket marked ‘MAINS POWER’, fig B above and then connect to a suitable wall power outlet.
3.4.2
Warnings
Mains Healthy Indicator - Under normal mains supply the green indicator will be illuminated.
Low Battery Warning – Batteries are about to become exhausted When the mains supply is disconnected then the yellow indicator will illuminate when the batteries are 80% discharged, showing the batteries are about to become exhausted. The operating lamp connected to the system will continue to operate until the batteries become fully discharged. At this point the batteries will be disconnected and the lamp will not illuminate. The mains supply should be re-established before the lamp will re-illuminate.

Fit the washer over the spring arm spigot and secure with the circlip using the circlip pliers supplied. It will be necessary to support the spring arm while fitting the washer and circlip. Insert the electrical plug into the electrical socket inside the spring arm and re-fit the cap on to the top knuckle and secure with the screw.

3.6
Fitting the lamp head to the Spring Arm The instructions in this section relate to the following illustration.
Fig 5 Remove the protective cap and collar from the end of the spring arm. The protective cap can be discarded. Remove the brake screw from the spring arm collar and retain it. Slide the spring arm collar over the end of the spring arm noting the orientation. Insert the lamp head arm interface into the end of the spring arm until the groove in the lamp head interface is clearly visible through the slot in the top of the spring arm.
It is important that there is a good electrical connection between the lamp head and the spring arm, but sometimes the groove in the lamp head interface will not line up with the slot in the spring arm and the segment and it will not fit in easily. If this is the case then the electrical socket in the spring arm will require adjustment. First loosen, but DO NOT remove, the X-head screw on top of the spring arm just behind the slot. Now re-insert the lamp head into the spring arm as previously described. It should be possible to fit the segment. Retighten the X-head screw on the top of the spring arm. Lock the lamp head in place with the locking segment. Rotate the spring arm collar 180° and secure in place with the brake screw. Gently screw the brake screw in place until it stops and then tighten approximately another 1/8 of a turn but do not over tighten. The lamp head should rotate freely but if it does not, reduce the tension on the brake screw.

Fitting the sterilisable handle system Before fitting the handle carrier to the lamp, ensure the grub screw is backed off 1 full turn. Screw the handle carrier on to the threaded handle mount until tight. Now screw the grub screw in until it is tight. The handle carrier should now be secure. To fit a sterilisable handle cover you only need to push the handle cover over the Carrier until an audible click is heard and the handle has locked in position. As shown below. To release the sterilisable handle cover, simply push the blue release button and the cover can be removed.

The sterilisable handle as supplied is not sterile. You must sterilise it by autoclave – typically steam sterilisation at 134°C for three minutes – or by using normal sterilising solutions in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

Commissioning the unit Check all movements of the lamp to ensure it rotates freely and that the lamp head stays in position without drifting. Before use, fit the sterilisable handle system and sterilisable handle covers to the lamp.
The sterilisable handle covers as supplied are not sterile. For a full list of items to be checked, please consult and complete the Checklist.
Refer to Section 6. Hand the Instructions for Use over to the Clinical Manager and hand the Routine Maintenance Guide over to the Engineering Maintenance Manager.
