Sling Selection Guide
Introduction A sling is an item of moving and handling equipment, which is used with a mechanical hoist in order to facilitate the transfer of a client. A sling comprises a specially designed and constructed piece of fabric, which is placed under and around a client before being attached to the carry bar of a hoist to raise, move and lower the client. Selected and used correctly, a sling and hoist will achieve a safe transfer, reducing the risks associated with manual handling. Slings are classified as a Class 1 Medical Device by the Medical Devices Agency (MDA) and are subject to rigorous safety standards and tests. It should always be remembered that use of a suitable sling, of the correct size and properly fitted, will make a significant contribution to a client’s experience of being hoisted, ensuring that this is dignified and acceptable to them. It will also provide a handler with reassurance that they can achieve the transfer that they wish and that the procedure will be executed in an effective and safe manner. The Wispa range of slings has been designed and manufactured by Chiltern Invadex for use with an appropriate Chiltern Invadex hoist. This booklet aims to assist those responsible for the provision of slings by outlining some key factors to be addressed in the selection of the most appropriate type of sling for a client. Guidance is then given as to which sling from the Wispa range will best meet these requirements.
General features of Wispa Slings There are a number of features that are common to most of the slings in the Wispa standard sling range. They are sold in pairs and will add approximately 30cm to the length of the attachment strap, adding to the versatility of the sling. Sling Prescription Sheets Provided with standard sling user guides, prescription sheets enable the handler to record key information concerning the specific application of the sling to an individual client. Clinical Support / advice Clinicians are available to assist Chiltern Invadex customers by providing clinical information and advice in relation to Chiltern Invadex slings and other products. Moving and Handling Training The correct equipment, coupled with appropriate training can minimise the risks associated with manual handling. Hoisting Options The loop options on the sling attachment straps enable a range of hoisting positions to be achieved. The attachment straps at shoulder level determine the position of the back, ranging from upright through to semi-reclined and reclined. Similarly, the attachment straps at the legs determine the approximate degree of flexion at the hip, from around 90° to 45°. The centre attachment straps allow for adjustment at hip / pelvis level, providing a closer fit and / or extra stability. The position achieved by adjusting the loops will depend upon the height and build of the client but, as a general guide, the following loop options are suggested; Upright hoisting position (figure a) -Short loops at shoulder, Long loops at leg Increased flexion at hip (figure b) -Shorten loops at leg Increased recline (figure c) - Lengthen loops at shoulder

Sling Support Levels and Commode Apertures Different types of slings provide different levels of support for the client being hoisted. The support level is determined by the shape and structure of the fabric, with the main body of the sling providing support to the back and head (Figure 1) and the leg straps providing support to the thighs, hips and buttocks (Figure 2). The shape of the sling will also determine the presence and size of a commode aperture (Figures 3 and 4). Figure 1 Levels of support provided to back & head by main body of sling

Sling Selection Guide
Selecting the best type of sling Selecting a sling for an individual client involves more than simply measuring their size and deciding what the sling will be used for. Basic factors to consider are the level of support required from the sling and whether a commode aperture is required. However, to be sure that a sling meets specific requirements and is the most appropriate sling available, many further aspects need to be considered as part of the selection process. Some of these are discussed briefly here. Information about the Client A knowledge of the client’s basic physical features, such as weight, build and / or weight distribution are necessary, as is an understanding of their abilities and limitations. Such factors indicate the support level required of the sling and will also have an impact on the client’s ability to assist with the selection of the sling and subsequent sling fittings and transfers. A clinical diagnosis may not be required, but the type of clinical condition, its course and progress are important, especially if the client has abilities that fluctuate or a progressive disorder. Some clients may have very specific requirements and needs, for example, a need to use the toilet frequently or a sling that safely and comfortably facilitates bathing. Information about the Task(s) In order to be sure that the sling selected will be suited to its required uses, it is necessary to determine the types of transfers task(s) that are desired, together with the frequency with which they will occur. This relates closely to the functional requirements of the sling, for example, a sling that is to be used for toileting will require a commode aperture. Information about the Carer(s) or Handler(s) When selecting slings it is important to be mindful of the person(s) who will be fitting the sling and using the hoist. Their abilities and limitations - especially experience and training – must be considered. Some slings are more complicated than others to fit and a handler may be reluctant to use a sling if the process of fitting it is too complex. The number of carers available to fit the sling as well as the total number of carers involved in a client’s care may also be important considerations - a range of carers may have a range of abilities. Information about other Equipment It is necessary to establish the sling’s compatibility with other equipment, especially the hoist and the hoisting system. It is also important to identify any associated equipment that is involved in transfers, such as seating, beds and trolleys, toilets, play or therapy equipment, to ascertain that the hoist and sling will work effectively with these items.

Sling Selection Guide
Selecting the correct size of sling Chiltern Invadex produce detailed sizing charts for all slings in the range and these are printed in the Wispa Slings brochure. There is usually a certain amount of overlap between each size of sling within a particular model. If the client falls between two sizes, it is generally better to select the smaller size of sling, unless you are aware that the client is likely to grow. Measurements required for Full Support Universal, CIDI and Slinci: ! around the shoulders ! from base of spine to top of head Measurement required for Universal, Hammock: ! around the shoulders Measurement required for Toileting: ! around the chest Please note: Recumbent and Amputee Slings are available in one size only.

Selecting the type of sling To simplify the process of sling selection, Chiltern Invadex have developed a flow diagram, using sling support levels and the presence or absence of a commode aperture as basic selection criteria. By following the chart through, the user will be guided towards a sling that should meet these requirements, from those available in the Wispa range.
