Connecting The Unit Because the unit is fitted with two collection jars it can either be connected as a changeover arrangement or a series arrangement. With the changeover arrangement only one jar is in use at a time, with the second jar on standby. As one jar is filled it is disconnected, so it can be emptied, and the other jar is connected. The series arrangement allows both jars to be in use at the same time, thus providing longer periods between changeover.
To Patient
Overflow Cut Off Valve in Both Jars
Changeover Arrangement To connect the unit as a changeover arrangement, use the following procedure. 1 Place two clean jars in the side holders, ensuring that both jars are fitted with an overflow cut off valve. 2 Connect the suction outlet of the jar to be used first to the suction inlet of the main unit. 3 Connect the suction inlet of the jar to be used first to the tube leading to the patient. 4 When the first jar is full, disconnect it and use steps 2 and 3 to connect the second jar.

Operation The Clements InterVac Analogue Intermittent Low Suction Pump has two operating modes. The pump can be operated in Continuous mode when suction is required all of the time or in Intermittent mode when the suction needs to be cycled on and off to minimise catheter blockage and injury to the patient. To operate the pump, follow the steps listed below.
1 Install the collection jars and tubing for either changeover or series arrangement as previously described. 2 Connect the pump to a 240 volt power outlet via the mains lead and 3 pin plug fitted to the pump. 3 Turn the power on at the power outlet and ensure that the Power On lamp is lit. 4 Using the Continuous / Intermittent mode switch select Continuous mode . 5 Occlude the suction tubing and adjust the regulator by turning the knob to obtain the required suction level, as indicated on the suction gauge. 6 Check that there are no leaks in the tubing and fittings. 7 Connect the catheter to the patient. 8 If intermittent mode is required, push the main control switch to the intermittent mode position and ensure that the intermittent mode light comes on. 9 Check the collection jars to ensure that suction is being applied correctly.

Maintenance To keep your Clements InterVac Analogue Intermittent Low Suction Pump in good working order and condition, the following maintenance is recommended.
After Each Use Clean and sterilise the collection jars, bungs, tubing and tubing nipples. These items may be safely autoclaved. Wipe the main unit with a damp cloth or sponge. Do not immerse the main unit or allow water to enter the cabinet.
After Each 100 Hours or 2 Months Replace the blue bacteria filter. Check all tubing and replace it if it is perished, soft or discoloured. Also check the tubing nipples. Check the seal rings on the bungs and replace them if they are hard, cracked or perished. Also check the fit of the seal in the collection jar. Check the float valve seals and replace them if they are perished or damaged.
The above maintenance should also be carried out immediately after use with infectious patients. Do not use phenolic solutions as disinfecting agents on the collection jars as they can cause the polycarbonate material to melt. The use of strong chemical agents on plastic parts will shorten their effective service life.
