ENGLISH/INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE

TractionTower® Extremity Traction Device REF 9905A The TractionTower Extremity Traction Device provides the surgeon with a sterile method of securing and distracting the hand and/or forearm for wrist arthroscopy and fracture reductions. If an interoperative x-ray is desired, an x-ray cassette can be placed in the desired position by adjusting the x-ray cassette bracket (figure 1). A tension scale allows accurate traction maintenance and monitoring. An adjustable ball-joint allows for wrist flexion and extension, as well as radial or ulnar, deviation. Set-up configurations allow for dorsal, as well as volar, approaches. Single-use, sterile Digit Trap® retains an atraumatic method of securing the patient’s fingers. A hook at the distal end of each retainer allows for quick patient positioning. The stand-alone design of the TractionTower Extremity Traction Device provides stability without requiring fixation to an operating table. TractionTower Assembly Components Shown in Figure 2: 1. Arm Board or Handtable The TractionTower Extremity Traction Device is designed to be used in conjunction with either an arm board or handtable. Prior to positioning the patient, all pads must be removed from the arm board or handtable. The TractionTower Extremity Traction Device is then placed approximately where the patient’s elbow will rest (metal to metal). To position the arm for surgery, place a sterile drape over the base of the TractionTower Extremity Traction Device, flex the arm 90° and rest the elbow on the sterile drape (figure 5). If a tourniquet is to be used, it should be in place at this point. The upper arm is secured to the arm board or handtable with the longer Upper Arm Strap. To accomplish this, a piece of eggcrate foam is tented over the tourniquet. The Upper Arm Strap is then passed over the tented foam pad, under the arm board or handtable, and tightened. The forearm is secured to the TractionTower Extremity Traction Device as shown below. It is important to pass the Forearm Strap through the slots on the stanchion when doing this. An optional Wrist Strap is available if additional forearm support is needed. 3

Caution: All straps should be loose enough to maintain adequate circulation in the extremity. The wrist may be positioned to allow for wrist flexion, extension, ulnar or volar deviation, with or without distraction. If distraction of the wrist is desired, rotate the micro adjustment knob in a clockwise position (figure 3). The amount of distraction applied to the wrist joint is displayed on the scale. The TractionTower Extremity Traction Device video tape gives detailed set-up and operation instructions. This tape should be viewed by the nursing staff prior to surgery.

Sterilization The TractionTower Extremity Traction Device may be sterilized by steam autoclave. Should a disinfectant solution be utilized prior to sterilization, ensure the contents of the solution do not adversely affect anodized aluminum. Test a small area prior to usage. The TractionTower should be stored sterile in a wrapped instrument tray. The Forearm Strap, Wrist Strap and Upper Arm Strap can be autoclaved if a drying cycle is used. Digit Trap retainers are a single-use, sterile product and should not be reused. Instrument Tray may be used to hold instruments during sterilization. It does not provide any level of sterility protection. An FDA cleared (U.S.) sterile wrap must be used according to the manufacturer’s instructions to maintain sterility. Follow manufacturer’s instructions for selecting the proper size and thickness of the sterile wrap. Note: Guidelines provided above do not guarantee sterility. Warning: When steam autoclave sterilization methods are used before a procedure, adequate cooling time must be allowed before use in surgery in order to prevent injury to patient or user. The available Cooling Bin (REF 9904) is designed to cool the device to approximately 94°F in 5 minutes (with 6 liters of sterile water). Allow 1 ½ hours to air cool the TractionTower Extremity Traction Device if Cooling Bin is not used.
