Intended purpose (Indications for use) The GE Datex-Ohmeda S/5TM Network and iCentral transfers information between networked GE Datex-Ohmeda devices in the GE Datex-Ohmeda Monitor Network. It also allows information transfer between several iCentrals. Within one GE Datex-Ohmeda Monitor Network it allows a networked device to display, store, print and otherwise process information received from other networked devices. The GE Datex-Ohmeda S/5TM iCentral maintains the network connections between the GE DatexOhmeda bedside monitors and other networked devices in GE Datex-Ohmeda Monitor Network. Network connections consist of hardwired network cables and/or Wireless LAN (WLAN) connections. Furthermore, it coordinates the transfer of information between devices in the GE Datex-Ohmeda S/ 5 Network as well as between the GE Datex-Ohmeda S/5 Network and Hospital Information Systems (HIS). The GE Datex-Ohmeda S/5 iCentral can be used for remote monitor management, storing, printing, viewing, reviewing or otherwise processing of information from several bedside monitors or other networked devices. The GE Datex-Ohmeda S/5TM iCentral Client can be used for remote monitor management, printing, viewing or otherwise processing of information from several bedside monitors or other networked devices. The GE Datex-Ohmeda S/5 Network will be used for patients in the hospital and it is meant for continuous use. The device is for use by qualified personnel only.

Safety precautions
1 Safety precautions The following list contains all the general warnings and cautions you should know before starting to use the system. Warnings and cautions specific to parts of the system or to a specific function can be found in the relevant section.
Warnings WARNING: A WARNING indicates a situation in which the user or the patient may be in danger of injury or death. • •
• • • • •
• • •
Do not use the Central or strip-chart recorder in the presence of flammable anesthetics. Before starting to use the system, make sure that the whole combination complies with the international safety standard IEC 60601-1-1 for the medical electrical systems and with the requirements of the local authorities. The Central and the printer shall be supplied from an additional transformer providing at least basic isolation (isolating or separating transformer) when placed in a medically used room. Without an appropriate transformer the leakage current in the system may exceed the value allowed for the medical electrical equipment. Do not connect any external devices to the system other than those specified. Use only hospital-grade grounded power outlets and power cord. Dangerous voltage. The interior components of the strip-chart recorder and other devices carry high voltage. Do not remove the cover. Some equipment malfunctions may not generate a monitor alarm. Always keep the patient under close surveillance. If liquid has accidentally entered the equipment, disconnect the power cord from the power supply and have the equipment serviced by authorized service personnel. If the system or its components fail to respond as described, do not use the monitor until tested and repaired by authorized service personnel. Always make sure that audio cables are properly connected. Never turn the volume off from the alarm loudspeakers on the display. If the volume is silenced from the display, all patient alarms will be silenced and there will be no visible indication of the silenced state. The volume should only be adjusted through the Alarm Options page.

Silencing audible alarms on the patient monitor and/or Central may compromise patient safety. When the alarms are silenced, observe the patient frequently. Alarms are shown at the Central only from the monitors within the view configuration that is being used. Make sure when changing the view configuration that you view the patients you really want to monitor. Do not use the GE Datex-Ohmeda S/5 Network Computer for running any programs other than those approved. The Central is intended to be used by qualified medical personnel only.
Cautions CAUTION: A CAUTION indicates a situation in which the unit or devices connected to it may be damaged. • • •
•
• • •
Turn off the power before making any rear panel connections. Always exit the program before you disconnect the device from the power supply. The LCD display is fragile. Ensure that the display is not placed near a heat source or exposed to mechanical shocks, pressure, moisture or direct sunlight. Do not store or use the equipment outside the temperature and humidity ranges specified in the user documentation delivered with the respective equipment. Do not turn on the strip-chart recorder before turning on the GE DatexOhmeda S/5 Network Computer it is connected to. Using the recorder without the thermal paper may destroy the thermal elements. Other transmitting radio devices using the same radio frequency band (Industrial Scientific and Medical 2.45 GHz band) may degrade or disturb the wireless network communication.
Points to note •
Installation, service and reparations are allowed for authorized service personnel only.
Disposal Dispose of the whole device, or parts of it, in accordance with local environmental and waste disposal regulations. 4

WARNING: When you connect other equipment to the Central, ensure that the whole combination complies with the international safety standard IEC 60601-1-1 and with the requirements of the local authorities. The Central and the printer shall be supplied from an additional transformer providing at least basic isolation (isolating or separating transformer) when placed in a medically used room. Without an appropriate transformer the leakage current in the system may exceed the value allowed for the medical electrical equipment. WARNING: Ensure that any additional display is properly grounded before connecting it to the Central. WARNING: Do not use the Central in the presence of flammable anesthetics. Two Patient Screens The Patient Screen displays waveforms, numeric fields, alarms, and other patient data and allows access to various system level operations. The Central supports the use of two independently configured Patient Screen displays. These two Patient Screen displays can be placed next to each other to display all monitor locations simultaneously. Additional displays can be connected to the display board of the PC with video splitters. The information displayed is identical to the respective Patient Screen. Both Patient Screens have their own screen setup (Screen 1 and Screen 2) that you can access from the Configuration view on either one of the two screens.
Switching from Patient Screen to another If your Central has two independent Patient Screens, you can move the focus from one screen to the other by moving the cursor to the desired screen. When entering a screen, the focus is in the same location as it was before the screen was left the previous time.
Recorder The Central can be equipped with a 2-inch or 4-inch strip-chart recorder that prints alarm-triggered strips and continuous waveforms, as defined in the configuration.

Overview
Main functions The S/5 iCentral (equipped with L-NET03 and other appropriate software options): − collects, displays and prints measured or interfaced patient data including real time waveforms, trends, alarms, events and full disclosure from the monitors connected to the GE Datex-Ohmeda Monitor Network. − supports remote alarm management. − collects events and other data from the anesthesia record keeping solution. − stores the configuration files for the iCentral and anesthesia record keeping solution and the user modes for the bedside monitors in the network. The data is stored on the GE Datex-Ohmeda S/5 Network Computer’s hard disk. − enables monitor-to-monitor communication in the S/5 Network with up to 16 simultaneous links. − enables real-time communication with up to three other iCentrals and data continuity with up to seven other iCentrals within the S/5 Network. − can optionally access laboratory and hospital information systems through a hospital network. − saves .pdf printouts on the hard disk as defined in the setup. These features ensure the continuity of the data between the various care areas within the S/5 Network. The iCentral Client (equipped with L-NETC03 and other appropriate software options): − connects to up 4 iCentrals for data viewing − displays and prints measured or interfaced patient data including real-time waveforms, alarms, trends, events and full disclosure from the monitors connected to the iCentral/Monitor Network. − supports remote alarm management. − can optionally access laboratory and hospital information systems through a hospital network. − saves .pdf printouts on the hard disk as defined in the setup. NOTES: − iCentral Client cannot store patient trend, full disclosure or event history data. − iCentral Client has no network server responsibilities. The iCentral can be configured with up to 32 GE Datex-Ohmeda monitors. One Patient Screen is able to show up to 16 patient sectors at a time. For details about configuring the Central, see "S/5 iCentral Technical Reference Manual."
