Before using this product, carefully read the instructions for use. Strictly follow the instructions for use. The user must fully understand and strictly observe the instructions. Use the product only for the purposes specified in the intended use section of this document. Do not dispose of the instructions for use. Ensure that they are retained and appropriately used by the product user. Only trained and competent users are permitted to use this product. Comply with all local and national rules and regulations associated with this product. Only trained and competent personnel are permitted to inspect, repair and service the product. Dräger recommend a Dräger service contract for all maintenance activities and that all repairs are carried out by Dräger. Use only genuine Dräger spare parts and accessories. Otherwise, the proper functioning of the product may be impaired. Do not use a faulty or incomplete product. Do not modify the product. Notify Dräger in the event of any component fault or failure.

Feature description
The Alcotest 9510® 1 performs a measuring cycle with a single breath sample to determine the breath alcohol concentration. When taking the breath sample breathing air is supplied to the measuring instrument via a mouthpiece during forced expiration. An infrared optical sensor2 (Alcotest 9510 Standard IR) or a combination of an infrared optical sensor and an electrochemical sensor3 (Alcotest 9510 Standard IR / EC) with different analytical specificity is used for concentration measurement. The necessary operator and test subject actions are indicated by brief messages and instructions on the instrument display (also used as touchscreen). Only if all the individual steps of the breath alcohol determination are performed correctly and none of the internal test criteria are outside the admitted tolerance, will the final result of the breath alcohol measurement be indicated. A protocol is printed on the integrated thermal printer. The operating steps on the Alcotest 9510 are optically and acoustically supported. Intended use
The Dräger Alcotest 9510 Standard IR and Dräger Alcotest 9510 Standard IR / EC are evidential breath alcohol measuring devices, which automatically analyse the breath alcohol concentration (ethanol mass per breath volume, BrAC) in the alveolar air.

Use
3.1
Prerequisites for use
The following accessories are required to operate the Alcotest 9510 Standard instruments. Check prior to setting up the instrument that all components specified are available: Mouthpieces Printer paper (thermal paper roll) Mains cable (for stationary use with mains connection) Vehicle connection cable (for mobile use with a 12 Volt supply) External keyboard (optional) External keyboard An external keyboard (QWERTY, QWERTZ or AZERTY) can be connected to the instrument via one of the USB ports. This is used in order to: enter the data of the operator and test subject enter text and numbers (such as the location or date) Operation is possible via the connected keyboard or via the touch-sensitive display (touchscreen). Using the control keys of the keyboard it is possible to navigate between the different displays and control elements. Only the keyboards specified in the list of accessories may be used for entering data, see chapter 13 on page 28. Any other keyboard must be approved by Dräger prior to use.

Preparations for use
3.2.1
Positioning the instrument
Select the installation location in such a way that the gas outlet at the rear of the instrument is not obstructed and the instrument is not exposed to direct sunlight. 1. Place the instrument on an even and solid surface. Make sure that there is enough space for the accessories (keypad, etc.). 2. Lightly pull apart the instrument lid at the markings and remove it (see fold-out, B). 3. Check that there is a paper roll in the thermal printer. If necessary, insert a new paper roll, see chapter 8.2.1 on page 26. 3.2.2 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Stationary use with mains connection
Check the mains voltage specification on the name plate. Set the power button (see fold-out, 9), to “0”. Connect the keyboard, if keyboard operation is intended. Connect the mains cable. Set the power button to "I". The instrument starts-up with the warm-up period.

Mobile use with 12 volt battery CAUTION Only batteries or DC power supply units with mains isolation (for example, according to VDE 0551) may be connected. If this is not ensured, there is a risk of damaging the instrument.
For battery operation (vehicle connection (12V DC)) the instrument requires a direct voltage of at least 10.5V DC. When the input voltage is too low, the instrument is switched off. This prevents deep discharge of the supply battery (e.g. vehicle battery).

NOTICE To ensure the mobile use of the Alcotest 9510, make sure that the vehicle battery is well charged or provide an additional battery.
1. Connect the keyboard, if keyboard operation is intended. 2. Connect the 12V connection cable (see fold-out, 12) and secure it. 3. Plug the connector of the 12V connection cable into the 12V socket of the vehicle or the cigarette lighter socket (with adaptor). 4. Move the mains switch on the 12 V connection cable to “I”. The instrument starts-up with the warm-up period.

If no measurement has been performed after 15 minutes, the instrument switches to energy saving mode. Pressing the start button allows readiness for measuring to be restored after approx. 5 minutes. 3.2.5
Downloading languages onto the instrument
The instrument provides the option of subsequently downloading available language files onto the instrument to display the text as well as the menu dialogues in the relevant language. 1. Insert the USB stick with the language file(s) (see fold-out, 15). The dialogue for downloading languages is automatically displayed. 2. Select language(s) (language 2 and/or 3). Up to 2 languages can be downloaded simultaneously. Languages marked with a star are already installed. The first language Language 1 (e.g. English) is fixed and cannot be changed (shaded in grey). 3. Select Confirm. Do you want to start language update is displayed. 4. Press YES to start the download. 5. After a successful download, Language update successful is displayed.

The following generally applies to carrying out the breath alcohol measurement: Observe a waiting time of 20 minutes after the last consumption of alcoholic beverages before starting the measurement. Make sure that no substances are ingested through the mouth or nose for a period of at least 10 minutes before the measurement (control time). Residual alcohol in the mouth can distort the measurement. This may also occur by aromatic drinks (e.g. fruit juices), alcoholic mouth sprays, medicines and drops, as well as by burping and vomiting. Rinsing the mouth with water or non-alcoholic beverages does not replace the waiting or control time!

After switching on and displaying the Dräger start-up screen, the instrument performs a self-test lasting approx. 30 seconds. After the self-test and a purging process, the instrument switches to the warm up period. After completing the warm up period, the instrument shows that it is Ready and a measurement can be started. Turning off the instrument CAUTION To prevent the instrument from being damaged, always turn it off using the Shutdown function.
1. Press Shutdown on the screen. A message confirming the shutdown will be displayed. 2. Confirm the message with YES. The message Please turn off the device. is displayed. 3. Switch off the instrument: a. For stationary operation: Set the power button to “0”. b. For mobile use: Set the switch on the vehicle connection (12 V direct current) to “0”.

Starting a measurement
1. Press the start button to start the measuring process. If the instrument is in power-save mode (STANDBY is displayed), press the start button again after the warm up period to start the measurement. Depending on the instrument setting, the data of the person being tested must be entered before measurement. The start of the measurement is displayed with the PREPARING TEST message. Exit the entry of the relevant data with Next or Reset. 4.2.1
Entering data of person being tested
The data entry is selected in the default setting. But it can also be disabled via a menu function. The figure shows the entry via the virtual keyboard. can be used to switch between capitals and lower case letters. Some keys of the virtual (internal) keyboard have multiple functions, e.g. for entering special characters. In this case, a small window appears after pressing (> 1 sec.) the relevant key, which displays the available characters. The characters can be selected by clicking on them. The instrument supports several keyboard layouts (QWERTZ, QWERTY and AZERTY). Alternatively, an external keyboard can also be used.

NOTICE If no entries are made for 10 minutes, the message DATA INPUT TIMEOUT is displayed, and the instrument goes back to READY. Up to 24 letters can be entered for a name. For names with more than 24 letters/characters, the 24th digit is the last character entered. The entry is exited with Next.
The prompt NAME OPERATOR is displayed. 1. Enter the operator name and confirm with Next. The prompt SUBJECT'S FAMILY NAME is displayed. 2. Enter the surname of the test subject and confirm with Next. The prompt SUBJECT'S FIRST NAME is displayed. 3. Enter the first name of the test subject and confirm with Next. The prompt SUBJECT'S DATE OF BIRTH is displayed. 4. Enter the digits for the day (DD), month (MM) and year (YYYY) of birth and confirm with Done.

NOTICE If implausible dates are entered, data acceptance is refused after selecting the Summary button, and a fresh date entry is requested. Up to this point, all previous entries can be recalled on the screen with Prev. The entries can be changed by making new entries or confirmed with Done.
A summary of the data entered is displayed. By double-clicking on the individual entries these can be edited again.
5. Confirm the entries for the test subject data by pressing Next. The measuring process starts immediately after the confirmation. Scrolling back through or modifying previous entries is no longer possible.

NOTICE If an external keyboard is used, the data entry can also be completed using the [Alt] + [s] key combination.
The measuring process is continued. PURGING is displayed. The measuring system is purged with ambient air. The internal zero-point is then measured, BLANK CHECK is displayed. A subsequent testing of the ambient air for alcoholic vapours with the EC sensor only takes place for the Alcotest 9510 Standard IR / EC, in which case ENVIRONMENT CHECK is displayed. If influencing factors in the ambient air can be ruled out in this test, the instrument will prompt for a breath sample to be provided. The time displayed in the bottom section shows the time at which the provision of the breath sample must be started.
6. Open the packaging of a new mouthpiece, take the breath hose out of the storage tray and insert the mouthpiece without skin contact into the handle at the end of the breath hose using the packaging. 4.2.2
Providing the breath sample
The instrument users must ensure that the person being tested has not ingested any substances through the mouth or nose during the control time (at least 10 minutes) before the delivery of the breath sample. When the display shows PLEASE BLOW, the instrument is ready for a breath sample for 3 minutes. Within this time period the person being tested has to deliver a breath sample. 1. Ask the test subject to breathe in calmly and expire the breath sample continuously and evenly into the mouthpiece until the bottom bar on the display is filled at least half. During the delivery of the breath sample the progress is indicated by the bar graph being filled. The length of the bar to be filled is a reference point for the volume to be supplied until the minimum volume is reached. It is, however, possible to continue the delivery of the breath sample when the bar graph is already filled completely. This does not impair the measurement. At the end of the breath sample If the minimum breath flow is not met, STOP BLOWING is displayed. 2. End the process of providing the breath sample immediately. Restarting (second breath) must always be avoided or the measurement will be cancelled. If the requirements for providing the breath sample are met with regard to duration, volume and continuity, REMOVE MOUTHPIECE is displayed. 3. Pull the mouthpiece from the handle at the end of the breath hose with the aid of the mouthpiece packaging and dispose of it. 4. Place the breath hose back into the storage tray or on the side of the instrument. The measuring system is purged with ambient air again and another internal calibration takes place. PURGING and BLANK CHECK are displayed in succession. If all framework conditions of the process were met, the final result is displayed in the configured unit on the display.

A measurement protocol generated at a later date includes all data of the last measurement.

NOTICE An additional measurement protocol can only be printed if no new measurement has been started yet and the instrument has not been switched off.
Errors during the measuring process
If errors are detected during the measuring process, these are indicated on the display and, dependent on the kind of error, the provision of the breath sample must be repeated or the measuring cycle is cancelled completely. MINIMUM VOLUME NOT ACHIEVED The volume of the breath sample provided is too small. For breath samples with both too small exhalation volume and too short exhalation time, the error message concerning the breath volume is shown. The provision of the breath sample has to be repeated. (A total of 3 unsuccessful attempts per measuring cycle are permissible.) TEST REPEATED Repeating a breath sample: The measuring cycle is continued if the following message is indicated, e.g. due to an insufficiently long delivery of the breath sample (less than 3 seconds). CHECK AIRWAY The controlled flow during purging is too low. Always make sure that the air inlet into the breath hose is not covered during purging. TEST ABORTED After a fourth unsuccessful attempt the measuring cycle is terminated and a corresponding message for the cause of the last unsuccessful attempt is issued with the protocol on the printer. MOUTH ALCOHOL The presence of residual mouth alcohol was detected from the concentration/time profile of the breath sample. The measuring cycle is cancelled immediately and a protocol printed with the respective information. READINESS TO BLOW EXPIRED If, after the start of the prompt, the provision of a breath sample is not started within 3 minutes, the measuring cycle is cancelled. A protocol with the respective information is printed.

Explanations concerning the measurement protocol
The details in the top part of the measuring protocol facilitate the unique identification of the measuring instrument with which the measurement was carried out and the protocol generated. Serial number Unambiguous information (4 characters, 4-digit number) assigned to only one instrument. Sample number Number of measurements with measurement protocol printout after the last service at which the counter was reset. Calibration number Control number which is changed when adjusting the instrument. The remaining details on the measurement protocol are selfexplanatory.

Summer time/winter time change-over
The time set in the instrument is indicated with the current time by an additional character. S = summer time W = winter time

This menu lets you select and set the location, time, language, etc.
The instrument automatically changes over from winter to summer time and vice versa. No user interaction is required.

Menu To select the menu options use the touchscreen function of the display with the aid of the stylus supplied.
CAUTION
!
Only use the touchscreen with the stylus. Other tools (e.g. ball point pen) might irreversibly damage the touchscreen. If no external keyboard has been connected for data entry, a virtual keyboard is automatically shown on the display which can be used with the stylus. Using the menu button in the start bar the following menus can be selected directly: Information Settings Maintenance Accept configurations and changes in the menus with Confirm. The return to the menu is automatic.
General operating information Open menu entries by double-clicking (internal keyboard). Select menu entries with the arrow keys and open with the Enter key (external keyboard). Confirm and save changes to the settings by pressing the Confirm button. The instrument returns to the menu. Exit menu entries by pressing the Close button or the cross X in the top right corner. If changes have been made, the message Do you want to save the changes? appears. Press Yes or No and the instrument returns to the menu. Dräger recommends using the supplied stylus to operate the menu.

In this submenu, the screen display can be rotated by 180°. Select or deselect the Rotate display check box.

»Printer« submenu
This submenu lets you select whether the protocol is printed using the internal or an external printer. The internal printer is always activated.
Depending on the instrument configuration, the number of measurement protocols is permanently set to 1 copy (default) or a selection can be made between 1 and 5 copies. 6.2.3
»Sound« submenu
This submenu lets you select the volume and frequency of the acoustic signal when providing the breath sample. 6.2.4
»General Functions« submenu
input of user/subject data: Here you can select or deselect the data entry prompt during measurement. Data entry is selected by default. Select or deselect the input of user/subject data check box. Turn sound while tests on/ off: This lets you determine whether a signal according to the settings in the »Sound« submenu is to be issued when providing a breath sample. Select or deselect the Turn sound while tests on/off check box.

»Errorlogger« submenu
In this submenu, the errors which occurred during operation are stored. The following are documented: Time Error code Errors in this context are operating conditions that impede any further operation of the instrument. 6.2.6
»Language« submenu
This submenu lets you select the offered languages and the keyboard layout. English and German are available as default languages in the instrument. Another language can be downloaded if this is available. The following keyboard layouts can be selected: QWERTZ, QWERTY and AZERTY. DE (QWERTZ), EN (QWERTY) or FR (AZERTY) is displayed on the start-up screen depending on the selected layout. The keyboard layout can also be selected directly in the start-up screen. Select the desired language or keyboard layout in the selection window. 6.2.7
»Location Database« submenu
This submenu can be used to create locations that can be selected when carrying out measurements. They are shown on the screen and printed on the measurement protocol.
1. Select the desired location field. 2. Enter the location. The maximum length of an entry is 17 characters. A maximum of 10 locations can be entered. 6.2.8
»Change Current Location« submenu
This submenu lets you select the location, which is shown in the second row on the screen. Select the desired location. The selected location is highlighted by a selection marker.

»Set Date and Time« submenu
This submenu lets you set the date and time. Set the time and date in succession. Small discrepancies for the internal clock can also be compensated: Use + to advance the current time by one minute. Use - to move the current time back by one minute. The time format can be selected to the right of the time field. Pressing the arrow key opens a list of available time formats. To make a selection, scroll through the list and click on the desired format.

» Maintenance « menu
This menu lets you make settings that enable a more precise analysis of the measurement results. Some of the settings changed in this menu are reset to the default values after turning off the instrument. The use of the menu items described here is only recommended for trained and qualified operators. Any use beyond the menu items described here is reserved for trained service technicians. 6.3.1
»Subject Test Settings« submenu
This submenu lets you select the unit of measurement in which the breath alcohol concentration is displayed for normal mode (active after switching on the instrument) and control mode (can be selected manually). The following units of measurement are available: µg/L mg/L µg/100 mL g/L ‰ % g/210 L The conversion between the information in breath alcohol units and blood alcohol units takes place at a blood/breath ration of 2100:1. The measurement unit setting is retained after turning off the instrument. 6.3.2
»Control Mode« submenu
This submenu lets you select the Control Mode and then select a type of test gas for the measurements. This setting is helpful for work in the laboratory. In control mode, the resolution of the information on the measurement result is increased by one decimal place compared to the normal mode. In the protocol, Control Mode is printed above the measurement result.

Troubleshooting When Lab report is selected, a special protocol with enhanced sensor data is provided. Test subject data are not printed in both cases.

Calibrate the instrument or contact DrägerService.

Ensure that the ambient conditions are met. Switch off instrument, if required put on instrument cover and switch on again. If the error should reoccur upon switch-on, inform Dräger Safety.

Recovery function
If the WinCE operating system is damaged and the instrument can no longer be normally started, the message A9510 System Recovery appears on the screen after turning on the instrument. 1. Follow the instructions on the screen to restore the operating system. 2. Before starting the function, make sure that a stable power supply exists. The function must not be interrupted. 3. Start the procedure by pressing the green start button. At the end of the procedure, the message Recovery procedure finished. Please restart device using the power button. appears. 4. Turn the instrument off and back on again at the power button. 5. In case of faults, contact DrägerService.

8.1
Inspection
Instrument inspections must be carried out by competent persons, e.g. Dräger or persons authorised by Dräger.

Replacing fuses
1. Disconnect the instrument from the power supply.
The instrument has a function that monitors the calibration interval. If this is selected, the message Days until end of calibration: xx note appears 14 days before the next calibration date after turning on the instrument. The instrument is locked after the calibration date expires. 8.2.1
Inserting paper roll
After triggering a measurement, the instrument checks whether paper is available. If no paper is inserted, the message NO PRINTER PAPER is displayed. When the red strip appears on the print-out, a new paper roll has to be inserted.

2. Press the fuse holder lock together and pull out the fuse holder. 3. Replace the old fuses with new ones. 4. Only use the specified fuses (see chapter 13 on page 28). 5. Re-insert the fuse holder.

Cleaning the instrument
1. Disconnect the instrument from the power supply. 2. Wipe the surfaces of the instrument and the hose clean using a damp cloth. 3. Dry thoroughly with a dry cloth. Do not use any cleaning agents containing alcohol! Do not allow any liquid to ingress into the hose! 14223875.eps
