Safety instructions
Classification of the safety information WARNING!
The WARNING! safety indication refers to a risk of personal injury.
CAUTION!
The CAUTION! safety indication refers to a risk of damage to property.
ATTENTION!
The ATTENTION! safety indication refers to a risk which can cause equipment to become unserviceable.
IMPORTANT!
The IMPORTANT! designation indicates application information and other particularly important information.
Knowledge of the User Manual
Art.-Nr.: 80116-443 11.03
The user manual relating to the unit forms part of this Service Manual. Familiarity with the User Manual, in particular the procedures for setting up, commissioning and handling described in the manual, is a prerequisite for the performance of servicing work.
Protection from the risk of electric shock WARNING!
The supply voltage must match the voltage specified on the rating plate. Connect the unit / the equipment cart to a properly installed grounded outlet. Only use the ERBE power cord or an equivalent power cord for this purpose. The power cord must bear the national test symbol. For safety reasons, multiple outlets and extension cords should not be used. If their use is unavoidable, they, too, must be provided with proper grounding.
WARNING!
Unplug the power cord from the outlet before exchanging parts of the unit or cleaning it.
WARNING!
Do not plug a wet power cord into the unit or into an outlet.
WARNING!
Do not touch any unprotected wires or conductive surfaces while the unit is disassembled and is under voltage.
WARNING!
The unit is protected by mains fuses. If one of these fuses blows, the unit must not be used on patients until it has been checked by a properly trained technician. Only replacement fuses of the rating specified on the unit’s name plate may be used.

2 • Device structure and function
Description of function The IES 2 is an electrical medical device which purifies the air of smoke and gas particles which result from the vaporization of human and animal tissue. This smoke typically arises during the use of laser and electrosurgical devices and generally consists of water vapor, aerosols and organic gases. The IES 2 improves the ambient conditions in the OR: • • • •
reducing the amount of dust by removing respirable particles, improving vision, removing unpleasant-smelling gases, evacuating and filtering bioaerosols.
The IES 2 extracts the smoke-laden air via a device on the surgical applied part or via a hand-held tube which is separate from the device and positioned near the applied part. The evacuated air is then purified of smoke and gas particles by means of a high-performance filter, and recirculated to the ambient air.
Art.-Nr.: 80116-443 11.03
Air purification refers to particles such as aerosols, which are captured by an ULPA high-performance particle filter, and also to organic gases, which are detected by an odor that humans find unpleasant, among other things, and which can be extracted by a special gas filter.

Basic setting The IES 2 is delivered ex works with the following basic settings: • • • • • • • • • •
Operation suction: 80 % Basic suction: 10 % Run-on time: 2 s Occlusion / system blocked (sensitivity): 5 Occlusion / system blocked (retrigger hold-time): 0 s Display brightness: 10 Sound: on (=1) Basic suction time: 30 s Setting-mode inhibit: off (=0) Basic setting inhibit: off (=0)
Resetting the IES 2 to the basic setting (RESET) The IES 2 can only be reset to the basic setting if the option "Basic setting inhibit" in the service mode is deactivated (=0).

1. When switching on the unit, press the "Operation suction" button (1) until S.0 appears in the display. 2. Press the "Activation on / off" button (4) within 5 seconds. The unit is reset to the above basic settings if: • P.1 appears in the display, • the "Basic suction" button (2) illuminates and • the display unit (6) flashes. 3. The unit is now in setting mode. In order to go into operating mode, one of the two buttons "Operation suction" (1) or "Run-on time" (3) must be pressed.

Operation suction:
The operation suction capacity can be changed at any time. To do so, press the "Operation suction" button. The value can be set between 20 % and 100 %. 100 % corresponds to a suction capacity of approx. 650 l/min. By pressing and holding the "Higher/Lower" button the values change quickly, in increments of 5. When the electrosurgical device is activated, operation suction is automatically switched on. The unit cannot be activated in the absence of a filter. Basic suction (and basic suction time):
The basic suction capacity can be changed at any time. To do so, press the "Basic suction" button. The value can be set between 0 % and 30 %.
The basic suction time can be changed in the setting mode. The value can be set to between 0 seconds (= no basic suction) and 99 seconds or to continuous (= on). The basic suction time is only active if the basic suction time is not set to 0 seconds and the basic suction value is not set to 0 %. There is no basic suction in the absence of a filter. Run-on time:
The run-on time can be changed at any time. To do so, press the "Run-on time" button. The value can be set to between 0 and 10 seconds or to continuous (= on). By pressing and holding the "Higher / Lower" button the values change quickly, in increments of 5. Flow indicator:
The flow of the three suction options (operation suction, basic suction, run-on time) is shown in the display in % or seconds.

Filter level indicator:
The "Filter exhausted" indicator: • lights up red when the filter is in the reserve range, • flashes red when the filter is exhausted or an exhausted filter has been inserted by mistake. In addition to the visual alert, three warning tones are emitted at one-second intervals. No activation occurs in the absence of a filter. If the filter is removed during operation, the unit automatically switches off. The current filter status can be checked in the setting mode: • New filter: 99 % • Filter almost exhausted: 3 % • Filter exhausted: 0 % Blocked suction detection / occlusion:
If the unit detects possible blocked suction:
Art.-Nr.: 80116-443 11.03
The indicator "System blocked / occlusion" lights up red and an acoustic signal is emitted (1 second on, 1 second off). The "Activation on / off" indicator goes out. The visual and acoustic alert lasts 5 seconds. If blocked suction is detected, the unit switches off. No basic suction occurs. Another activation (=retriggering) is only possible after the retrigger hold time. After retriggering the warning goes off. The sensitivity of the blocked suction detection and the retrigger hold time can be set in the setting mode.

Activation:
The unit can be activated in three different ways: Activation type 1
via the "Activation on / off" button
on the IES 2
The unit evacuates in operation suction mode for as long as the button is pressed. Afterwards, the unit continues to evacuate until the run-on time expires. After the run-on time, basic suction may occur, depending on the setting. No activation occurs in the absence of a filter. Activation type 2 IMPORTANT!
via ECB bus (automatic via the VIO electrosurgical unit)
The IES 2 must be connected via an ECB cable to a VIO electrosurgical unit Version 1.3.x or higher. If the smoke evacuation device and the electrosurgical unit are connected up properly, the dot on the extreme right of the IES 2 display lights up. The unit extracts in operation suction mode for as long as the electrosurgical unit is activated. Afterwards, the unit continues to extract until the run-on time expires. After the run-on time, basic suction may occur, depending on the setting. No activation occurs in the absence of a filter. via an external connection (footswitch) on the rear of the IES 2
The unit extracts in operation suction mode for as long as the footswitch is pressed. Afterwards, the unit continues to extract until the run-on time expires. After the run-on time, basic suction may occur, depending on the setting. If the run-on time is set to continuous (= on), the unit can be activated by depressing the footswitch once. Pressing the footswitch once more will switch off the unit again. No activation occurs in the absence of a filter.
