Starting a treatment Once your machine has started up you will be given two options, to start a treatment (A) or to clean the machine’s internal fluid system (B). When you are ready to start your treatment select the treatment option (A) from the screen. You are now ready to connect the bibag and acid canister. You should perform a ‘heat- disinfection’ in between every treatment, this may have been automatically done by the machine, if no heat-disinfection has been performed you must select the cleaning (B) and perform a heat-disinfection before you start your treatment.

Gather your supplies This is what you’ll need to set up your machine ready for your treatment…
1 x Bibag
1 x Acid Canister
1 x set of Blood Lines
1 x Dialyser
11
The bloodlines The bloodlines take the blood from your vascular access and pass the blood through the dialyser (artificial kidney). The bloodlines come in three sections all packaged together.
Arterial (access) section
SafeLine
Venous (return) section Rinse connector 12
Recirculation adaptor
Connecting the bibag The bibag is a clear bag containing sodium bicarbonate. Your dialysis machine uses the sodium bicarbonate to make the dialysis fluid for your treatment.
B
The bibag connects to the front of the dialysis machine (A) by lifting the bibag cover (B). The bibag attaches to two metal prongs under the cover (C), push the bibag firmly down onto the metal prongs and close the bibag cover until it clicks closed.

Connecting the acid canister
The acid canister contains electrolytes that your dialysis machine uses to make the dialysis solution for your treatment.
A B C Connect the acid canister to the dialysis machine by lifting the acid probe cover (A). Remove the red acid probe from the machine by pulling up on the probe (B). Insert the red acid probe into the acid canister and close the flap on the machine (C).
14
The T1 Test Once you have attached the bibag and the acid canister the machine will automatically perform the ‘T1 test’. The T1 test is a system check performed by the machine, during this process the machine also begins combining the acid and the bicarbonate with water from your RO unit. While the T1 test is being performed you can begin to line your machine with the bloodlines. Do not attach the SafeLine or the rinse connector to the substitution or rinse ports until the T1 test is completed.
15
Attaching the bloodlines After you have connected the bibag and the acid canister it’s time to attach the bloodlines to the machine. The preparation screen will guide you through the process of attaching the bloodlines to the machine. The preparation screen displays a picture of the front of the machine and shows you where to connect the lines as well as giving you step by step instructions. You will practice lining the machine several times with your training nurse before you go home.

Attaching the bloodlines Once you have lined the machine and the machine has completed the T1 test you must insert the safeline to the substitution port and the venous line (with the rinse connector attached) to the rinse port. To open the substitution port grasp the port cover and pull the port cover fully out towards yourself. Then twist the port cover anticlockwise until the port is exposed, now insert the SafeLine into the port. Finally turn port cover clockwise until the cover sits over the SafeLine, holding the line in place.

Repeat this process with the rinse port and the venous line/ rinse connector.

Priming the bloodlines Once you have lined the machine you need to rinse the lines to make sure there is no air left in the circuit before you start your treatment. You will see an info message on the screen to prompt you to start priming.

Recording your observations Before you start your treatment you will need to record your weight, blood pressure, pulse, and temperature. Your dialysis nurse will instruct you how to record these observations. Your dialysis machine has a built in blood pressure monitor (BPM) for recording your blood pressure and pulse.
The BPM is located on the left side of the machine. Place the blood pressure cuff around your non-fistula arm and select the Bld. press. key on the screen. The blood pressure screen will be displayed once the reading has been completed. You may be instructed to leave the blood pressure cuff on your arm throughout the treatment so you can perform more readings.
