Especially designed for use by the following personnel: • Cleaning • Infection Control • Clinical • Biomedical / Clinical Engineering
1 Pre-Cleaning
2 Disassembly
1. Gather Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), per hospital infection control policies.
7.
Adjust elevating base to comfortable cleaning position.
2. Obtain cleaning/disinfectant solution, following GE Healthcare recommendations for equipment-safe solutions.1
8.
Raise canopy midway using the canopy raise/lower switches located on the display end of the bed. This height allows you to fully reach and clean all interior and exterior surfaces. The heater doors should remain closed.
3. Move the Giraffe OmniBed to a work area where you have adequate space to completely disassemble parts and separate “dirty” parts from “clean” parts.
Intended Use: To ensure the safe and effective cleaning of this device refer to the Giraffe OmniBed Operators Manual for additional information including warnings, cautions and a list of acceptable cleaning agents. • These guidelines are not intended to replace hospital infection control policies.
Note: All parts to be cleaned should be placed in an area separate from area where clean parts are placed.

9.
Turn standby power switch off.
10. Unplug the Giraffe OmniBed from the power outlet. 11. Allow the Giraffe OmniBed to cool after patient use prior to cleaning. A 30-minute cool time is recommended.
Cleaning frequency recommendations: Cleaning frequency is impacted by several use factors. The table below offers suggested cleaning cycles for the Giraffe OmniBed based on various use scenarios: Use Condition / Description
2. Remove any accessory equipment. Unplug (if present) the in-bed scale from probe jack panel. 3. Remove porthole irises and/or porthole grommets (as applicable) and tubing management grommets.
4. Put Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) on per hospital infection control policies.
Important notes for consideration prior to cleaning: • Do not clean Giraffe OmniBed while in patient use. • Ensure that the bed is turned off for 30 minutes to allow for cooling. • Follow GE Healthcare recommendations for equipmentsafe solutions.1
Unit / Component
1. Remove any patient care equipment and linens from drawers and shelves. Consult your unit’s policy or your Infection Control department about returning items to the Giraffe OmniBed after cleaning.
4. Open the side doors by squeezing the latches located at the top corners of each door.
10. Lift the wall at the top (north) wall of the bed. It will raise about 4 cm to allow cleaning underneath the wall. 11. Remove in the following order:
5. Remove inner wall by pushing out on the tabs on the back of the door latches to release the top of the wall.
A) Mattress
B) Clear plate under mattress
C) X-ray tray
D) Scale (if present)
Every 1 week
6. Swing the outer door down so that it lies horizontally relative to the vertical inner wall. Gently pull up on inner wall.
* Cleaning the Giraffe OmniBed is recommended between each patient use ** The humidity reservoir should be disinfected weekly, and when humidity use is discontinued *** In addition, change the filter following bed use with infectious patient or when visibly dirty
2 Disassembly (Continued) 12. Center mattress tray and translation deck and lift assembly up out of the bed.
13. Separate the rotating mattress tray from the translation deck by turning it over and squeezing together the two spring latches located in the center.
16. Lift pan out of bed.
Note: To ensure proper disinfection, remove visible debris from all surfaces prior to disinfection.2
1. Place parts for soaking, such as tubing management and porthole grommets, in cleaning solution as recommended by cleaning solution manufacturer and per hospital infection control policies. 17. Remove fan. With thumb on rubber adapter, center and gently pull fan upward to release.
2. Change Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), per hospital infection control policies prior to cleaning. 3. Wipe and disinfect all removed and disassembled components as recommended by cleaning solution manufacturer and per hospital infection control policies.
18. Remove the humidifier reservoir by grasping the bottom and pulling it away from the bed. Lower it down and allow the water in the cylinder to drain back into the reservoir. Empty any remaining water from the reservoir.
5. Wipe and disinfect the humidifier reservoir and lid parts as recommended by cleaning solution manufacturer and per hospital infection control policies. Note: Humidifier reservoir may be disinfected chemically or mechanically disinfected by autoclave per Operator’s manual.
6. Wipe and disinfect component parts of bed and chassis base as recommended by cleaning solution manufacturer and per hospital infection control policies. 15. Lift the platform by pulling vertically on the central handle and depressing the spring loaded pin.
19. Inspect intake filter located behind the humidifier reservoir. Remove the screw that holds filter cover in place; then pull out the filter to inspect or replace it.
7. Wipe and disinfect the canopy/hood and canopy seal/gasket as recommended by cleaning solution manufacturer and per hospital infection control policies. Pay particular attention to both inside and outside surfaces.
1. Change Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), per hospital infection control policies prior to reassembly.
Note: While reassembling the tilt mechanism, assure that the tilt ball is engaged securely in the pocket latch.
2. For reassembly, reverse the steps outlined in the disassembly section, beginning with the fan.
3. Close canopy/hood only after completely dry; never while wet or damp.
Canopy Seal/Gasket
8.
If reusable temperature probes are used, probes may be cleaned with appropriate disinfectant applied with a soft cloth. Never submerge temperature probes or coil tightly for storage.
9.
Remove components from soaking solution.
10. Rinse all cleaned components as recommended by cleaning solution manufacturer and per hospital infection control policies. 11. Allow all parts to air-dry for 30 to 45 minutes (minimum) or as recommended by cleaning solution manufacturer and per hospital infection control policies. Note: If visible cleanliness has not been achieved, repeat cleaning or contact your Biomedical Department for further disassembly. Return product to service only after visible cleanliness has been confirmed.2
4. After assuring that the unit is completely dry, to prevent dust accumulation on the cleaned device, cover Giraffe OmniBed per hospital infection control policies. 5. Prior to use, perform pre-use checkout of bed per Operator’s Manual.
Note: Do not clean heating element/reflective dish or protective cover inside the canopy doors.
4. Separate humidifier lid from reservoir. 14. Release the tilt screw by squeezing the tilt mechanism at the north end of the bed and pushing the thumb pocket latch near the scale jack.

3 Cleaning & Disinfecting
Note: During reassembly, assure fan is tightly pressed down over centerpiece, and the adapter ring is visible. Assure that the fan spins freely prior to proceeding with reassembly.
Footnotes Chemical disinfection solutions, as well as rinsing and drying procedures for reusable medical equipment such as the Giraffe OmniBed should take place in manner determined to be consistent with your hospital’s infection control guidelines. Follow chemical disinfectant manufacturer’s instructions for solution concentration, method of surface application, and contact time to achieve disinfection. The following compounds are known to damage Giraffe OmniBed parts and thus, are not recommended for disinfectant use: Isopropyl alcohol in concentrations greater than 15%, quaternary ammonium compounds (e.g. Virex), solvents (e.g. acetone), and sodium hypochlorite (e.g. bleach) concentrations greater than 0.5% aqueous solution. See Giraffe OmniBed Operator’s Manual for further recommendations. 1
