Safety regulations
These instructions must be read and strictly complied with.
2.1
Before use
Users must familiarize themselves with the instructions in this manual before using the GS-54 sealer.
2.2 • •
•
Danger Field of application
The GS-54 sealer is to be used only for sealing sterilization packages. No liability will be accepted for use of the sealer for any other purpose. The sealer may only be used for its intended purpose, in accordance with the generally recognized rules of technology and the industrial health and safety regulations. It must not be used if it has defects that might be dangerous to employees or third parties. The sealer only may be used under supervision.
2.3
Danger of electric shock
Before the case is opened, the sealer must be disconnected from the electric power supply. To open the case, unscrew the four unmarked internal hexagon screws with a 4mm key. Only an authorized technician or a specialized dealer may undertake servicing work on the sealer.
2.4
Damage to the sealer
The sealer is not suitable for sealing PE bags. The sealer may be damaged if an unsuitable material is used.
2.5 • •
•
Contamintion of the sterilized goods
“Danger of patient infection” If the pressure of the pressure rollers is incorrectly set, the seam will not be bacteria-tight. The user must set the correct sealing temperature for each packaging material and sealer. This is done by trial sealing operations. Sealing temperatures are usually between 120° C und 180° C. Our recommendation is to set the sealing temperature to 120 °C and to raise it gradually until a bacteria-tight seam is obtained. If the temperature is too low, the seam will be incomplete and the package will therefore be weak.

User manual •
If the temperature is to high, the package will be difficult to peel open. Paper fibers may be released and contaminate the sterile goods. Released paper fibers may result in patient infection.

Installation
•
Set up the GS-54 sealer on a clean, smooth surface as follows: • • • •
• •
Position the sealer as required. Leave at least 15 cm free space behind the sealer to ensure good cooling and trouble-free operation. Plug the mains cable into the socket on the back of the sealer. Check if the voltage and frequency of the supply are 230Vac 60Hz. If the voltage and frequency of the supply are 115Vac 50Hz, replace the two 4A slow fuses inside the power switch by two 8A slow fuses. These fuses are delivered together with the sealer. Plug the mains lead into the power socket. The GS-54 sealer is now installed.
Paper guide accessories GETINGE recommends the use of a paper guide for convenient feeding and troublefree transport of the material. • • •
Install the paper guide on the sealers left side. To set the seam width, slacken the knurled nut from the paper guide. Move the paper guide to the required position and tighten the knurled nut. With the feed stop mounted fully forwards, the seam is about 15 mm away from the cut-off edge of the material; with the feed plate mounted fully backwards it is about 35 mm away from the cut-off edge.
Feeder plate accessory (Optional) GETINGE recommends the use of a feeder plate for convenient feeding and troublefree transport of the material. The feeder plate is an optional accessory for the sealer. The feeder plate is easy to mount by hanging it over the sealers front plate.

Operating instructions
The GS-54 sealer seals all sterilization packages that are normally commercially available. The sealer is not suitable for sealing PE bags. Damage to the sealer See Section 2.4, page 4.
5.1
Switching on the sealer
Set the green switch on the back of the sealer to (I). The following information appears on the display:
52°C
The sealer heats up to the programmed temperature in about 30 seconds.
The Led is shining red. When the programmed temperature has been reached the led will shine green.
Important ►
When the light is shining red the sealer is heating up or cooling down, do not feed in any material at this stage.
►
When the light is shining green the sealing temperature has been reached and the sealer is ready to seal.
5.2
Set the sealing temperature
You can change the sealing temperature with two possible keys.
5.2.1 Increasing the sealing temperature This is the procedure for setting a higher target temperature: •
Press the key.
155°C • •
•
The display looks like this
Press the key more often to increase the temperature. It’s also possible to keep the key pressed. When the key is released the temperature value in the display will start to blink for a few seconds and then the temperature is set.

User manual 5.2.2 Decreasing the sealing temperature This is the procedure for setting a lower temperature: •
Press the key.
154°C • •
•
The display looks like this
Press the key more often to decrease the temperature. It’s also possible to keep the key pressed. When the key is released the temperature in the display will start to blink for a few seconds and then the new temperature value is set.
Important ►
The maximum temperature is 200°C; the minimum temperature is 50°C. Contamination of the sterilized goods “Danger of patient infection” See Section 2.5, page 4.
Important ►
Only seal the packaging material when the green light is shining, ie. when the sealing temperature has been reached.
►
If you reduce the temperature, the green light starts to shine red (temperature too high). Wait until the temperature adjusts to the new setting and the red light turns into green light again.
►
If you raise the temperature, the green light starts to shine red (temperature too low). Wait until the temperature adjusts to the new setting and the red light turns into green light again.
5.3
Standby mode
The sealer has a standby mode. After a set time of twenty minutes, the heating elements will shut down automatically. The sealer is in standby mode. Pressing any key returns the temperature to the set sealing temperature. When the sealer is switched on the conveyor belt stats every 10 minutes for a few seconds. •
