BQ 900® BQ 900® LED

Purpose of use The BQ 900 is an AC-powered slit lamp biomicroscope intended for the use in eye examination of the anterior eye segment, from the cornea epithelium to the posterior capsule. It is used to aid in the diagnosis of diseases or trauma which affects the structural properties of the anterior eye segment.

Special instructions in text

WARNING! Only a hospital grade 3-conductor electrical power supply cable must be used. For USA and Canada: Detachable power supply cord set, UL listed, type SJE, SJT or SJO, 3-conductor, not smaller than 18 AWG. Plug, cable and ground lead connection of the socket have to be in perfect condition.

Further safety instructions are added throughout the text as required. They are classified according to importance, and designed to help avoid risk to patients and operating staff, while preventing damage to the perimeter appliance and helping to ensure that it functions safely and remains in perfect working order. FORBIDDEN! Not observing these notes will lead to material damage and the endangering of users and patients.

FORBIDDEN! Never use the ocular to look at the sun. Never operate the instrument in the same room with combustible gases, volatile solvents (alcohol, benzol) or flammable anaesthetic agents.

Transport and unpacking Before you unpack the instrument, check whether the packing shows traces of improper handling or damage. If this is the case, inform the haulier which has delivered the product to you. Unpack the instrument together with a representative of the haulier. Prepare a protocol describing parts that are possibly damaged. This must be signed by you and by the representative of the haulier. Leave instrument in the packing for several hours before unpacking (condensation). After unpacking, check if the instrument has been damaged. Return the defective equipment in an appropriate packaging. Always mount the slit lamp and the headrest on an electric insulated and fire resistant table top. The rail covers (a) prevent from a tip over of the slit lamp. Check if the connection pieces of the accessories fit tightly (like screwed connections and quick fit).

Light toxicity WARNING! Because prolonged intense light exposure can damage the retina, the use of the device for ocular examination should not be prolonged unnecessarily, and the brightness setting should not exceed what is needed to provide clear visualization of the target structures. This device is fitted with protective filters, which limit the spectrum from 400 to 750 nm, see separate Instructions for use (7001000). The retinal exposure dose for a photochemical hazard is a product of the radiance and the exposure time. If the value of radiance were reduced in half, twice the time would be needed to reach the maximum exposure limit. While no acute optical radiation hazards have been identified for slit lamps, it is recommended that the intensity of light directed into the patient’s eye be limited to the minimum level which is necessary for diagnosis. Infants, aphakes and persons with diseased eyes will be at greater risk. The risk may also be increased if the person being examined has had any exposure with the same instrument or any other ophthalmic instrument using a visible light source during the previous 24 hours. This will apply particularly if the eye has been exposed to retinal photography.

WARNING! The light emitted from this instrument is potentially hazardous. The longer the duration of exposure, the greater the risk of ocular damage. The maximum exposure time with this instrument set to the maximum intensity is related to the chosen type of illumination (Halogen/Tungsten illumination). The maximum values are specified in the separate Instructions for use (7001000).

Cleaning and disinfection Clean the slit lamp housing only with a slightly water dampened cloth. No liquids, no alcohol or corrosive agents. Clean only the exterior surfaces of the optical parts. Use chin paper and clean the forehead band with a cotton pad soaked in alcohol.

Warranty and third-party product liability

The instrument should be operated in accordance with the chapter 'Safety'. Incorrect operation can damage the instrument. Thus no warranty claims can be accepted. Continued use of an instrument that has been damaged by incorrect operation can lead to personal injury. The manufacturer cannot accept liability in this case. Repairs and alterations on this equipment should only be carried out by HAAG-STREIT service technicians or by authorized persons.

Electric and electronic equipment must be separated from house waste! This equipment has been introduced into the market after the 13th of August 2005. Disposal via your local collecting point or your HAAGSTREIT representative. Please take the old batteries to a professional disposal. Thus it is ensured, that no harmful materials get into the environment and that valuable raw materials can be used again.

Cleaning equipment For cleaning the slit lamp we recommend mild soap water or white gas. White gas is also known as: • Naphta • Coleman fuel Very common is ‘ZIPPO® lighter fluid’. FORBIDDEN! Acetone, alcohol or aggressive agents are forbidden for cleaning.

For cleaning optical components we recommend optic tissues.

Function check

Please follow the procedure below:

Make sure the slit lamp is in the correct position on the tabletop, both wheels have to be aligned horizontally (1) (2). NOTE! Make sure the base, microscope with arm and illumination tower is aligned.

The wheels are not aligned horizontally (2).

Place the special check rod (1021414) in position (3).

(3)

Check if the mirror (1001590) is clean (4). If not, remove and clean it.

Turn on the slit lamp (5).

Select magnification ‘16’ by rotating the magnification changer. The magnification changer has to move smoothly (6). If not, adjust it according chapter 6 Maintenance of the microscope with arm, p. 33. (6) Select aperture 8 by turning the control knob (3300680 cone wheel assembled) (7).

Use the compensation filter by turning the filter disc lever (3300269) (7). The movement of the filter disc and apertures disc has to be smooth, if not adjust according chapter 5.1 Upper illumination part, p. 15. Furthermore the play of the filter disc has to be the same on both end positions. If not, adjust according chapter 5.1 Upper illumination part, p. 15.

Look through the microscope and check the slit by turning the knob on the crank housing (10). The movement of the knob has to be smooth. The slit blades should not close by themselves. If the above mentioned is not good, then adjust it according chapter 5.2. Lower illumination part, p. 21.

Select a narrow slit and move the focusing rod (1001051) up and down for checking (12). The 2 slit blades have to be clean and the slit has to close completely (11). If not, then adjust it according chapter 5.1 Upper illumination part, p. 15.

Check the fixation star filter, all apertures (8 - 0.2), wedge shaped diaphragm and blue filter by turning the control knob (3300680) of the filter disc (13). Everything has to be clean. If not, clean according chapter 5.1 Upper illumination part, p. 15.

Check all filters (compensation, grey, red-free-filter) by turning the filter disc lever (3300269). It has to moves smoothly (14). If not, proceed according chapter 5.1 Upper illumination part, p. 15.

Select aperture 0.2 and open the slit completely (15).

Look through the microscope and check if the dot of the aperture 0.2 is within the 2 lines on the special check rod (1021414) (16). The tolerances are the 2 lines marked in red (17). If it’s out of tolerance, adjust according chapter 5.3.2 Adjustment (step by step), p. 31.

Check if the upper illumination device turns easily and smoothly (18). If not, proceed according chapter 5.1 Upper illumination part, p. 15.

To check the friction, move the illumination tower from left to right. The movement has to be smooth (19). If it is not smooth, proceed according chapter 5.2 Lower illumination part, p. 21.

Check the friction of the tilting function, the movement has to be smooth (20). If it is not smooth, proceed according chapter 5.2 Lower illumination part, p. 21.

Loosen the centering screw and move the illumination tower left to right. The movement has to be smooth (21). If it is not smooth, proceed according chapter 5.2 Lower illumination part, p. 21 .

Check the movement of the microscope arm, it has to move smoothly (22). If it doesn’t move smoothly, proceed according chapter 6 Maintenance of the microscope with arm, p. 33.

Check the movement of the ocular housing. The ocular has to move with some friction and not move down by itself (23). If not good, proceed according chapter 6 Maintenance of the microscope with arm, p. 33.

(23) Before the instrument base can be tested or revised, clean the gliding plate (3000205) on the instrument table with white gas. If the gliding plate is worn out, replace it with a new one. Move the base left, right, forward and backward. The movement has to be smooth and silent without play in the joystick handle (24). If not good, proceed according chapter 7 Maintenance of the base, p. 39.

NOTE! Most times the failure is due to a worn down gliding plate (3000205) and/or gliding foot (3300299). If necessary, replace it with a new one.

Move the base up and down by turning the joystick . The movement has to be smooth and silent. The slit lamp has to stop when you release the joystick (25). If not good, proceed according chapter 7 Maintenance of the base, p. 39.

Maintenance of the illumination tower

5.1

Upper illumination part

Remove the lamp housing (26).

(26) Check the contacts inside the lamp housing (3300118) (27). NOTE! Not necessary on the LED.

If they are corroded, change the lamp housing. For this HAAGSTREIT offers a ‘Lamp housing repair kit – black’ (7220200) or ‘Lamp housing repair kit – white’ (7220201). In case the lamp housing is an old one, you can upgrade it with our service package for old lamp housings (7220202). (For a detailed instruction how to install the repair kit or the service package, please see separate service news no. 003 Lamphousing.) (27)

If you don’t have a repair kit available, clean contact surfaces (with sandpaper, screwdriver etc.) of the bulb and the contact springs in the lamp housing (temporary solution).

Make sure that the ‘springed’ contact pushes tightly against the bulb contacts (28). If not, bend the springs slightly in the direction of the bulb.

NOTES! (29) 1 After replacing the light bulb, lubricate the contact points with enough contact medium. 2 Fit the lamp cover back in place. Then remove it once again and check that there is enough contact medium on the contact points. Apply more medium if needed.

Check if the condenser lens (3000231) is clean (30). If not, see below (31) (32). NOTE! Not necessary on the LED.

(30) Remove the 4 screws (1020817) and remove the isolation sleeve (1001508) (31). Cracked or damaged isolation sleeves have to be replaced. NOTE! Not necessary on the LED.

Clean the condenser lens with white gas or with mild soap and water. Use a lint free cloth (32). Reassemble the 4 screws (1020817) (31). Tighten them gently. NOTE! Not necessary on the LED.

Place the lamp housing (3300118) back in position and check if it’s secure (33). If not, bend both retaining clips outwards slightly (33). NOTE! Not necessary on the LED.

If the left/right end position is not ok, you can align it by nudging the lever to the right/left end position (34). NOTE! Don’t use too much force.

Tighten the lever with a watchmaker screwdriver (35).

Loosen the screw (3000243) and take off the upper illumination part (36).

If necessary clean the surface and grease it with grease no. 2 (36). Clean the slider as well (36).

NOTE! The next 2 steps are for LED Illumination LI 900 only (37) (38).

Remove the lamp housing on LED: 1. Loosen the screw (1000470) (37).

(37) 2. Remove the LED lamp housing (1021019) and the cover (1020889) (38).

WARNING! Only necessary if the filters, aperture or slit blades are dirty. Loosen the 4 screws (3000317) and separate the two housings (39).

NOTE! If it’s hard to separate the housing, you can knock carefully with the handle of a screwdriver (on the edge of the housing) (39). WARNING! Make sure you don’t bend or turn the push rod (39).

(39) If necessary, apply some synt-a-lube oil sparely on the push rod (40). For cleaning the slit blades, carefully slide them apart and clean the edges of the blades with a lint free cloth or use cotton swabs and white gas (40). WARNING! Make sure the 2 blades don’t smash against each other when you release them (40). (40)

Clean the filters and apertures with the special cleaning tool (0501252) or fuzz free cotton swabs (41).

If the movement of the diaphragm disc is too tight or too soft you can adjust it by bending the spring (3000306) of the stop arm (1001502) (42).

(44) Loosen the screw and disassemble the cone wheel, clean it with white gas and re-grease it with grease no. 3 (45). Reassemble the parts. Make sure the parts move slightly. (45)

WARNING! Make sure the cone wheels engage each other when you replace the cone wheel assembled.

Reassemble all parts of the upper illumination part and place it If theonto movement of the diaphragm is not smooth, remove back the lower illumination partdisc (46).
