1.4 Description of warning messages To prevent any injury to persons or damage to property, the warnings and safety notes in the instructions for use must be observed. The warning messages describe the following levels of danger. WARNING WARNING Designates a possible imminent risk. If this is not avoided, it could lead to death or serious injuries. CAUTION CAUTION Designates a possible imminent risk. If this is not avoided, it could lead to minor injuries. ATTENTION ATTENTION Designates a possibly harmful situation. If this is not avoided, the products could be damaged.

Normal use
2 Normal use 2.1 Intended use Intended use of holding system Depending on the technical design, the holding system is used for the short-term flexible fastening of KARL STORZ exoscopes, endoscopes and instruments during open, microsurgical or minimally invasive procedures. The holding system does not come into contact with the patient and is therefore non-invasive. Intended use of base The base is used for fastening holding systems to operating tables. Intended use of clamping jaw Depending on the technical design, the clamping jaw is used for the short-term fastening of rigid endoscopes, flexible endoscopes, camera heads, or instruments to holding systems during minimally invasive or open procedures. The clamping jaw does not come into contact with the patient and is therefore non-invasive. The clamping jaw is a supplementary part of a holding system.
2.2 Indications –
The holding system is indicated for holding retractor blades, hooks, nasal specula, uterus manipulators or similar instruments to retract tissue in order to create working space for the surgeon during open, microsurgical and endoscopic procedures.

The holding system is indicated for holding sheaths or working-sheaths (e.g. Lotta System) during endoscopic interventions to ensure a stable work environment.
–
The holding system is indicated for fixing laryngoscopes during surgery to ensure a stable work environment.
–
The holding system is indicated for holding exoscopes or overview cameras during microsurgical or open procedures to ensure a stable camera image and view to the site.
–
The holding system is indicated for holding mediastinoscopes to ensure a stable work environment.
–
The holding system is indicated for holding medical equipment (e.g. input devices, manmachine interfaces, electromagnetic generators for navigation systems) in place.
–
The holding system is indicated for holding patient or surgeon suspension accessory (e.g. armrests).
–
The holding system is indicated for holding working trocars or sheaths (e.g. EasyGo, TEO) during minimally invasive or microsurgical interventions to ensure a stable work environment.
–
The holding system is indicated for holding endoscopes during minimally invasive surgery or endoscopic inspection/diagnosis to ensure a stable work environment and to relieve the camera assistant.
2.3 Contraindications No contraindications relating directly to the product are currently known. Use of the instrument is contraindicated if, in the opinion of the responsible physician, the patient's health would be endangered through its use.

Normal use
The holding systems are not used in direct contact with the patient, ensuring instead the positioning stability of the corresponding applied parts. Use with the applied parts is contraindicated if use of these applied parts is contraindicated. 28272UFN only The clamping jaw is not suitable for use with endoscopic camera heads or VITOM® systems. The clamping jaw is also not suitable for use if, in the opinion of the responsible physician, the patient’s health would be endangered through its use.
2.4 Target user populations The medical device may only be used by doctors and medical assistants with a relevant specialist qualification.
2.5 Patient population There are no restrictions in terms of patient groups for this product.

Safety
3 Safety 3.1 Serious incidents According to the Medical Device Regulation (MDR), a “serious incident” includes incidents that directly or indirectly had, could have had, or could have any of the following consequences (MDR, Art. 2, No. 65 [1]): –
Death of a patient, user, or another person

Temporary or permanent serious deterioration in the medical condition of a patient, user, or another person
–
A serious threat to public health The manufacturer and appropriate authority must be notified of all serious incidents.
3.2 Unsterile product The product is not sterile when delivered. The use of non-sterile products poses a risk of infection for patients, users, and third parties. Reprocess the product in line with the reprocessing instructions before initial use and every subsequent use.
3.3 Correct handling If the product is not handled correctly, patients, users, and third parties may be injured. Only persons with the necessary medical qualification and who are acquainted with the application of the product may work with it. Check that the product is suitable for the procedure prior to use. Check the product for the following points before and after every use: –

Functionality Do not leave broken-off components inside the patient. Do not overload the product with mechanical stress. Do not bend bent products back to their original position.
3.4 Damaged products Damaged products can result in injury to patients, users, or third parties. Before each use, check all components of the product for damage. Do not use damaged products.

5 Preparation 5.1 Unpacking the product 1.
Carefully remove the product and accessories from the packaging.
2.
Check the delivery for missing items and evidence of shipping damage.
3.
In the case of damage, hidden defects, and short deliveries, document their nature and extent and contact the manufacturer or supplier immediately.
5.2 Inspecting the product 1.
Inspect products for visible contamination. Do not use contaminated products.

5.3 Assembling the product Inserting the articulated stand into the base 1.
Place the base on the rail of the operating table and fix using the rail clamp.
2.
Remove the stop screw from the articulated stand. Insert the articulated stand into the opening in the base.
3.
Screw the stop screw into the articulated stand and tighten.

4.
Set the articulated stand to the desired height and, if necessary, direction (for rotation socket 28172 HR) and fix in place using the stand clamp.
Inserting the clamping jaw into the quick release coupling 5.
Select a clamping jaw suited to the instrument.
6.
Fit the clamping jaw on the quick-release coupling. The clamping jaw must engage (audible click).
7.
Secure by turning the thumb screw in the "CLOSE" direction as far as it will go.
When assembled correctly, the pin of the quick-release coupling is no longer visible.
If necessary, the height of the articulated stand can be extended using the column extension 28172HM.

5.4 Inserting the instrument or telescope into the clamping jaw 1.
Open the instrument clamp of the clamping jaw.
2.
Insert the instrument into the clamping jaw.
3.
Secure the instrument in position using the clamping jaw fixation screw. Ensure a secure hold.
Inserting a telescope into the clamping jaw 28272UGN When using the clamping jaw 28272UGN, it is absolutely essential to ensure that the telescope is correctly clamped.
With large telescope heads (10 mm telescopes), the clamping jaw must be mounted flush with the upper edge of the telescope head

Preparation
When using rigid 10 mm telescopes, the clamping cylinder 28272CN can also be mounted on the sheath of the telescope. The telescope and clamping cylinder are fixed using the clamping jaws 28272UGK or 28272UGN.
5.5 Assembling product with KSLOCK 1.
Attach the product with KSLOCK interface (male) directly to the quick release coupling of the articulated stand. The coupling must engage (audible click).
2.
Secure by turning the thumb screw in the "CLOSE" direction as far as it will go. When assembled correctly, the pin of the quick-release coupling is no longer visible.

Disassembly
6 Disassembly 6.1 Disassembling the product 1.
Products adapted via a clamping jaw: Release instrument clamp and pull the product out of the clamping jaw.
2.
Products with KSLOCK coupling: Undo the thumb screw of the quick release coupling by turning in the "open" direction and pull the clamping jaw from the KSLOCK quick release coupling.
3.
Remove the stop screw from the articulated stand.
4.
Release the stand clamp and remove the articulated stand from the base.
5.
Release the rail clamp and remove the base from the rail of the operating table.

7 Maintenance, servicing, repairs, and disposal 7.1 Repairing the product Repair work may only be performed by KARL STORZ or by a company authorized by KARL STORZ. The interventions described in this instruction manual are exempt from this rule. Please contact your local KARL STORZ subsidiary or authorized dealer (see the list of subsidiaries). Contaminated devices may not be shipped. To prevent contact infections and airborne infections, products must first be decontaminated. KARL STORZ reserves the right to send back contaminated products.
7.2 Disposing of the product For disposal, the following measures are necessary: 1.
Decontaminate the products prior to disposal.
2.
Country-specific national laws and regulations must be observed.
