1.4 Description of warning messages To prevent any injury to persons or damage to property, the warnings and safety notes in the instructions for use must be observed. Normal use

2 Normal use 2.1 Intended use Tissue retractor, retractor, blade Retractors, tissue retractors, and spatulas are used for spreading the examination or operating field as well as holding open and holding back skin, tissue and cartilage in ENT medicine. Retractors, tissue retractors, and spatulas are designed for transient use in surgically invasive procedures and invasive procedures through a body orifice.

2.2 Indications The use of the instrument set for adenotomy, tonsillectomy/tonsillotomy, and tracheotomy is indicated if an adenotomy, tonsillectomy/tonsillotomy, and tracheotomy are indicated in the opinion of the attending physician. This includes, among other things, the diagnosis and treatment of: Adenotomy: –

Hyperplasia of adenoid tissue in the case of: – Secondary symptoms (nasal obstruction, adenoid facies, Eustachian tube dysfunction with seromucous tympanum, rhonchopathy, chronic mouth breathing, snoring, daytime sleepiness)

Recurrent upper respiratory tract infections such as: – Recurrent rhinosinusitis, meta-analysis: Adenotomy recommended as therapy of choice – Recurrent acute otitis media, recurrent chronic otitis media, and otitis media with effusion

–

Acute and subacute mastoiditis

–

Severe respiratory diseases

–

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, secondary nocturnal enuresis in OSAS

Tonsillectomy/tonsillotomy: –

Selected inflammatory (requiring antibiotics) recurrent diseases of the tonsils or peritonsillar space (recurrent tonsillitis)

–

Airway obstruction, for example, due to tonsillar hyperplasia with respiratory disorders

–

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)

–

Snoring

–

Obstructive sleep-disordered breathing (OSDB)

–

Suspicion of a malignant tumor of the palatine tonsils

–

PFAPA syndrome (periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis, and cervical adenitis)

–

Multiple antibiotic allergy syndrome

–

Relative indication: mononucleosis

2.3 Contraindications The use of the instrument set for adenoidectomy, tonsillectomy / tonsillotomy, or tracheotomy is contraindicated if, in the opinion of the responsible physician, the surgical method is contraindicated or the patient is not able to undergo endoscopic surgery or anesthesia due to his or her general condition. Instruments for adenoidectomy, tonsillectomy / tonsillotomy, or tracheotomy must not be used for procedures in direct contact with the central nervous system (CNS) and central cardiovascular system.

2.4 Patient groups There are no restrictions in terms of patient groups for this product.

2.5 Target user populations The medical device may only be used by doctors and medical assistants with a relevant specialist qualification.

Safety

3 Safety 3.1 Serious incidents According to the Medical Device Regulation (MDR), a “serious incident” includes incidents that directly or indirectly had, could have had, or could have any of the following consequences (MDR, Art. 2, No. 65 [1]): –

Death of a patient, user, or another person

Temporary or permanent serious deterioration in the medical condition of a patient, user, or another person

–

A serious threat to public health The manufacturer and appropriate authority must be notified of all serious incidents.

3.2 Damaged products Damaged products can result in injury to patients, users, or third parties. Before each use, check all components of the product for damage. Do not use damaged products.

3.3 Correct handling If the product is not handled correctly, patients, users, and third parties may be injured. Only persons with the necessary medical qualification and who are acquainted with the application of the product may work with it. Check that the product is suitable for the procedure prior to use. Check the product for the following points before and after every use: –

Correct assembly of the components

Functionality Do not leave broken-off components inside the patient. Do not overload the product with mechanical stress. Do not bend bent products back to their original position.

3.4 Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease Products that come into contact with the central nervous system can become contaminated by organic residue containing prions. Prions lead to infection with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. If Creutzfeld-Jakob disease has been diagnosed or is suspected: Dispose of the product properly and do not continue to use it.

3.5 Unsterile product The product is not sterile when delivered. The use of non-sterile products poses a risk of infection for patients, users, and third parties.

6 Maintenance, servicing, repairs, and disposal 6.1 Repairing the product Repair work may only be performed by KARL STORZ or by a company authorized by KARL STORZ. The interventions described in this instruction manual are exempt from this rule. Please contact your local KARL STORZ subsidiary or authorized dealer (see the list of subsidiaries). Contaminated devices may not be shipped. To prevent contact infections and airborne infections, products must first be decontaminated. KARL STORZ reserves the right to send back contaminated products.
