Good growth for cultures ContraCon – effective decontamination A feature found only on Heraeus incubators, ContraCon is an automatic decontamination routine that uses moist heat at 90 ºC. In independent tests, the ContraCon routine was proven to completely eliminate mycoplasma.
Consistent culture conditions exist throughout the incubator interior. This is achieved by the air jacket temperature control. In addition, the CO2 sensor ensures long term stability of the incubation atmosphere. A newly developed uppertemperature limit protection ensures exact incubation temperature even in the event of a sensor failure.
A constant surface temperature on all contamination-prone surfaces is ensured. ContraCon’s decontamination efficiency was tested by a GLP approved laboratory and CAMR, Porton Down, UK.
Contamination protection Fewer surfaces means less area for contamination. HERAcells were designed to have fewer contamination-prone surfaces than competitive models.
Cultures are protected from drying out HERAcell uses a new type of water reservoir – one that replaces the standard water tray. This new system provides a high relative humidity (rH) and most importantly, allows rapid humidity recovery times. Compared to common CO2 incubators with water trays, the HERAcell’s humidity recovery time is up to ten times faster.

DESIGN DETAILS FOR MAXIMUM PROTECTION The reduction of contamination-prone surfaces inside the chamber is the most efficient method of preventing contamination in the long term.
Completely smooth The HERAcell’s inner casing is completely smooth and has rounded corners on all sides. Instead of large shelf fittings, neat grooves provide sufficient support for the shelf system. As a result, the inner casing can be thoroughly and easily cleaned.
Less means more
Compared with common CO2 incubators, all HERAcell surfaces are accessible. Potential sources of contamination, for example plastic fans and filter casings hidden behind ceiling panels, are not present in the HERAcell.
HERAcell components have up to 50% fewer contaminationprone surfaces than common CO2 incubators incorporating large shelf supports and water trays. This means less timeconsuming cleaning and greater contamination protection.
A new type of water reservoir Standard access port Every HERAcell incubator comes with a 42 mm access port to facilitate the installation of appliances within the incubator chamber, that require pass through of electrical cords or tubing outside the incubator. 04
Thanks to the patented tilted inner chamber, the water reservoir is large enough to hold three liters. In addition, the awkward handling and cleaning of a water tray is eliminated. The heated floor underneath the water reservoir provides humidity recovery times that are up to ten times faster than comparable water tray incubators.
Designed for ease-of-use The HERAcell interior including the fan and its cover are made of stainless steel or copper. For improved contamination protection, the use of plastics in the interior is reduced to a minimum. Doors can be set up for left or right handed usage to optimize your work space. All door gaskets can be removed by hand. They have smooth surfaces for easy cleaning.
Easy-to-view controls Two large illuminated displays make parameter control simple. You can simultaneously check and monitor the temperature and the CO2 levels at a glance.
Practical operation The pull-out tray underneath the incubator provides space for storage of supplies and operating instructions, as well as a place for keeping your research notes. It also serves as a convenient shelf during loading and unloading.
For long term incubation HERAcell 240 offers an additional High-Low Humidity Function to reduce the interior humidity from ≥ 95 % rH to 90 % rH.

The ContraCon automatic decontamination routine consistently achieves excellent decontamination at a moist heat of 90 ºC.
The incubator’s high relative humidity and short recovery times prevent the culture media from evaporating.
Compared with other CO2 incubators, HERAcell has up to 2.5 m2 (27 sq ft) less contamination-prone surfaces.
In less than a day, the HERAcell’s entire interior, including all sensors, shelves, fan and the critical water reservoir, are decontaminated. We save you time by not requiring the removal, refitting or separate decontamination of sensors. There is no limit to the number of times that ContraCon can be used for decontamination.

With water tray incubators, a layer of air between the incubator and tray, slows down the humidity recovery, resulting in high culture media evaporation rates. HERAcell has a heated floor which allows for direct heat transfer to the humidification water.
The unique upper temperature limit protection system not only warns of overheating, but it also maintains the set incubation temperature. The inner glass door of competitive CO2 incubators can accidentally be left open while the outer door is closed. All Heraeus CO2 incubator glass doors have a safety catch which reliably prevents this from happening. Stable culture conditions are ensured and protection is provided against contamination penetration.

HERAtrays
Support frames
HERAtrays are shelves for the convenient transportation of your cultures. Each incubator shelf can be divided into 4 sections with these trays, They work well with a 3 or 6 door screen.
Support frames are available to provide protection against floor contamination. Choose between a height of 200 mm (8 inches) or 780 mm (31 inches). IR-CO2 gas tester The support frames can also The handheld IR-CO2 gas be castor-mounted, allowing easy transport of the HERAcell. tester is equipped with a maintenance-free infra-red cell to monitor the CO2 concentration. Data download and calibration functions are possible by using optional PM-COM software. The IR-CO2 gas tester performs according to GMP/GLP guidelines.
HERAtrays are available in stainless steel and copper.
3 door/6 door screen HERAcell can be equipped with a 3 or 6 door screen. The screen allows access to defined sections of the incubator without disturbing the inner atmosphere. This minimizes recovery times and contamination risks. The 6 door screen (available for HERAcell 240 only) is gas tight.

Two New Standard Features ● The basic model now includes the patented, auto-zero self-balancing CO2 control system ensuring long-term stability of CO2 levels, thereby stabilizing pH values in your culture media. ● Each HERAcell® 240 is equipped with a new water-level alarm to remind you to refill the water reservoir before it can run dry. This ensures high humidity levels preventing evaporation of the culture media. The sensor is decontaminated during the 90 °C ContraCon routine.
Quality Products – Lifetime Care
Unique O2 Control with Auto-Cal HERAcell® 240 now offers two optional O2 control ranges. Choose between 1 to 21 % O2 for applications requiring hypoxic conditions or a wide range from 5 to 90 % O2. The maintenance free zirconium sensor is automatically calibrated by the integrated auto-cal system, ensuring long-term stability of O2 concentration. The sensor is decontaminated during the 90 °C ContraCon routine. Unique New IR CO2 Sensor with Auto-Zero With the new HERAcell® 240 you have the choice between the well-established TC or the unique new IR CO2 sensor. Both with auto-zero, ensuring long-term stability and
thereby more constant pH values for good growth conditions. Both sensors remain in the incubator during the 90 °C ContraCon decontamination routine, eliminating the necessity of manual cleaning as with conventional IR sensors, thus saving time and reducing the risk of contamination. Unique New Roller Bottle System HERAcell® 240 can be equipped with up to 4 bottle turning devices for roller bottles between 58 to 186 mm in diameter. The rotational speed of each device is set independently. This unique system remains in the incubator during the 90 °C ContraCon decontamination routine, eliminating time consuming manual cleaning.

CONTAMINATION PREVENTION – SAFETY THROUGH DESIGN The reduction of contamination-prone surfaces inside the chamber is the most efficient method of preventing contamination in the long term.
Reduced internal surface areas The consequent reduction of the total surface area and especially minimizing inaccessible corners, cavities, tubing and pipes simplifies cleaning. HERAcell® has up to 2.5 m2 less contaminable surface area than other CO2 incubators. This corresponds to about the area of a door. Without hidden and inaccessible surfaces formation of hidden contamination is greatly reduced.
Completely thought out In contrast to other CO2 incubators, all HERAcell® surfaces are easily accessible. Potential sources of contamination, for example plastic fans and filter casings hidden behind ceiling panels, are not used in the HERAcell®.
Less means more HERAcell® components have up to 50 % fewer contamination-prone surfaces. This means less timeconsuming cleaning and greater contamination protection.

Other CO2 incubators
The easy snap in shelf mounting system uses no screws, bolts or other potential contamination traps in the interior space.
Access port HERAcell® incubators are supplied with a 42 mm (1.6 in) access port as standard. This allows cables, plugs and tubing to be easily inserted into the chamber.
High-Low Humidity function For long term incubation HERAcell® offers an additional High-Low Humidity function providing humidity levels of ≥ 95 % rH or ~ 90 % rH.
Convenient operation The pull-out tray underneath the incubator provides space for storage of supplies and operating instructions, as well as a place for research notes. It also serves as a convenient shelf during loading and unloading.
Newly developed water-level alarm This feature provides an audible and visual alarm when the water reservoir needs to be refilled to ensure a constant high level of humidity and to prevent cultures from drying out. The sensor is decontaminated during the 90 °C ContraCon decontamination routine.

Solid copper interior Solid copper is well known to prevent effectively contamination growth on its surface. The HERAcell® is available with a solid copper interior (chamber, complete shelfing system and fan) offering a perfect continuous contamination control.
Novel water reservoir The inner casing sloping down towards the back creates a water reservoir. This avoids inconvenient handling and cleaning of a water basin and eliminates potential contamination area.

Safety in detail All Heraeus® CO2 incubator glass doors have a safety catch which reliably prevents the inner door from mistakenly being left open. Stable culture conditions are ensured and protection is provided against contamination penetration.

Humidity The novel water-level alarm continuously monitors the water level and provides an early warning if the water reservoir has to be refilled. Gassing The optional gas guard for CO2 and O2/N2 permits 2 respective gas supplies to be connected. As soon as the first supply is empty the controller switches automatically to the second supply and sounds an alarm.

Reliable decontamination with ContraCon The ContraCon automatic decontamination routine consistently achieves excellent decontamination at a moist heat of 90 ºC. In less than a day, the HERAcell’s® entire interior, including all sensors, shelves, fan and the critical water reservoir, are decontaminated. You save time by not having to remove, refit or separately decontaminate any fixtures. There is no limit to the number of times that ContraCon can be used for decontamination. A homogenous heat distribution on all surfaces is important for effective decontamination.
Protected from drying out Especially when the door is opened frequently or when low media volumes are used, short recovery times become very important. The HERAcell® incubators inclined/rounded cornered water reservoir provides a large water surface and a direct heat transfer from the heated floor to the humidification water. With water tray incubators, a layer of air between the incubator and tray, slows down the humidity recovery, resulting in high culture media evaporation rates. Together with the patented, additional floor heating after door opening and during O2 gassing, the HERAcell® achieves humidity recovery times up to five times faster than competitive models.
Gas tight inner glas door All HERAcell® incubators now offer an optional 3 door (HERAcell® 150) or 6 door ( (HERAcell® 240) inner glas door. Inner doors allow access to defined sections of the incubator without disturbing the inner atmosphere. This minimizes recovery times and contamination risks.

Furthermore, “normal cleaning“ is sufficient, as decontamination is done automatically in the incubator – autoclaving is no longer necessary. The fully automatic auto-start routine renders the incubator operational within a few hours. Water-jacket incubators require in excess of a day for start-up because the water requires heating.
