1A Quick-Start Guide to Using Data Messenger This brief section is a fast, friendly way to get started using the HeartStart Data Messenger 4.0 (Data Messenger) software. This section is intended to introduce you to some of the most common tasks. Also, online help is always available. This section includes the following topics: • Overview on page 3 • Typical Uses on page 5
Overview You can use Data Messenger many different ways depending on how you configure Data Messenger. For information on how to implement Data Messenger, see the Data Management Implementaton Guide. The primary use for Data Messenger is as a data transfer tool to move patient data from an AED or ALS monitor/defibrillator to a remote destination for retrospective quality review. Data Messenger supports the following Philips defibrillators: •
HeartStart MRx Monitor/Defibrillator (HeartStart MRx)
•
HeartStart FRx Defibrillator (FRx)
•
HeartStart FR2 Defibrillator (FR2)
•
HeartStart HS1 Defibrillator (HS1)
•
XL, XLT, and 4000 defibrillators
You can use Data Messenger to receive, forward, monitor, and manage the transfer of patient case data from the defibrillator to a variety of destinations. The destinations can include HeartStart Event Review Pro (Event Review Pro), HeartStart Telemedicine System (HeartStart Telemedicine), a shared network folder, a printer, and an email address. When you receive case data from a defibrillator, the defibrillator must be in the Administration mode. You can also use Data Messenger for local printing and saving cases, or delivering 12-lead ECG (12lead) reports to the hospital prior to the patient arrival. Data Messenger can operate as an on-screen application or in the background. In the on-screen application, Data Messenger can operate in two modes: Automatic and Manual Process.
3
1 A Quick-Start Guide to Using Data Messenger
Overview
•
In Automatic mode, you see status messages as Data Messenger processes patient data automatically. Data Messenger operates in the background. Data Messenger receives patient cases, event summaries, 12-lead reports, and periodic clinical data transmissions (PCDT). Data Messenger then forwards the patient data to destinations. You do not use the Data Messenger windows.
•
In Manual Process mode, you handle each patient case and interact with Data Messenger application windows. For example, if you download data from an AED, you open Data Messenger from the Windows Start menu and use the software directly.
Data Messenger is available in a desktop and a mobile edition.
Desktop Edition Data Messenger Desktop Edition is available for use on a personal computer, laptop, or Tablet PC. The desktop edition is available with the full-product and limited-features versions. Full-product version The full-product version of Data Messenger provides two windows: Data Messenger Configuration window and Data Messenger Manual Process window.
You can use the Data Messenger Configuration window to configure additional information to add to the patient cases, to operate Data Messenger in Automatic mode, and to configure the destinations that receive the patient data. For more information, see Configuring Data Messenger on page 5. You can use the Data Messenger Manual Process window to monitor the transfer of patient data and Data Messenger system activity. The Data Messenger Manual Process window includes two tabs: Cases and System Log. You can also process cases manually from this window. A case is all the information relating to a specific cardiac emergency. This includes information recorded by supported defibrillators as well as information entered by a user. For more information, see Monitoring the Transfer of Case Data on page 6 and Monitoring System Activities on page 6. Limited-features version You can use the limited-features version of Data Messenger to do the following tasks. You cannot save or forward patient cases to other destinations. •
View system log messages
•
Print and view the ECG Full Disclosure Report for the selected case
•
Delete patient cases from the defibrillator
Mobile Edition The Data Messenger mobile edition is available in the full-product version. The mobile edition operates on handheld devices, which are more portable and less expensive than desktop, laptop, and tablet computers. The mobile edition is for use on a Pocket PC or Smart Phone equipped with Bluetooth, infrared, or data card access. The mobile edition displays the status messages as Data Messenger processes the data transfer. You can use the mobile edition to monitor the processing of patient data between the defibrillators and the destinations.

Typical Uses
1 A Quick-Start Guide to Using Data Messenger
Typical Uses Users in different healthcare situations use Data Messenger in a number of different ways, based on their unique workflows and existing infrastructure. For example: •
One fire department might use Data Messenger to operate on their station house computer. The fire department might download and print cases manually.
•
Another fire department might operate Data Messenger in the background while the cases download in batches cross the local area network (LAN). Data Messenger forwards the cases to destinations at the end of the shift.
•
Another EMS agency might operate Data Messenger on the electronic patient care reporting (ePCR) Tablet PC in the back of an ambulance. The EMS personnel forward 12-lead reports to a receiving hospital through the Internet. The patient information arrives to the hospital before the patient arrives.
•
Another organization might use Data Messenger to forward patient cases to a shared network drive where the data can be incorporated in a web-based ePCR application.
Typical uses include the following tasks: • Configuring Data Messenger on page 5 • Monitoring the Transfer of Case Data on page 6 • Reviewing and Printing Cases on page 6 • Monitoring System Activities on page 6 • Using the Data Messenger Mobile Edition on page 6 • Using the Limited-Features Version of Data Messenger on page 7 Regardless of how each organization uses Data Messenger, an IT or equipment manager sets up and configures Data Messenger. Medical personnel then use Data Messenger in Automatic or Manual Process mode during operations.
Configuring Data Messenger Configuring Data Messenger involves completing the following tabs on the Data Messenger Configuration window: •

Inboxes tab – Use the Inboxes tab, if you want to Data Messenger to monitor an inbox automatically. Enter the location where Data Messenger receives the patient data.
•
Workflow tab – Select each action that you want Data Messenger to complete.
•
Forward tab – Use the Forward tab, if you want to forward a file to another location automatically. Specify the location that Data Messenger uses to forward the data. You can specify how often Data Messenger tries to forward the data.
•
Print tab – Use the Print tab if you want to print a case report automatically. Select the type of report that Data Messenger prints or sends as an email attachment.

Monitoring System Activities Use the System Log tab if you question whether Data Messenger is working. The System Log tab is on the Data Messenger Manual Process window. Use the System Log tab to monitor Data Messenger system activity on the desktop edition. The system log includes a description of each action that Data Messenger completes. You can customize how Data Messenger displays the information. For example, you can do the following to customize your view: • Specify the columns that appear • Sort information in ascending or descending order • Group system activity based on a column For more information, see Working with the System Log on page 49.
