Viking S Instruction Guide English 7EN138102-02 2007-10-19 Applies to the following models: Viking S
Prod. No. 2040006
Product Description Viking S is an easily manoeuvred mobile lift that is perfect for use in settings where space is limited. Viking S has electrical raising and lowering of the lift arm as well as mechanical base-width adjustment. Viking S is appropriate for all common lifting situations; e.g., transfers between bed and wheelchair, to and from the toilet and bathtub or for lifting to and from the floor. Viking S has three alternative height adjustment positions that ensure the optimal lifting interval in every
situation. The middle position is the standard position; the lowest is ideal, e.g., for lifting children to and from the floor. The highest position is selected for extra lifting height, for example, when lifting to beds and gurneys that are not height-adjustable. For optimal function and safety, it is essential that the lift and any accessories you intend to use be individually tested.
In this document, the person being lifted is referred to as the “patient” and the person helping them is referred to as the “caregiver”. “Caution!” triangles are used to warn of situations that demand extra care and attention. CAUTION! Carefully read instructions for the lift and lifting accessories before use. Lifting and transferring a person always presents a potential risk. A thorough understanding of the contents of this instruction guide is essential. Only trained personnel should use the equipment. If you have questions, please contact Liko or your local Liko representative.

Assembly Before assembly, make sure you have the following: • Lift mast and lift arm, motor for lift arm, slingbar and control unit • Base • Handcontrol with cable
• Locking handles (1 pair) • Bag containing Instruction Guide and Quick Reference Guide • Battery charger
1. Lock both rear wheels. Place the lift mast in the socket on the base.
2. Lifting height can be set at three different levels. Choose one of the three holes, as in the illustration above. The middle hole is recommended in most cases. The lower hole is recommended when extra high lifting height is desired, and the upper hole is recommended for lifting at a lower level. Holes are placed at 50 mm (2 inch) intervals. See table on page 4.
3. Using the accompanying locking handles, secure the lift mast in the desired position in the base. Adjust the handles so that they point downward.
4. Connect cables as follows: - Cable handcontrol to outlet 1 - Cable motor for lift arm to outlet 2

Operation Operation Viking S is operated by pressing the buttons on the handcontrol. For raising and lowering the lift arm: press and , respectively. Lifting motion stops as soon as the push-button is released. If the battery needs charging, a lamp (A) is lit on the handcontrol. There is, however, enough power left in the battery for a few more lifts.
Base-width adjustment The base width can be increased and decreased mechanically by pressing the foot pedal. Press the right side to widen the base and press the left side to make the base narrower.
Electrical emergency lowering The lift arm is lowered electrically by pressing “down” ( control unit.
) on the
Mechanical emergency lowering Mechanical emergency lowering is performed by turning the red emergency lowering cylinder in the direction of the arrows.
Emergency stop For emergency stop: Press the red Emergency stop button. To release/reset: Turn the button in the direction of the arrows.
Locking the wheels Press down the locking lever on the wheel. The wheel locks for rotation and turning. In most lifting situations, the wheels should not be locked. We recommend that wheels be locked only when there is a risk for personal injury if the lift should start to roll, e.g., when lifting a person from a horizontal position on the floor. Release the lock by pressing the lever up. Locked wheels during lifting increases the risk of the lift tilting over. Never pull the lift by the actuator! This may result in damage to the lift and possible injury.

Charging the Batteries
A display on the control unit shows current battery capacity. When the handcontrol is activated, a diode/lamp indicating battery capacity lights up for 10 seconds. A Green: min. 50% B Yellow: 25-50% C Yellow: 0-25% D The lamp indicates that charging/maintenance charging is in progress. This lamp is always illuminated when the charger is connected.
A B C D
When the yellow lamp (C) lights and the power of the battery has become too low, the lift will automatically shut off, this in order to protect the battery from being completely discharged. The lift then has to be charged before it can be used again. To ensure maximum battery life, batteries must be charged regularly. We recommend charging after the lift has been used, or each night. If the lift is not in daily use, we recommend that the Emergency Stop button be pushed in after use to break the current and save battery power. NOTE! Do not charge batteries in a wet area!
Maximum charge is reached after about 12 hours. When the batteries are fully charged, the charger switches automatically to maintenance charging. To check battery condition, activate the handcontrol after maximum charging and read the control unit display. The green lamp indicates good battery condition. If either of the yellow lamps is illuminated, batteries should be replaced.
Charging Procedure
With external charger: 1. Connect charger cable to outlet for charger, under the control unit. 2. Connect charger to power supply (100-230 VAC).

NOTE! The lift must not be used while connected to the battery charger!
Old batteries are to be left at the nearest recycling station or given to personnel authorized by Liko.

Maximum Load Different maximum allowable loads may apply to different products on the assembled lift system: lift, slingbar, sling and other accessories. For the total lift system, the lowest max. allowable load indicated for the respective products on the system always applies. For example: A Viking S that is approved for 160 kg (350 lbs.) may be equipped with a slingbar that is approved for 300 kg (660 lbs.). In this case, the applicable max. load is 160 kg (350 lbs.) for the total lift system. Study markings on the lift and lifting accessories or contact your Liko representative if you have any questions.
Recommended Lifting Accessories Slingbars and accessories recommended for use with the Viking series of mobile lifts are described below. Changing slingbars and adding extra accessories affects the maximum lifting height of the lift. Before changing slingbars and accessories, it is important to ensure that it will still be possible to achieve the desired lifting height for situations in which the lift will be used. For choice of appropriate slings and other lifting accessories, see e.g., the brochure ”Lifting accessories”. For further guidance on choosing a sling, consult the instruction guide for the respective sling model. Here, you will find advice on suitable combinations of Liko slingbars and Liko slings. Contact your Liko representative or visit www.liko.com for advice and information on Liko’s product range.

Care and Maintenance For safe and trouble-free operation, a few routine procedures should be performed every day the lift is used: • Visually inspect the patient lift and check for external damage or wear. • Check that all screws and lock nuts on the slingbar are tight. • Check that the safety latches on the slingbar work properly. • Check the handcontrol and the lift and width movements. • Check the emergency lowering function (both electrical and mechanical). • Charge the battery every day the lift is used, and check charger function. When necessary, clean the lift with a moist cloth, using common surface cleaners or disinfectants and check to ensure that the wheels are free of dirt and hair. NOTE! Do not use cleaning agents that contain phenol or chlorine, since these can damage aluminium and polyamide material. The lift should not be exposed to running water. Transportation and storage During transportation, or when the patient lift is not to be used for some time, the emergency stop button should be pushed in. The environment where the patient lift is transported and stored should have a temperature between 10˚C and 40˚C and a humidity between 30% and 75%. The air pressure should be between 700 and 1060 hPa. Inspection Viking S must be inspected at least once per year. Pay particular attention to parts that are subject to wear. Inspection must be performed according to the Liko service manual and by authorized personnel.
