BIOCON-700 BLADDER SCANNER TRAINING COMPETENCY FACT AND GUIDANCE SHEET INTENDED FOR CASCADE TRAINERS The BioCon-700 is a battery operated, fully automatic bladder scanner for determining bladder volume on both adults and children. Purpose: A bladder scanner should be used to: • • • •
Determine a person’s bladder volume Pre and post-operative scan to monitor any complications following surgery Accurately assess post voiding residual volume Reduce unnecessary urinary catheterisations
Contraindications: • Foetal use or on pregnant patients • Patients with Ascites • Patients with open wounds or damaged skin in the suprapubic region PROBE CARE Care should be taken with the probe at all times. When not in use, the probe should be docked in the carry case or the holder labelled Probe located on the manufacturer’s trolley which is specifically designed to house the probe securely - probe cable pointing to the floor. Do not leave the probe on a flat surface as it may roll off and get damaged TROLLEY/CARRY CASE It is recommended that the BioCon-700 is protected by mounting it on the manufacturer’s mobile trolley (for ward use) or in the manufacturer’s carry case (for mobile applications – e.g. community use). These options provide protection for both the probe and scanner and a convenient method of moving the scanner from one location to another. The scanner trolley has a tilt mount to allow optimal positioning.
When positioning the trolley or adjusting the angle of the tilt mount, do not use the handle of the scanner which may cause damage. The scanner trolley has its own handle for positioning.

THE SCANNER
Newer models of the BioCon-700 have extra functions. If available, these can be accessed by selecting appropriate icon (when present) on the bottom left of the home screen. The INFORMATION icon provides access to the on-board quick start guide The MISSING Scan Data icon appears when a previously unsaved scan result is temporarily stored in memory and available by selecting icon. Any unsaved scan results will be lost when the scanner is powered off. The CALIBRATION Reminder icon appears one year after the last calibration

SD memory card o 2GB – 700 readings capacity o 4 GB – 1400 readings capacity o Some versions of the BioCon-700 have the capacity to store up to 40 readings on an internal memory. You may find a label has been placed over SD card/slot for protection. This can be removed if you intend to use the SD card for saving images. The BioCon-700 displays readings up to 999ml. Greater readings will be shown as 999+ml
ACCURACY • • •
+/- 15% (100 – 999ml i.e. 300ml = +/- 45ml) or +/- 15ml (0 – 100ml i.e. 50ml = +/- 15ml)
BATTERY FUNCTION The battery is integral and charged whilst in place in the scanner. There is no need to remove or have a spare battery. For battery capacity, please refer to your user manual. On screen battery status indicator: Indicates battery is fully charged Indicates battery is about 70% charged Indicates battery 30% charged Indicates a fully discharged battery. Charge the battery immediately Indicates the external power adaptor is connected Charging the battery For optimal battery management, it is recommended that the scanner is placed on charge when the battery level indicator is on one bar (30%). The scanner may be charged overnight and should be removed from charge when the battery is full. A fully discharged battery will take 6 hours to fully charge.

TAKING A READING Follow trust guideline on patient preparation and consent. Prior to use, inspect the scanner, probe and probe cable for signs of damage. Do not use if damaged and report immediately to engineering. If not available to your organisation, report to de Smit Medical head office 0845 3454226 It is recommended that prior to use, excess ultrasound gel should be removed from the probe using a clean paper towel. Wipe the probe using detergent wipes following manufacturers’ guidance and trust recommendations. Switch the scanner on by pressing the power button (older models – press and hold until the screen lights up). Select the correct patient type:
For female patients who have had a hysterectomy, please select Male. Children are patients less than 120cm tall & weighing less than 25Kg. For female patients who have had a hysterectomy, please select Male. Children are patients less than 120cm tall & weighing less than 25Kg. Apply ultrasound gel directly to the patient – midline on the patient’s abdomen approximately 3 cm above the symphysis pubis (pubic bone).
FOR BEST RESULTS, USE ONLY A RECOGNISED ULTRASOUND TRANSMISSION GEL Position the probe with the SCAN KEY ON THE PATIENTS RIGHT HAND SIDE with the head on the patient icon pointing towards the patient’s head pressing slightly into the abdomen. Place the probe on the midline on the patient’s abdomen approximately 3 cm above the symphysis pubis (pubic bone) pointing towards the base of the spine. Press any scan key once to display a live pre-scan image to locate the best view of the bladder. Using the pre-scan image, adjust the location, angle and pressure of the probe until you find the largest image of the bladder possible with the green vertical line centralised. On certain models of the BioCon-700, during the Pre-Scan phase, the scanner will highlight the presence of fluid indicating the likelihood that the bladder has been located with a pink cross (see image below). It is not essential to align this marker with the green centre line as it is only an indicator. NB. It is not 100% guaranteed that the bladder indicator shows the bladder in all cases,

Once satisfied, hold the probe still maintaining position and pressure and press any scan key again to obtain a reading. Reading will take approximately 4 seconds.

On certain models of the BioCon-700, when in the child setting, the scanning depth is highlighted during the Pre-Scan with an orange marker to help confirm the entire bladder is captured. If the bladder encroaches beyond the child scan depth marker, select exit and scan again having selected the appropriate adult patient setting. When in child mode, the scan depth marker will be displayed on the results screen (see image below). Child scan depth marker

CONFIRMATION OF VALID READING •

The scanned area outline matches the bladder image in both horizontal and vertical views. NB: for larger volumes, ensure the outer edge of the bladder is visible to ensure that no section of the bladder has been missed. The image area measurements of both views are within 10cm2 of each other. The bladder position confirmation is within the target area (centralised).
IF ANY OF THE ABOVE ARE NOT ACHIEVED, A REPEAT READING IS RECOMMENDED ENTERING A PATIENT ID A patient ID can only be entered once the scan result has been obtained. Select the grey field next to Tag: (ID: on older models). Enter details and select OK (maximum 10 characters). An ID will not be retained once the NEW PATIENT option has been selected or the scanner has been powered off.
PRINTING/SAVING To print or save a result, select print or save option on the results screen. NB: The max. volume scan and results only will be printed or saved.

CHANGING THE PRINTER PAPER The BioCon-700 utilises a thermal printer and requires no ink. As the printer paper nears the end of the roll, a pink line will appear.
Open the printer housing door by lifting the adjacent grey lever and discard the unwanted remnants of the spent roll.
With the new printer paper roll in one hand, unroll a small length of and insert into the unit ensuring that the paper feeds from the top (back) of the roll.
Leaving a small amount of paper exposed, close the printer housing door until it clicks shut.
If after changing the paper the printer doesn’t print, check that the new paper roll has been inserted correctly.
