Open sterile tubing
Insert tubing into Thopaz ensuring tubing end does not bend and that it is tight against Thopaz.
Ensure that sealing ring is in place on side of Thopaz.

Switch Thopaz on. Ensure tubing is not connected to patient yet.
Choose if the treatment is for a new patient.
Switch on pressure.

Check Thopaz is running. The flow rate should rise.
Cover patient end of tubing using your thumb.
Flow rate should decrease. If not, ensure canister is clicked in, tubing is tight against Thopaz and sealing ring is in place.
Battery Low Internal Error
Canister/ Tubing Set Up Functional Test Set Up
Press standby button for 3 seconds. Thopaz will go into standby mode.
Connect Thopaz tubing to patient chest tubing according to local hospital guidelines.

The alarm will beep and a description will appear on screen. Thopaz will automatically go into standby mode.
To silence alarm press both up/down arrows simultaneously and follow on screen instructions.
Access Patency Check
Clamp tubing as close to Thopaz as possible to prevent fluid leakage or follow prevailing hospital protocol if different than recommened here.

Ensure the sealing ring is still in place.
Release clamp and continue treatment by pressing on button.
Standby Alarm Battery Low Internal Error
Problem: There is a disconnection of the tubing, the canister may not be clicked in properly, the o ring is missing between Thopaz and canister or patient is experiencing unusually large airleak
☛ To silence alarm press both up/ down arrows simultaneously and follow on screen instructions. Hold down standby button until standby mode is enabled.

Silence Alarm
Clamp Thopaz tubing as well as the patient catheter tube.

Check that Thopaz tubing is tight at the patient end.
Press blue button to release canister.
Ensure the sealing ring is still in place.

Remove and reinsert tubing into Thopaz ensuring that the tubing end does not bend and that it is tight against Thopaz.
System Clogged
– Reattach canister – Release clamp on tubing – Continue treatment by pressing on button
Standby Alarm
If problem persists replace tubing and canister.
Battery Low Internal Error
Problem: Tubing is kinked or clogged or the filter in canister is clogged

To silence alarm press both up/down arrows simultaneously and follow on screen instructions. Hold down standby button until standby mode is enabled.

Is there an obvious kink or clot in the Thopaz tubing?
Canister/ Tubing Set Up
YES – Remove kink, Thopaz will resume treatment NO
– Clamp tubing next to canister and clamp patient catheter tube – Hold down standby for 3 seconds – Remove canister and dispose – Remove tubing and dispose – Insert new tubing – Check for sealing ring – Connect new canister – Release both tubing clamps – Continue treatment with on button

Problem: Thopaz left in standby mode for 5 minutes

Thopaz will ask you if you want to turn the power off or resume treatment. Select “on” or power off.

Functional Test Set Up
Thopaz will instruct you to power off. Press power button once quickly.
– Keep patient therapy number by selecting “No” when Thopaz asks “new patient?” – Continue treatment with on button. If internal error alarm sounds again, turn off Thopaz and use replacement Thopaz. Label Thopaz faulty and report incident to Medela Account Manager.
