Therapy issues Please use the THERA-fit only for patients being able to walk (even crutching or with walking aids) without strong paralysation or spasm.
The goal of the therapy is closely related to the specific disease of the patient and can be to obtain mobility on one hand, on the other hand the rehabilitation after surgery or injury, which means getting back mobility and capacity for work. Independent patients can be instructed how to use the THERA-fit, however a training must be set up by a therapist and the exercises must be supervised. Start the training slowly and increase to your individual maximum potential. Take care that the patient’s capacity does not get topped.
Correct position of body
❑ Walking and moving disabilities ❑ General moving need ❑ Multiple sclerosis ❑ Rheuma ❑ Heart and circulation problems ❑ Arthrose/ Arthritis ❑ Parkinsons' disease ❑ Paraplegic ❑ Apoplectic fit ❑ Dialysis ❑ Muscle atrophy
THERA-joy can be fixed to the frame of a bed or a couch. So it can be used as a feet trainer while lying in bed, without the patient lying on a gymnastics mat. THERA-fit is intended especially at:
Ways of use
Always make sure the patient’s position is in accordance with the goal of the therapy while working with THERA-fit. Start the training program by chosing small distances between the device and the patient, in order to make sure there will not be any overstretching of the joints or damage in the muscle-/tenon area. The bigger the distance between device and patient, the more the hip and shoulder joints will be stretched.
General information
THERA-fit can be used as a feet-trainer and as a upper limp trainer: ❑ Using THERA-fit as a feet-trainer the patient sits on a chair or in a wheel-chair or he is lying on a gymnastics mat. The footrests 1 are fixed to the pedals. THERA-fit stands on the ground in front of the patient. ❑ Using as a upper limp trainer the device stands in front of the patient on a table. The therapy grips 6 are fixed to the pedals and maybe the arm rests 11 are fixed too.
23
Make sure when using foot-rests 1 that your feet are fixed exactly with the belts (cf. Chapter “Foot-Rests”, page 25).
Planning the training
Usually the doctor or therapist plans or recommends how often and for how long the patient should exercise on an individual basis. Regular training with THERA-fit is extremely important for any improvement process. Short but regular use is better than long ones that are exhausting. So start with a maximum of 510 minutes training in a row-if your physical mobility allows you to do so. Choose a small capacity level. You can increase the training time, speed and power in small steps and day by day, whereas the patient’s capacity level never must be overcharged. The therapy will be most successful if there will be no exhausting state of any kind, the patient feels at ease during the whole time and strength and mobility slowly increase.
Active and Passive Training When training actively the patient is working against the adjustable resistance of the device by using his own physical strength, he must operate with his own energy by doing so (Motor resistance/Brake resistance Page 26). Training passively means letting the patient work without him having to use his own physical power, only by using the device. The needed energy is being provided by the device. THERA-fit has no motor and can only be used for active training. THERA-fit plus and THERA-joy have a motor. You can train with these devices actively and passively.
Before first Use

The transmitter of the infrared remote control is behind the red covering disc of the remote control 8. The receiver is behind the black covering 9 of the device. ❑ Never press the covering of the receiver 9. ❑ Make sure that the transmitter of the remote control 8 always shows towards the receiver 9. Is this not the case the device will automatically stop. ON/OFF By pressing the On/Off button you switch on or off the remote control 8. The lightning diodes on the remote control 8 show you afterwards the preset operating state: ❑ Direction of rotation = forward ❑ Number of revolutions = 0 revolutions/min ❑ Motor power = maximum (ca. 15 Nm) The light diode of the receiver 9 lights green. To start the device increase the number of revolutions. If there are pressed no buttons on the remote control 8 for approx. 20 min. it stops automatically.
Direction of rotation The sense of rotation is shown with the yellow diodes on the buttons for the direction of rotation. By pressing the corresponding button (arrow forward/arrow backward) you can choose the right direction. The change of the direction happens with a soft stop and a soft start. All of the other parameters stay the same (number of rotations, motor power). Number of rotations You can achieve an increase of the number of rotations by pressing the “rabbit” button. To increase the number of rotations step by step press the button only short. The light diodes show you the actual number of rotation in 5 steps. The fifth step is according to a maximum number of rotations of 60 rotations per minute. You can reduce the number of rotations until stop by pressing the “snail” button. Stay on the “rabbit” or “snail” button for some time to change the number of rotations constantly to maximum or stop. When the foot-rests are fitted, do not start the motor until your feet are properly in the foot-rests and secured in position.
26
Resistance of the motor The motor power has different means for active and passive training: Active training: You can adjust the braking resistance of the device by regulating the power of the motor. By training actively, the motor power shows you the resistance you have to overcome with muscle power. The more the display moves to the right the bigger is the braking resistance. Passive training: The adjustment of the motor power shows you the maximum power the motor uses to move the foot-rest/therapygrips. You can adjust the power that effects your body with the adjustment of the motor power.
Brake power adjustment for THERA-fit
The brake resistance can be varied stepless with the adjustment button 9. To increase the brake resistance turn it to the right, to decrease it turn the adjustment button to the left.

Guidance on electromagnetic environment Portable and mobile radio equipment should not be used in closer proximity with the THERA-fit (including power cord) than the recommended safe distance. That distance is calculated according to the equation appropriate to the transmission frequency. Recommended safe distance: d = [3.5/3] P = 1.17 P d = [3.5/3] P = 1.17 P for 80 MHz to 800 MHz d = [7.0/3] P = 2.33 P for 800 MHz to 2.5 GHz
where P is the rated output of the transmitter in watts (W) as stated by the transmitter manufacturer and d is the recommended safe distance in metres (m).
The field strength of fixed radio transmitters at all frequencies should be below the compliance level based on on-site measurements. Interference is possible in the vicinity of equipment that carries the following symbol. )

NOTE 1: At 80 MHz and 800 MHz the higher frequency range applies. NOTE 2: This guidance may not be applicable in all cases. The propagation of electromagnetic energy is affected by absorption and reflection by buildings, objects and people.
34
❑ The theoretical field strength of fixed transmitters such as radio telephone and mobile agricultural radio equipment base stations, amateur radio transmitters, AM and FM radio and TV transmitters cannot be precisely determined in advance. In order to determine the electromagnetic environment in respect of fixed transmitters, a study of the location should be considered. If the measured field strength at the location of the THERA-fit exceeds the compliance levels, the THERA-fit should be observed to verify that it is functioning as intended. If unusual performance characteristics are observed, additional measures may be required such as modifying or changing the location of the THERA-fit. ❑ Above the frequency range of 150 kHz to 80 MHz the field strength should be less than 3 V/m.
Recommended safe distances between portable and mobile equipment, high-frequency telecommunications equipment and the THERA-fit
The THERA-fit is intended for operation in the electromagnetic environment specified below. The THERA-fit owner or user can help to prevent electromagnetic interference by observing the minimum distances between portable and mobile high-frequency telecommunications equipment (transmitters) and the THERA-fit as specified below (according to the output power of the communication device). Rated output of Safe distance based on transmission frequency transmitter [m] [W] 150 kHz to 80 MHz 80 MHz to 800 MHz 800 MHz to 2.5 GHz d = 1.17 P d = 1.17 P d = 2.33 P 0,01 0.12 0.12 0.23 0,1 0.37 0.37 0.74 1 1.17 1.17 2.33 10 3.70 3.70 7.37 100 11.70 11.70 23.30 For transmitters whose rated output is not specified in the above table, the distance can be determined using the appropriate equation in each case and in which P is the rated output of the transmitter in watts (W) as stated by the transmitter manufacturer. NOTE 1 : For calculating the recommended safe distance from transmitters within the frequency range of 80 MHz to 2.5 GHz an additional factor of 10/3 was applied. That reduces the likelihood that a mobile/portable communications device inadvertently brought into the patient area will cause interference. NOTE 2: This guidance may not be applicable in all cases. The propagation of electromagnetic energy is affected by absorption and reflection by buildings, objects and people.
