SPIRIT BED – QUICK REFERENCE GUIDE TO OPERATE THE BED: • Use the rail control, patient hand control or the footboard control panel to raise or lower the head section, the knee section, or the entire bed. • The patient controls can be locked or unlocked (to restrict patient use). Lockouts for each bed function are located on the footboard control underneath each function. When the “lock” light is on, that particular function is locked on the hand control. If the “lock” light is off, then the hand control is active. TO MOVE AND LOCK THE BED: • Use the red and green pedal: RED = All four wheels locked GREEN = Foot-end wheels lock into ‘steer’ mode (head-end wheels swivel) NEUTRAL = Middle position unlocks all four wheels
TO OPERATE TRENDELENBURG: • Push and hold the red “Trendelenburg” or green “Reverse Trendelenburg” button on the footboard control to achieve either function. To automatically level the bed, push and hold the opposite function until the bed stops. TO OPERATE ‘CARDIAC CHAIR’: • Push and hold the ‘chair’ button. Green light illuminates when bed angle is attained, then head and knee will raise to full extension. Push and hold button again to remove chair. (Bed will reverse its position each time the ‘Chair’ button is pressed). TO OPERATE ‘INSTANT CPR’: • Push and release the red ‘CPR’ button : head and knee sections will automatically flatten. TO OPERATE ‘AUTO CONTOUR’: • Press the ‘Auto Contour’ button so that the green light is on. Ensure “lock-out” lights are off. Knee section will raise automatically when head section is raised. TO OPERATE ‘QUAD RAILS’: • To lower the rails gently push the black knob and then rotate the rail down. Head end rails rotate toward the headboard; foot end rails rotate toward the footboard. The rail will automatically lock in the ‘up’ or ‘secure’ position. SPIRIT GUIDANCE NOTES

Familiarise your self with the various functions Check for obstructions before raising the bed; (i.e. Windowsills) Check for obstructions before lowering the bed. Make sure it is clean Make sure all mattress deck sections are flat before putting a patient on it
Safe working load = 225kgs or 35 stone. (Throughout its travel range) Maximum load on either Quad-Rails = 77kgs or 12 stones. Ensure that mattress used conforms to the bed – RECOMMENDED SIZE IS 35.5 INCHES / 900MM WIDE 80 INCHES/2030MM LONG MINIMUM 6 INCHES HIGH Do not stand on the bed.
THIS BED IS WATERPROOF:
• IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT THE POWER CABLE DOES NOT GET TRAPPED BETWEEN MOVING PARTS. THE LIKELIHOOD OF THIS HAPPENING MAY BE GREATER WHEN THE BED IS PLACED IN ITS LOWEST POSITION.

AT THE INSTALLATION The person supplying and setting up the bed will familiarise staff with how it operates. All staff that may come into contact with the bed whether nurses, domestics or porters for example, will need to understand how the bed operates. A FURTHER TRAINING SESSION MAY BE REQUIRED FOR THE ABOVE STANDARD TO BE MET AND IN ORDER TO CONSOLIDATE STAFF COMPETENCE REMEMBER: TRAINING IN THE USE OF EQUIPMENT IS A LEGAL REQUIREMENT The prerequisites for using the Spirit Ultra Low bed are that it has been electrically tested and that the person operating it has had instruction in its use. The bed must also have an up to date inspection record.
The Spirit Plus Ultra Low Bed is designed with a unique Central Lock-and-Steer System. The bed can only be moved when you have disengaged the Central Lock System. ALWAYS UNPLUG THE POWER CABLE FROM THE WALL SOCKET BEFORE MOVING THE BED AND REMEMBER THAT A TRAILING CABLE CAN PRESENT A TRIPPING HAZARD The power cable can also be unplugged from the wall socket at night if for example there were concerns over cables and patient safety. If this were done, the bed could still be operated from the Nurse’s Control Panel at the foot of the bed because it has a back-up power supply. Should staff need at anytime to immobilise the bed completely there is a lockout feature. (see page 8 for details) SPIRIT GUIDANCE NOTES

OPERATION
The nurse or patient can operate the bed with the built in patient controls in the Quad-Rails, or only by the nurse from the Nurse’s Control Panel at the foot of the bed. The embedded patient controls in the Quad-Rails, will only function when the orange lights (LED’s) beside each function button (touch pad) at the Nurse’s Control Panel are off. When an orange light underneath each function button is on, then that function cannot be operated by the patient controls. In this way the patient can be prevented from operating the bed. Alternatively (and for safety reasons) it may be necessary to immobilise the bed altogether. The inner patient controls (on Quad-Rails) operate the head section (as in sitting up), the foot section (which slightly flexes the knees) plus a Nurse call alarm button. The embedded outer Nurse control station (on the Quad-Rails) allows for the raising and lowering of the whole bed frame, plus profiling head and knee section.
THE NURSE’S STATION HAS MORE FUNCTIONS
• It has all the functions of the embedded patient controls and can also raise the head, knee and foot sections simultaneously.
• It can be used to immobilise the patient control functions. • The bed can be placed into cardiac chair positioning. • Trendelenburg and reverse Trendelenburg positions can be achieved of 18 decrees tilt.

RELEASE THE BUTTON WHEN THE DESIRED TILT POSITION HAS BEEN ACHIEVED. THE BED WILL SELF-LEVEL FROM THE TRENDELENBURG POSITIONS BY PRESSING THE REVERSE TRENDELENBURG BUTTON UNTIL THE BED STOPS. SIMILARLY, TO LEVEL THE BED FROM THE REVERSE TRENDELENBURG POSITION, SIMPLY PRESS AND HOLD THE TRENDELENBURG BUTTON (THE BED WILL STOP MOVING ONCE IT ACHIEVES A LEVEL POSITION.
.
There is also a Cardiopulmonary (CPR) mode, which flattens all deck panels with one touch.
The Quad-Rails The moulded Quad-Rails on either side of the bed DO NOT have the same function as cot-sides / bed-rails. Full-length bed rails can be purchased and fitted to the Spirit bed if required and subject to an appropriate assessment. The Quad-rails are released by gently pressing the black knob, then rotating the rail down. The head end rail rotates toward the headboard, while the foot end rail rotates towards the footboard. The rail will automatically lock into place at its uppermost position. Quad-rails have two positions: 1. 2.

SPIRIT BED MOBILISATION This function enables the bed to be moved. 1. Using your foot, press down on Green section of Central Lock and Steer System, until the pedal is level (“NEUTRAL” position). This will unlock all four casters. (Use this position when moving the bed in small spaces, from side-to-side, etc. Please note that when the NEUTRAL mode is activated properly, the bed should move freely without any unusual noises. If any clicking noises are present in the NEUTRAL mode, stop and check that the pedal is level. Adjust if necessary.) 2. When moving the bed a long distance, press down fully on the Green section of the Central Lock and Steer (“STEER” position.) This will allow four casters to roll, but will prevent the foot end casters from swivelling. (This mode helps to keep the bed straight during transport, turn corners, etc.) 3. Once again to lock the casters, press down on fully Red section of the Central Lock and Steer System. This will prevent all four casters from rolling or swivelling.
DO NOT LEAVE A MOBILISED BED UNATTENDED, ENSURE THAT IT IS STABLE BEFORE LEAVING IT.
THE BED SHOULD BE LEFT IN ITS LOWEST POSSIBLE POSITION WHEN THE BED OCCUPANT IS LEFT UNATTENDED. SPIRIT GUIDANCE NOTES
