Using the BrainZ Adaptor Set The BrainZ Adaptor Set is for single-patient use with hydrogel, needle, or disc electrodes. Electrodes must have 1.5 mm touch-proof connectors (DIN 42802 standard). Short electrode wires (e.g. 30 cm) may provide better signal quality. Read these instructions in conjunction with the BRM Brain Monitor Reference Manual, the BRM Onscreen Help or BRM3 Quick Guide, and any instructions provided by the electrode manufacturer. Caution: US Federal law restricts this device to sale by or on the order of a physician. Caution: Use hydrogel electrodes only on unbroken skin.

Warm hydrogel electrodes by placing them in the incubator or under the first layer of linen on a heat table. Use the appropriate electrode positioning aid to locate the correct electrode positions. Mark the sites with a skin marker. Select a site with no hair for the reference electrode, on or near the shoulder. For hydrogel or disc electrodes, use gauze to apply NuPrep gel to the electrode sites. Gently rub to remove the surface layer of dead skin. Use clean gauze to remove any excess gel and dry the skin. For needle electrodes, clean the site around the insertion point. Attach hydrogel electrodes, insert needles or attach discs to the marked sites. Make sure there is no contact between the electrodes. For hydrogel electrodes, cup your hand over each sensor and apply gentle pressure for 20 - 30 seconds, to warm and seat the gel. For needle electrodes, secure the needles to prevent them being pulled out. Connect the Adaptor Set black wires to the back electrodes hBLACKISBACKv and the MROMIBÐTFOBPÐQLÐQEBÐCOLKQÐBIB@QOLABP Ð1EBÐh)"#1iÐ>KAÐh/&$%1iÐI>?BIPÐ@LOOBPMLKAÐTFQEÐQEBÐ ?>?VgPÐIBCQÐ>KAÐOFDEQ Ð LKKB@QÐQEBÐDOeen wire to the reference electrode. Connect the Adaptor Set to the BRM Brain Monitor DAU. Make sure the arrows on the connectors are aligned. Route all cables so they are out of reach of the baby. Check for good electrode contact using the BRM Brain Monitor Signal Status screen.

For hydrogel electrodes, carefully lift one edge and wipe underneath with a damp gauze pad to wet the gel. Remove the sensor as the gel releases. Never try to pull the sensor free quickly or without water. For other electrode QVMBP ÐOBCBOÐQLÐQEBÐBIB@QOLABÐJ>KRC>@QROBOgPÐ instructions. Troubleshooting tips x
If the impedance of any electrode drops to a low value (less than 0.3 kOhms), check the electrodes are not touching each other.
x
If any electrode is indicated as yellow or red on the Signal Status screen: a. For hydrogel electrodes, apply heat and pressure from cupped hand to re-seat the sensor. b. For other electrode types, or if (a) is ineffective, remove the faulty electrode, reprepare the site, and re-apply the same electrode or a new electrode.
