wWarnings Before using the Elevating Base, read through this entire manual. As with all medical equipment, attempting to use this device without a thorough understanding of its operation may result in patient or user injury. This device should be operated only by personnel trained in its operation under the direction of qualified medical personnel familiar with the risks and benefits of this type of device. Additional precautions specific to certain procedures are found in the text of this manual. Do not use the Elevating Base in the presence of flammable anesthetics. A possible explosion hazard exists under these conditions. Safely mounting or dismounting the Care Plus Incubator requires two people. Remove the controller unit before mounting or dismounting the incubator. Always complete the checkout procedure and verify that the incubator is securely mounted before using the base. Always unplug the Elevating Base from the power outlet before any service, cleaning, or maintenance procedure. Plug the unit back in during the procedure only if you are specifically instructed to do so.

Detailed information for more extensive repairs is included in the service section of this manual (Chapter 6, Service Information) solely for the convenience of users having proper knowledge, tools and test equipment, and for service representatives trained by Ohmeda.

1/Introduction 1.1 How to use this manual Thank you for adding the Elevating Base or Stationary Pedestal to your Care Plus system. Please take a moment to review the User Responsibility Statement on the inside of the front cover; it describes what is expected of you to maintain the base. Also read the Warranty on the back inside cover; it outlines Ohmeda’s responsibility in case of a functional defect. This manual is divided into two sections. The first section tells you: • How to use the base controls • How to test the base before using it with a patient • How to clean the base The second section describes specific service and troubleshooting procedures. Both sections feature individual tables of contents and precautions so that the first five chapters can be stored with the base and the sixth chapter (Service Information) can be stored in the biomedical department. Before you use the base, make sure that you understand the warnings and cautions. Warnings alert you to situations that could injure the patient or the operator. For example:

Cautions alert you to conditions that may damage the equipment. For example:

1.2 What the Elevating Base can do

The Elevating Base lets you adjust the Care Plus Incubator to the height that is most comfortable for you. The mattress can be as low as 34 inches (86 cm) or as high as 42 inches (107 cm) above the floor. The foot pedal controls leave your hands free to care for the patient.

1/Introduction 1.3 What the Stationary Pedestal offers The Stationary Pedestal provides a movable mounting pedestal for the Care Plus Incubator at a fixed mattress height of 38 inches (97 cm). Equipped with the same casters as the Elevating Base, the Stationary Pedestal and Incubator can easily be moved and then locked in position. The same accessories that are used with the Elevating Base, such as storage modules and rail systems, may also be mounted on the Stationary Pedestal.

2/Getting Started 2.1 Incoming Inspection Inspect the base for any signs of shipping damage immediately after unpacking. If the base or its accessories appear to have been damaged in shipment, file a damage claim with the shipping carrier within 15 days of receipt. Keep all packaging materials until the claim is resolved. Also check the packing slip against the shipment to verify that all accessory devices are present.

2.2 Mounting the Care Plus Incubator 1. Remove the controller from the Care Plus Incubator.

w Safely mounting or dismounting the Care Plus Incubator requires two people. Remove the controller unit before mounting or dismounting the incubator.

2. Lift the Care Plus Incubator onto the base. Make sure that the table top handles face the same direction as the incubator. 3. Install the four mounting screws.

WARNING

w If mounting hardware is not securely fastened, the incubator could tip off of the base.

4. Install the controller. Lift the levers on the controller and slide it into the incubator as shown in Figure 2-1. Push the levers down to lock the controller in place.

2/Getting Started 5. To remove incubator, remove the controller from the Care Plus Incubator and reverse steps 4 and 3. 6. Install the label for the refresher instructions on the Stationary Pedestal pull-out tray. A set of labels in all languages has been provided for your convenience. See Figure 2-2. Note: The refresher instructions that were provided with your Care Plus Incubator can be attached to the tray with the adhesive on the back cover of the book.

2.3 Mounting the Base Rail System WARNING

2/Getting Started 2.3.1 Units With Pre-Attached Rail Support Bracket Prior to HCB Serial Numbers 1. Insert the two 3/8 x 2.5 inch, threaded studs from the rail kit into any two of the support bracket mounting holes. Thread each stud five full turns. Refer to Figure 2-3. 2. Attach the rail assembly to the rail support bracket: a. Remove the cover from the cross rail. Set aside the eight screws and lockwashers for reuse. b. Fit the cross rail over the threaded studs. Note: The threaded studs are alignment guides, not weight bearing supports. c. Continue to support the rails. Insert two, 3/8 inch bolts and internal lockwashers from inside the cross rail. Torque the bolts to 200 ± 5 in. lbs. (22.6 ± 0.6 Nm). d. Remove and discard the threaded studs. Replace them with 3/8 inch bolts and internal lockwashers. Torque the bolts to 200 ± 5 in. lbs. (22.6 ± 0.6 Nm). e. Thread one, 8-32 x 1/2 inch grounding screw with a #8 lockwasher from the rear of the cross rail into the rail support bracket.

CAUTION

w Make sure that the rail support bracket is securely attached to the rails. The bolts must be torqued to 200 ± 5 in. lbs. (22.6 ± 0.6 Nm).

3. Replace the cross rail cover, using the eight screws and lockwashers previously removed. Note: To install a storage module, continue with the next Section, Mounting a Storage Module. To mount the incubator, see Section 2.2, Mounting the Care Plus Incubator.

2/Getting Started 2.3.2 Units Without Pre-Attached Rail Support Bracket Prior to HCB Serial Numbers Note: If your base does not have a pre-attached rail support bracket, always mount the rail system before installing a storage module or mounting the incubator. 1. If the incubator is already installed, you must remove it as described in Section 2.2. Keep the screws for reassembly. Refer to Figure 2-4.

2. Remove the eight mounting screws that attach the table top. Keep the screws for reassembly. 3. If one or more storage modules is attached, it’s not necessary to completely remove them. Just remove the three, 10-24 screws along the outer edge of each module. Keep the screws for reassembly. 4. Lift off the table top. 5. Remove the support plate. Have one person hold the support plate to keep it from falling, while another removes the four support plate mounting screws and lockwashers. Keep the screws and lockwashers for reassembly. Refer to Figure 2-5.

2/Getting Started 6. Replace any two of the support plate mounting screws (removed in step 5) with the 3/8 x 2.5 inch threaded studs from the rail kit. Thread each stud five full turns into the screw hole. 7. Position the rail support bracket over the threaded studs. Make sure that the rear of the bracket (side with screw holes) points towards the rear of the base.

8. Position the support plate over the threaded studs. Make sure that the front of the support plate faces the front of the base. Refer to Figure 2-6.

2/Getting Started 9. Replace two of the support plate mounting screws (1-1/2 inch screws) and lockwashers. Torque the screws to 200 ± 5 in. lbs. (22.6 ± 0.6 Nm). 10. Remove the two threaded studs. Save the studs for use in later steps. 11. Replace the studs with the two remaining mounting screws (1-1/2 inch screws) and lockwashers. Torque the screws to 200 ± 5 in. lbs. (22.6 ± 0.6 Nm). 12. Install a grounding screw (#8-32 x 1/2 inch) and lockwasher in the rail support bracket.

13. Replace the table top (Figure 2-4). Replace screw #1 first. Then replace screw #2. Finally, replace the remaining six screws removed in step 2. Make sure that the front of the platform faces the front of the base. 14. If one or more storage modules are attached, replace the three, 10-24 screws removed from the edge of each module. 15. Insert the two 3/8 x 2.5 inch threaded studs from the rail kit into any two of the support bracket mounting holes. Thread each stud five full turns. Refer to Figure 2-7.

17. Replace the cross rail cover, using the eight screws and lockwashers previously removed. Note: To install a storage module, continue with Section 2.4, Mounting a Storage Module on the base. To mount the incubator, continue with Section 2.2, Mounting the Care Plus on the base. 2-7

2/Getting Started 2.3.3 Units Without Pre-Attached Rail Support Bracket With HCB Serial Numbers 1. Position the rail bracket under the table top support plate at the back of the elevating column. See Figure 2-8. 2. Fasten the bracket to the support plate using the seven 5/16-18 mounting screws and lock washers provided with the kit. Torque to 120 ± 5 lbs. in. (13.6 ± 0.6 Nm). If storage modules are installed, a 1 ft. socket extension is required for this procedure. Note: The support plate and table top need not be removed to install the rail bracket. 3. Install rails as described in Section 2.31.

2/Getting Started 2.3.4 Mounting the Overhead Shelf 1. Mount the basic rails. 2. Loosen the four acorn nuts on the inside of the overhead shelf. Refer to Figure 2-9.

3. Remove the plastic end caps from each rail. 4. Slide the locking lugs into the rails. 5. Align the top of the shelf with the top of the rails and hand tighten the acorn nuts. 6. Use a 9/16 inch wrench to tighten the acorn nuts to 200 ± 5 in. lbs. (22.6 ± 0.6 Nm). Make sure that the shelf remains level. 7. Replace the plastic end caps.

2/Getting Started 2.4 Mounting a Storage Module CAUTION

w The total weight of all items placed in a storage module cannot exceed 25 lbs. (12 kg).

1. Remove the rear incubator mounting screw from the side of the base that you want to mount the storage module on (right or left). Keep the screw for reassembly. Refer to Figure 2-10. 2. Insert three button head screws on the underside of the base platform (Figure 2-9). Partially tighten the screws, leaving a 1/4 inch (6mm) gap.

3. Remove the drawer(s) from the storage module: a. Open the drawer. b. Simultaneously, push up on the right and down on the left slide release lever. c. Pull the drawer out of the slides. d. Push the slides back into the storage module. 4. Locate the three keyed holes in the top of the storage module. Align these holes with the three screws on the underside of the base and slide the storage module forward.

2/Getting Started 5. Attach the storage module to the Elevating Base platform with the six remaining screws. 6. Tighten all nine button head screws using the hex key included in the kit. 7. Replace the incubator mounting screw. 8. Fit the drawer(s) back into the storage module slides and close the drawer(s). Make sure that the drawer stop prevents you from pulling the drawer(s) out of the storage module.

2.5 Checkout Procedure WARNING

w Always complete the checkout procedure and verify that the incubator is securely mounted before using the base.

1. Check for external damage. 2. Make sure that the incubator is securely mounted to the base. 3. If a rail system is attached to the base, check that accessories are securely mounted and that their weight is evenly distributed between the two rails.

CAUTIONS

w Rail mounted accessories should not exceed 20 lbs (9 kg) on either side. Total accessory weight, including items placed on the overhead shelf, must not exceed 90 lbs (41 kg).

w All rail mounted accessories except IV poles must be mounted below the accessory weight caution label.

4. Make sure that the casters are securely attached. 5. Verify that the base rolls freely when the brakes are not set. Then, set the brakes and verify that the base stays in place.

WARNING

w Always set the brakes before placing a patient in the incubator. For Elevating Base models only, proceed with steps 6-9. For Stationary Pedestal models, proceed to step 10. 6. Verify that the area is free of flammable anesthetic agents and other flammable substances.

WARNING

w Do not use the Elevating Base in the presence of flammable anesthetics. A possible explosion hazard exists under these conditions.

7. Verify that the power cord is tightly plugged into the Elevating Base’s socket. If necessary, loosen the plug guard and connect the power cord. Then, reposition the plug guard and tighten the screws. Plug the other end of the cord into a power

2/Getting Started outlet (Figure 2-11). On units with HCB serial number a green power indicator lamp located at the Elevating Base foot switch should illuminate. 8. Depress the M pedal and verify that the incubator mattress rises to approximately 42 inches (107 cm) above the floor.

WARNING

w Before raising or lowering the base, check that there is adequate slack in tubing and cable connections and that no obstructions (e.g. shelves, etc.) limit the range of motion.

9. Depress the ? pedal and verify that the incubator mattress lowers to approximately 34 inches (86 cm) above the floor. 10. Before using the Care Plus system with a patient, verify proper operation of the incubator and all other system components.
