1 SAFETY 1.1 Intended Use This instrument has been designed to be used with the Olympus ultrasonic endoscopes, Olympus ultrasonic probes or Olympus esophageal ultrasonic probe to observe real--time, ultrasonic images. Only trained medical personnel should use this instrument. Do not use for any purpose other than its intended use. The EU--M30 may be built into two types of systems. One is the stand alone ultrasonic system. The other is the ultrasonic system combined with the EVIS Video System Center.
1.2 Instruction Manual Before use, thoroughly review this manual and the manuals of all instruments which will be used during the procedure. The endoscopic technique and medical aspects of endoscopy are not discussed in this manual. Keep all instruction manuals in a safe, accessible location. If you have any questions and comments concerning information in this manual, please contact Olympus. Refer to PART 2 for instructions on using the ultrasound centre as a stand alone system. Refer to PART 3 for instructions on the combined use of the ultrasound centre with an EVIS Video System Center.
1.3 Instrument Compatibility Refer to the system chart in Appendix A to confirm that the EU--M30 is compatible with the ancillary equipment being used. Using incompatible instruments or equipment can result in patient injury or equipment damage.
1.4 Upon Receipt Visually inspect the instrument for damage and confirm that it operates correctly. Do not use this instrument if it appears to be damaged; contact Olympus.
1.5 Repair / Modification This instrument contains no user serviceable parts. Do not modify or attempt repair; patient injury or equipment damage can result.
1.6 Signal Words The following words are used throughout this manual. DANGER

:
Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, may result in moderate or minor injury. Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, may result in equipment damage. Indicates additional, helpful information.
1.7 Warnings and Cautions WARNING
S
S S
The EU--M30 is not explosion--proof. Do not operate the EU--M30 where flammable anesthetics are used or in a room recently washed with flammable cleaning and disinfecting agents. Cleaners can produce explosive vapors. The EU--M30 is type BF electro--medical equipment. Leakage current from Type BF equipment may be dangerous and cause ventricular fibrillation or otherwise seriously affect the cardiac function of the patient. Accordingly, always adhere to the following points. Never apply a connected ultrasonic endoscope or probe to the heart. Never allow an accessory, another endoscope, etc. which is in contact with the heart (or heart region) to come into contact with the ultrasonic endoscope or probe, when connected to the EU--M30.
S
Observe the following precautions strictly. Failure may place the patient and medical personnel at risk of electrical shock. Never use the EU--M30 in conjunction with electro--surgical equipment. Keep liquids away from the EU--M30. If spilled liquid has entered the EU--M30, stop the operation immediately and contact Olympus. Do not prepare, inspect or use EU--M30 with wet hands. Always connect all ancillary equipment to an AC mains socket via isolation transformer.
S S CAUTION
S S S S S
To prevent electrical shock hazards, the main frame of the EU--M30 must be grounded securely and effectively. Always connect the 3--pin power cord plug to an output socket. Do not use the EU--M30 in environment where electrical noise is generated by electro--surgical equipment, etc. When using ultrasonic endoscope or probe in conjunction with X--ray device, electrical noise may appear in the ultrasound image. To prevent equipment damage, never touch the electrical contacts on the scope connector. Do not place objects on or near the ventilation grills of the equipment in use. When used in conjunction with any other electrical device always ensure they have undergone a full safety check.

5 GENERAL PRECAUTIONS Observe the following precautions when handling this instrument. WARNING
CAUTION
S
This device is not intended for fetal use.
S
To prevent unnecessary patient exposure to ultrasound radiation, follow the as--low--as--reasonably--achievable (ALARA) principle with Olympus ultrasound equipment. Freeze the image whenever you are not actively viewing the “live” ultrasound image. When the equipment is in the FREEZE mode, no ultrasonic energy is emitted into the patient. During transport, always handle the endoscopic ultrasound center EU--M30 with care. Always be aware of other mechanical hazards when transporting the EU--M30.
S
S
Switches on the keyboard should not be pressed with a pointed or hard object since this will damage the surface of the keyboard.
