Aspiration Pump OPERATION, MAINTENANCE, AND SERVICE MANUAL DEVICEDESCRIPTION The Aspiration Pump is intended for general suction use in hospitals or clinics and is latex free. OPERATTNG PR~NCIPLE The negative and positive pressures of a rotary pump are developed by mounting the rotor off center in relation to the inside diameter of the pump housing. The four carbon slides in the rotor wipe past two portholes in a clockwise rotation. This action increases and decreases the cubic content of the air in the pump head and produces the negative and positive pressures. INDICATION FOR USE The Aspiration Pump is intended for general suction use in hospitals or clinics and is latex free. CONTRAINDICATIONS There are no contraindications. WARNINGS Do not block air vents in bottom or on back. Unit may not restart if run for extended periods of time without air vent flow. Do not use in the presence of flammable anesthetics. To help prevent fire or shock hazard, use replacement fuses of equal size and rating. PRECAUTIONS Do not use petroleum base compounds, acids, caustics, or chlorinated solvents to clean or lubricate any parts. It will reduce the service life of the pump. Use only water-base solvents for cleaning. Do not block bottom or back air vents. Unit may overheat and shut off or fail to restart if run for extended periods of time without airflow. Do not use in the presence of flammable anesthetics. Federal law (USA) restricts this device to sale by or on the order of a physician. OPERATING PROCEDURE 1) The "On-Off' switch should be in the "Off' position. 2) Plug the line cord into a grounded electrical outlet, making sure that it is the same voltage as indicated on the unit nameplate. The receptacle should be marked "Hospital Grade" to ensure grounding. 3) Be sure the length of tubing from the bottle to the bacteria filter is dry. 4) Push the "On-Off switch to the "On" position. 5) Check the degree of vacuum by pinching off the patient tube. The amount of vacuum, in inches of mercury, will register on the vacuum gauge. To increase the vacuum, turn the regulator needle clockwise. To decrease the vacuum, turn the regulator needle anticlockwise. 6) Your pump is now ready for patient use.

PumpICanister Tubing The Aspiration Pump is provided with PumplCanister Tubing, which is a short length of tubing having connectors on each end that connects the Aspiration Pump to the Canister. High Efficiency Bacteria Filter The high efficiency bacteria filter is custom engineered to prevent fluid and aerosol contamination of mobile suction units. This filter features a hydrophobic microporous membrane that filters air with maximum efficiency (0.3 micron patches in air), while blocking the flow of aqueous fluids and aerosol contaminants. The high efficiency filter protects against suction pump contamination in the case of canister overflow because it prevents the overflow from reaching the pump.
NOTE: Extended use of alcohol or solvents may reduce the hydrophobic properties of the microporous membrane of the filter. Canister The Aspiration Pump is compatible with either a 1200 ml Glass Canister (non-US only) or a 1500 ml disposable canister. Additional canisters are available by contacting your Penumbra sales representative.

CANISTER 1500ml Disposable Canister
Description
Set-Up
This canister has a self-sealing material that acts as an overflow protection device. When the filter comes in contact with moisture, the self-sealing material immediately stops flow to the patient and prevents any fluids from getting into the system. 1. Make sure the filter shutoff is in place in the underside of the lid. 2. Place the bottle on a flat surface and snap the lid on firmly. 3. Connect the lid marked "PATIENT" to the point of use. 4. Connect the PumpJCanister Tubing to the connector on the lid marked "VACUUM. 5. Insert the Canister into the canister well. 6. Connect the other end of the PumpJCanister Tubing to the barbed end of the bacteria filter.
1200ml Glass Canister*
This canister has an overflow protection device called the Cap and Float Assembly. When collected patient drainage fluids reach the last graduation on your collection bottle, the vacuum supply to the collection bottle is shut off by the Cap and Float Assembly. 1. Sterilize the Glass Canister and cap prior to use. 2. Check the bottle top edges for nicks. If the bottle
top is nicked it will not seal. 3. Check that the cap gasket is properly positioned
inside the cover. 4. Check that the float moves freely.
5. Screw the cover assembly securely onto the bottle,
making sure that the gasket seals. 6. Insert the Glass Canister into the canister well. 7. Connect the PumpJCanister Tubing to the bacteria
filter and to the vertical fittingon the cap and float assembly. 8.Connect the metal tube on the cap and float assembly (at an approximately 90-degree angle) to the point of use.
PUMP OPERATION Place the "ON-OFF" switch in the "OFF" position. 1. Plug the line cord into a grounded electrical outlet, making sure that it is the same voltage as indicated on the unit nameplate. Ensure the receptacle is properly grounded. 2. Verify that the tubing from the bottle to the bacteria filter is dry. 3. Push the "ON-OFF" switch to the " O N position 4. Verify the degree of vacuum by pinching the point of use tubing. The level of vacuum will register on the vacuum gauge. To increase the vacuum, turn the regulator clockwise. To decrease the vacuum, turn the regulator anticlockwise. 5. The pump is now ready for patient use. * The Glass Canister and cap assembly may be re-sterilized (non-US product ONLY). MAINTENANCE FREQUENCY AND PROCEDURES
Bacteria Filter Replacement Thefilter should be replaced monthly, at a minimum, or should be replaced earlier f a reduction of theflow rate is noticed. To replace the bacteria filter, unscrew the filter from the filter connection fitting by hand, turning the filter in a counter-clockwise direction. Screw a new filter into the fitting by turning the filter in a clockwise direction. Tighten only finger tight. NOTE: Care must be taken when replacing the filter to prevent thread damage due to cross-threading and over tightening. Muffler Replacement The unit has a cylinder type$lter-mufler. The cotton in the cylinder type muffler should be replaced when discolored. Remove the cap and remove the old cotton. Replace with clean cotton. Caution should be used to pack the cotton loosely as the suction power of the pump will be greatly reduced if the cotton is too tightly packed inside the muffler tube. Pack the muffler while the ON-OFF switch is in the "OFF" position and the unit has been unplugged from the electrical outlet.
Pump Flushing A pump that has been slightly flooded or becomes sluggish will show a lower degree of vacuum orpressure. The unit may also become noisy and run unusually hot. These dzflculties may usually be corrected byflushing. Should excessive dirt, foreign particles, and/or moisture be permitted to enter the pump, the vanes may stick or break. Flush the pump to resolve this condition. NOTE: Use eye protection and flush in a well-ventilated area. Pump Removal 1) Place the ON/OFF switch in "OFF" position. 2) Remove the power cord from the power source. 3) Remove the upper housing. 4) Disconnect rubber tubing from pump. 5) Remove the pinup ground wire from the chassis ground screw. 6) Remove the power cord ground wire front the chassis ground screw. 7) Disconnect the two pump power wires from the terminal block. 8) Remove the four motor mounting hex nuts from the pump mounting plate. 9) Lift the pump from the base. 10) Install in reverse order.
