Device Overview
Device Description/Functions SERVOX ® digital Speech Aid Inserting the Battery
ENGLISH
Completely charge the NiMH battery in the charger before using the device for the first time (see LA 2.40 Charger General Instructions). Remove the bottom cover and place the battery into the device with the minus pole (‘–‘) pointing away from you.
Please note: For optimal use the batteries should be alternated, i.e. after each use the battery should be swapped. You can number the batteries to make this easier.
Battery Check
Button A Button B Volume Control/Battery Status Display Titanium Housing
The SERVOX ®digital electronics ensure that the volume will stay at the set level and will not decrease with reduced battery voltage. A red light will flash during use if the battery requires charging (see illustration).
Safety Cord Bottom Cove
If the battery reaches a voltage level that does not allow for normal use, the red light (LED) will remain illuminated but no sound will be emitted.
Hard Membrane Battery Charger Operating Display Charging Shaft for SERVOX digital ®
The speech aid must then be charged in the charger or the battery changed.

Operating the Buttons
Adjusting the Pitch It is recommended that a similar pitch is chosen to that of the natural voice. The pitch must be adjusted separately for each button. The following steps are necessary for changing the pitch:
ENGLISH
The upper button (A) is used to produce the base vocal tone. Additional accentuation can be produced using the lower button (B). All SERVOX ®digital Speech Aid users should first practice speaking using button A only. Button B should only be used once you have become comfortable using button A.
Both buttons can be operated using either the index or middle fingers (1st illustration)...
... or the thumb (2nd and 3rd illustration).
Adjusting the Volume The volume can be adjusted using the volume controller (rocker switch). The following modes are possible: a) Setting buttons A and B with different volume levels. To adjust the volume of each button separately: first push the button (a tone is audible), then either increase the volume by pushing the rocker switch upwards at the same time, or lower the volume by pushing it downwards. b) Changing the volume for both buttons A and B Button A Button B Volume Controller (Rocker Switch) 24
No button is pressed in this case (no tone is heard). Increase the volume by pushing the rocker switch upwards or decrease the volume by pushing it downwards. Press the corresponding button to check that the volume has been set accordingly.
1. Unscrew the bottom cover and remove battery.
2. Hold the top of the device and slide off the titanium housing.
3. Place the battery back into the battery compartment and screw the bottom cover back on. 4.a Setting button A: Push DIP switch 1 to the ON position and DIP switch 2 to the OFF position.
4.b Setting button B: Push DIP switch 1 to the OFF position and DIP switch 2 to the ON position.
25
5. Press button A once to increase the frequency by 1 Hz. Press button B once to reduce the frequency by 1 Hz. Press the corresponding button several times to adjust the frequency by several levels. If the button remains pressed, the currently-set tone is activated and can be checked. Check to see whether the changed pitch is as desired.
Carrying Cord You can wear the device around your neck using the carrying cord. To remove or replace the carrying cord, proceed as follows:
ENGLISH
6. After the settings have been made, slide both DIP switches to the OFF position (see small illustration). Attention: After setting the desired pitch, wait for five seconds until the setting can be stored in the processor. 7. Fine tone adjustments can be made by turning the screw cap (see chapter ‘Fine Pitch Adjustment’). 8. After adjusting the desired pitch, unscrew the bottom cover and remove the battery. Then slide on the titanium housing, place the battery in the battery compartment and screw on the bottom cover tightly.
Fine Pitch Settings If the tone is too ‘unclear’, the screw cap must be screwed on more tightly. Please be careful not to turn the screw cap too far, as it could be damaged in the process. To achieve a pure tone at maximum volume, the screw cap can be loosened slightly.
Switching off the Device The device can be turned off by turning the bottom cover rotation to the left (e.g. to avoid unwanted sounds being emitted while carrying it).
Speech Melody The tone sequence is not set or activated ex-works. If desired, it can be set individually using the PC Transfer Set (contains an additional titanium housing, the data transfer cable and the software on a CD-ROM). It is recommended that the speech melody settings be integrated into speech therapy.
26
1. Unscrew the bottom cover and remove the battery.
2. Hold the device at the top and slide off the titanium housing.
3. Remove the cord protector and pass the closure of the carrying cord behind the slot perpendicular to the electronics.
4. Fix the cord using the cord protector (the u-end of the cord protector should point in the direction of the head of device) and slide on the titanium housing again. Important: The titanium housing should be easy to slide on. If this is difficult, or it gets stuck, then the cord protector needs to be turned. If no safety cord is used, then the cord protector is turned and inserted. It serves as a covering for the opening and prevents dirt from getting into the inner part of the housing. The cord protector will in this case be put into the top of the device with the sloped side. Here also, the titanium housing should be easy to slide on.
5. Place the battery back into the battery compartment and screw the bottom cover back on. 27
LA 2.40 Charger
This bag can be adjusted to fit various belt widths and is attached using the Velcro closure on the back side. A separate compartment allows for the convenient and safe storage of a replacement battery.
General Instructions n
Never use the charger in moist or wet areas!
n
Never place the device on a heater or in direct sunlight while it is being charged! The optimal performance of both the device and battery is achieved at temperatures from +10°C to +30°C (50°F – 86°F).
n
Batteries placed in the device gradually discharge themselves if the charger is not plugged into a power socket.
n
To operate the charger, attach the power cord to a power socket. Only after this the battery or the speech aid can be used. Attention: Make sure that the main voltage corresponds to the date on the identification plate!
n
To charge the SERVOX ® digital Speech Aid, simply place it in the LA 2.40 Charger and remove it when needed. A second battery can be charged at the same time and is therefore always ready for use. (Please make sure the polarity is correct ! )
n
The amount of charging time required depends on the remaining battery capacity and whether 1 or 2 batteries are being charged at the same time.
n
The replacement battery and SERVOX ® digital Speech Aid can always be kept in the charger, as the electronics of the device prevent overcharging.
Oral Connector with Adapter With the help of the oral connector with adapter, the SERVOX ®digital Speech Aid can be used directly after the laryngectomy and during periods of radiation treatment or when the throat is still too sensitive or swollen to use the speech aid alone. Attention: Read the separate in- struction sheet!
Soft-tone Screw cap The soft-tone screw cap provides a softer tone compared to the standard cap. The colour of the hard membrane of this screw cap is lighter than that of the standard screw cap, for better differentiation between the two.
