CLEANING AND LAMP REPLACEMENT CLEANING RECOMMENDATIONS All external surfaces of the StrabismoScope can be cleaned by using a damp alcohol wipe. To clean the glass, use either an alcohol wipe, or a glass cleaner such as Windex. Do not use abrasive materials on the glass surfaces. CAUTION: The StrabismoScope cannot be sterilized by gas or steam autoclave, or by soaking in disinfecting solutions. To insure proper operation, all service (with the exception of lamp replacement and cleaning) should be performed by Welch Allyn. LAMP REPLACEMENT Be sure lamp is cool before removing. If the instrument has been in use, it should sit for five minutes before changing the lamp.

To change the lamp, remove the StrabismoScope from its power source. Remove the lamp from the base of the instrument by prying out with fingernail, nail file, or other instrument.
Taking care not to touch the glass surface, replace lamp by inserting lamp into base of instrument so that the lamp “key” drops into either slot. (Push lamp in until firmly sealed.) Replacement lamp is a Welch Allyn No. 03000 Halogen Lamp. For Guaranteed Performance Use Only Genuine Welch Allyn Lamps. 4

Confirming Phoria If Diagnosed (or Suspected): 1. Cover one eye with the StrabismoScope turned on. Watch for the covered eye to move. 2. Remove the StrabismoScope. Watch for the eye to return to its initial position. Repeat over the other eye.
IV.
Confirming Tropia If Diagnosed (or Suspected): 1. Cover the dominant eye with the StrabismoScope turned on. Both eyes should move. 2. Remove the StrabismoScope. a. Eyes will return to original position (if dominant eye was covered) b. Eyes will remain in the same position (if alternate strabismus is present)
HELPFUL HINTS 1. Be aware of small or “flick” movements of the eye. Small amounts of strabismus are sometimes difficult to see, but these too, often lead to amblyopia. Movements can being either a horizontal or vertical direction. 2. Children’s attention spans tend to be brief. Vary the toys and targets that are used. 3. If possible, perform this test with the patient focusing at both near and distant targets. This easy to understand guide is available as a laminated wall poster and is free with your purchase of the StrabismoScope. To receive the poster, return the enclosed coupon.
