***************REVISED INSTRUCTION*************** Model #0600 PETER PICC LINE PETER PICC LINE is an anatomically correct teaching model, which permits the practice of placing Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters (PICC Lines). The PICC Line can be placed in the Basilic Vein, Cephalic Vein or the Median Antecubital Vein of the model. The procedures used in placing a PICC Line in a patient can be duplicated on the model: •
Site selection.
•
Measurement of proper catheter length.
•
Site cleansing.
•
Insertion of PICC Line.
•
Advancement of PICC Line.
•
Confirmation of proper catheter placement.
•
Catheter Securing/Dressing.
•
Catheter maintenance procedures.
FEATURES OF PETER PICC LINE •
Anatomically correct Cephalic Vein, Basilic Vein, Median Antecubital Vein, Jugular Vein, Subclavian Vein and the Superior Vena Cava with attached viewing window.
•
Palpable Clavicle, Ribs and Intercostal Spaces, enabling the practice of measuring proper catheter length.
•
Moveable chin simulates the occlusion of the Jugular Vein to prevent the PICC Line from entering this vein.
•
Translucent arm skin allows visualization of the Cephalic Vein, Basilic Vein and the Median Antecubital Vein.
•
Easily replaceable translucent arm skin and underlying veins.
•
Lightweight and portable.
•
Carrying case with pouch for supplies.
PARTS LIST •
One Carrying case with pouch for supplies.

•
Two arm vein tubing sets. (One is a replacement set)
•
One body vein set with attached viewing vial.
•
One set of ribs.
•
One muscle tissue.
•
One body skin.
•
Two arm skins. (One is a replacement set)
•

General Instructions for Use PETER PICC LINE will need to be primed with fluid prior to using the model. The supplied fluid bag with attached tubing is utilized for this procedure. The following steps will result in proper priming and air removal from the veins. •
Add 400cc of distilled water and 100cc of alcohol to the fluid bag. Be sure the roller clamp is closed.
•
Place model in an upright position.
•
Remove the cap on the arm vein tubing which exits at the end of the arm.
•
Attach the fluid bag tubing set to the arm vein.
•
Elevate the fluid bag approximately 12 inches above the model.
•
Open the snap clamp and remove the cap on the short piece of clear tubing at the top of the neck, then slowly open the roller clamp allowing fluid to flow. As the fluid flows into the model, it will first fill the arm veins and then spill over to fill the viewing vial. Air will be vented via the clear tubing at the top of the neck.
•
When fluid starts to flow up the clear tubing at the neck, close the snap clamp and attach the cap.
•
Return PETER PICC LINE to a horizontal position on its back.
•
Hang the fluid bag approximately 12 inches above the model.
•
CAUTION: Due to large size of needles used in placing PICC Lines, do not hang the fluid bag higher the 12 inches as it will elevate the pressure in the veins, resulting in increased leakage from the veins.
•
PETER PICC LINE is now ready to practice placing PICC Lines.
*** Due to the softness of some catheters, it is best to leave the introducer in place while advancing the PICC Line in "PETER PICC LINE". This may require you
to move your insertion site "up" the arm, to have sufficient catheter length to reach the viewing window. After use, drain the system by closing the roller clamp, removing the fluid bag tubing attached to vein arm tubing, open the cap on the view vial and empty into the sink. MOVEABLE CHIN - OCCLUSION OF THE JUGULAR VEIN The neck of the model is designed to be turned to the right side (arm side). This is done by holding the chin and turning it to the right. The chin will need to be held until the catheter tip has passed the opening for the Jugular Vein. This will occlude the Jugular Vein and prevent the catheter from going into it. If the neck is not turned, the catheter will go up the Jugular Vein about 50% of the time. TROUBLE SHOOTING Air in veins after priming with fluid. •
Model was not upright when primed.
•
Fluid was allowed to fill veins too quickly and trapped air.
•
Loose connection - check `O' rings on vein tubing.
Unable to prime veins with fluid •
Clear tubing at top of neck has a closed snap clamp or attached cap.
•
Veins have become kinked. Remove arm skin and correct.
•
Fluid bag tubing pinched shut by the constant pressure of the snap clamp or roller clamp. Manipulate the tubing with fingers at pinch site to restore tubing lumen. Move clamps to a new position every now and then to minimize.
Catheter tip does not appear in viewing window. •
Neck was not turned and held in place, catheter in the Jugular Vein.
•
Some PICC Lines need to be placed higher up on the arm to reach the Superior Vena Cava viewing window, due to their length.
Translucent Arm Skin does not fit properly. •
Check to make sure the hole for the vein tubing in the arm skin and the vein tubing match-up.
•
Leaking of the vein tubing.
•
Loose vein tubing connection - check tubing `O' rings.
•
Although the veins are made of a material that is self-sealing, the large size of the needles used in placing PICC Lines will cause some leaking. By moving the insertion site and not using burred needles, this leakage will be kept to a minimum. The
arm vein tubing and the arm skin will need to be replaced periodically. Skin and Vein Kits are available through VATA (see REPLACEMENT PARTS) CARE OF PETER PICC LINE •
Use the recommended fluid for priming the model. Using a synthetic blood will make it difficult to see the catheter tip in the Superior Vena Cava viewing window. The alcohol prevents mold growth in any residual fluid left in the tubing after draining.
•
Drain fluid between use.
•
Do not clean the model with solvents or corrosives. Wash with Ivory liquid soap and warm water.
•
Printed matter can permanently stain the model if prolonged contact occurs.
•
Store model in case when not in use.
